I find episode 1 super boring with unattractive obvious fan-service scenes thrown at your face. I am getting Log Horizon vibes from this where there is more talk and political BS than some realistic RPG combat. Judging from the people's reaction here episode 12 ain't gonna do any justice to this story if it will keep going at this pace. It will barely have any development by the end, unless it skips some of the plot material from LN which then again will lead to it's downfall.

-SIGH...WHY SHITS LIKE THESE ARE GETTING ANIME ADAPTION. WHY NOT Mushoku Tensei? MT will clearly and easily dominate any other RPG based fantasy story and MT has way better characters and character's development

That Ranta douchebag was probably the most annoying character I've seen in an anime in probably like 5 years. Can that fucker please get killed off?

It's beginning its quite different from the LN... they skipped somethings(not that meanifull though)... it's get better... it has the "rpg" felling in a way...but the fights are more close to danmachi then log horizon though )... it has team work battles but not on log horizon level... I'm in volume 3 and I've been liking for now...(and I'm pretty sure that it will not be as violent as the novel, they always do the anime adaptation less violent than the novel, such a sad thing)

it felt so slow and tranquil yet for some reason I'm so hyped for the next episode.

Maybe because the show seems to be drenched in a tragedy cocktail.
I have no idea why but i can just feel it in my bones that people are going to die when they are killed in this show.

Agreed, setting the focus of their first small-talk on boobs sets a bad tone for the rest of the show. Would have been better to have this conversation after we got to know the characters better. Now that red-haired guy just immediately comes off as a douchebag.

Yea that's the first thing he says iirc, I know why they included it but it's just bad placement for setting up the characters.
D3pthCharge said:

Maybe so, but this type of character interaction is a concurrent problem in the source. Literally every conversation that is centered around Ranta and Yume is completely one-note.

But it's more forgivable in the source since we had Ranta and Haruhiro go at it multiple times before he really goes off on Yume. Plus Manato and Mogzo barely did anything, if next episodes shows their chemistry together then it's fine but other than world building A-1 dropped the ball on character set up.

I'm 100% sure if they 1:1 follow the LN people there will be even more people say it's boring, since there will be no any action in first episode.
=================

BTW CAN SOME OF YOU PEOPLE STOP KEEP SAYING "A-1 THIS A-1 THAT"? EVERY FREAKING SHOW SHOULD AND ALWAYS DEPENDS ON MAIN STAFF NOT STUDIO.

But i guess that's what happen when people keep misleading this is "trapped in MMO series" while is not, SAO kids just come here and making lame complain.

Now this anime seems promising. Lots of potential right there. Now that I think about it, I thought the same when watching the 1st episode of SAO as well!
So far, characters seem great, I like Shihoru already. Screw Ranta and his stupid anime design! He looks like a side character at most! I believe he looks better in LN? Not sure..

The 1st episode could be better, but I can see it can get better from here?
Let's hope it's not be like SAO, and whether it can be better than Log Horizon and Danmachi or not. --No wait! A1 animated this?! There goes all of my hope and dreams!

Well, the art and OST are nice. It's also pretty refreshing to see that they don't all just start out being good at what they're doing.
Unfortunately, those were the only good points. I'm fine with a little fanservice but ngl the boob conversation was boring and strange and Barbara's outfit is extremely... ineffective. What kind of thief would want their boobs to be out and bouncing around? Ever heard of a sports bra? sigh @ anime logic. But I guess it's to be expected and I'll live
The characters seem pretty bland thus far, and MC's voice sounds wayyy too mature. Wish they'd switch voice of MC with the leader of the group, that would fit better, I think.
Nevertheless, I will hold on for at least 3 episodes. Hopefully it can find its way into darker territory or something to hold it up.

That was a response to someone earlier post about why a video game setting and not some fantasy setting. If you think about it further the fantasy and video game realms have actually become one in the same.

There are a bunch of "stuck in a fantasy world" shows too, No Game No Life being one of the better recent ones, and lots where they aren't stuck like the currently running GATE.

As for this show, what a mess. Lots of obvious filler, "I like salt!", "being able to tell boobies is an ability!" Lots of fan service. Lots of really stupid dialogue "I'm fat the skimpy cloths I wear just hide it!"

I'm sure it'll be a hit. Complete and total crapfests like Six Braves and Chick In A Dungeon did well thanks entirely to having boobstrap fanservice, which this has. If those shows can succeed while spending 90% of their time throwing random garbage on the screen that has nothing to do with the story with the occasional flash of boobies, this show should do fine.

You right there are exceptions but you didn't give a good example using No Game No Life. The better examples of these would be Guin Saga, 12 koki (12 Kingdoms), Slayers and Maze. Though the last 3 mentioned do have RPG elements in them.

Here is the breakdown: (Spoilers may be included.): (Guin Saga) Guin, the main protagonist has amnesia and is a reluctant hero in a foreign world. (12 koki) Youko is a brought into a new world after being selected as the Empress of Kei. (Slayers) Lina Inverse and Co. are mercenaries for hire in a medieval world setting. (Maze) Two siblings are brought into a strange world where myths and legends become a reality and they have suppressed memories of how and why they were brought there.

NOTE: Maze is the only one of those that features MECHA theme. It also worth noting that Maze (1997) mecha designs came to influence another Mecha anime called Rahxephon (2002) a few years later.

Going off of next week's preview, looks like someone is gonna die. My guess is that it's either Manato or Yume. Manato because he doesn't seem like the leader type and as a priest, if his party can't kill anything, he's at the most risk if he were to be caught out away from the group. Could be Yume also because she sucks with a bow and if something comes at her and she misses, she's toast.

Solid first episode. People complaining about similarities to other anime or the amount of fanservice are ridiculous. Nowadays everything is similar to something, one way or another. And this anime hasn't much fanservice. There were 2 or 3 scenes with mild fanservice. But it seems even that is to much for some people.

This show had promise with it's unique art style and potentially interesting plot on a tired and cliche genre but after this first episode you can get all you need to know on why it will fail at ultimately being anything greater than it's counterparts. The biggest issue I had with this first episode was of course it's fan service, it was not done so lazily and awkwardly from the rest of the tone that it made me cringe and facepalm at just how sad it was. The whole thief scene and their horribly written eating scene that ends this dull episode. It was such a pathetic attempt at drawing the lowest common denominator in after what had been an incredibly underwhelming episode. They knew their art wouldn't be enough so hey throw in some cleavage, awkward scenarios adressing their cleavage and really unsubtle scenes and angles of girls showing their cleavage! HOW ORIGINAL!

My second complaint and probably the worst part is the story and characters are just so incredibly bland. Nobody has an interesting or unique personality. But worse than that, their reactions to having no memories is incredibly unbelievable. So we're stuck with children who are even too poorly written to care that they're in a place they don't know with people they don't know and the episode treats it like this fun loving casual picnic, when it should be potentially life or death. The one scene we get of actual back story is really cliche and goofy, this overly flamboyant character forces generic RPG rules down some kids throats without anyone questioning it or thinking about it in a realistic way(even though we know that they exist in a modern world with cellphones). Hell they don' t even seem puzzled, they have no memories after all yet treat everything so calmly. Once you realize this show has no idea how to create tension or setup a good mystery you think, "Well what's left to care about?" and that answer is, NOTHING! The show assumes the fan service, cheap and lazy references to RPG like scenarios and pretty artwork will be enough but it's not, it's a cheap distraction from how paper thin every other important aspect a show like this needs to be good.

Lastly I'd just like to say the writing is just, so boring. No idea if this is a light novel adaptation or something but everything feels so unnatural. The characters are as dim as they come and I can only imagine that is due to an incompetent screen writer and director or at the very least a badly written source material in which they had to adapt with mediocre writers of their own. The characters say nothing of substance, it's all bland boring, mindless dialogue in a scenario in which you could be exploring massive amounts of tension, fear and potentially deep philosophical questions. These are modern day people awoken in a world completely different from their own with no idea how they got their, yet none of that is addressed. My final note about the writing and to me is the cherry on top is how these kids who are not video game characters are so mindless and unnatural that they go off to kill smart sentient goblins who by all accounts seem relatively peaceful and even pretty cute. We see them at they end all hanging around a fire just relaxing and talking. Yet we are supposed to be as stupid and mindless as these kids who are going out to kill these creatures as if they're picking apples from a tree. No acknowledgement of the moral questions that come with killing these obviously intelligent peaceful beings for money at all. So I can only assume this show is made for children or an adult audience base that is absolutely incapable of any sort of critical thinking. But then if it's for kids, why the awkward man child like fan service and lack of action? The show is catering towards man children who like pathetic fan service and pretty colors and don't want to think. Just turn on some mediocre anime and get a little chub popping in their sweat pants and relax. What a disappointing show and a massive waste of great artists.

For many of the reasons you outlined I was only half paying attention to this show, whose characters are indeed stupid and whose actions are ridiculous (although nowhere near as bad as Chicks In A Dungeon), but they did say something along the lines of "they don't have enough people to hold them back, which is why they need volunteers like us." From that one would presume the goblins are eating people's babies like all good goblins should.

That's a really good challenge, why do the "kids" try to off a goblin as soon as they arrive in this strange new world? They seem to have very little memory in the first place and yet it's never explained why, because this all happens before they arrive in the main town of Grimgar.

(May contain Spoilers) In Danmachi, the main character Bell Cranel is native to this RPG world, where they hunt in dungeons for materials and treasures, never world building as to why and how this world was established. It's a similar conundrum.

In SAO, the objective is obvious, these kids were forced by a ingenious and demented scientist into a social experiment to pass 100 levels of a dungeon with massively overpowered monster bosses to test the human capacity against greater odds. SAO passes the test.

In Log Horizon, after a expansion to Elder Scrolls MMORPG game, they are mysteriously brought into a world that only resembles the game they were playing before. They cannot leave, they have no social order or such construct, they react to this world as if it were the same game world they knew before. LH passes the test.

In Overlord, the main protagonist Momonga discovers that the MMORPG world of Yggdrasil, which he has been a fan of for many playing years is closing down their servers, decides to stay online and see it with this own eyes. After the countdown, he is mysteriously transported to Yggdrasil, but discovers that NPCs have come to be sentient beings. <---> Part of the problem with Overlord was I don't recall him looking for logout option once, maybe I missed it... (Also having never having read the source material.). Still Overlord passes the test. (Because Momonga is familiar with this surroundings and is taking actions according to familiar rules of the game, that still exist in this world.).

That's my conclusion, 3 out of 5 anime presented have passed the test of motivation and reason.

But lets give Grimgar the benefit of the doubt, since (1) I haven't read the source material. (2) It's only just beginning.

Momonga does try to log out and finds that he can't. While he can use some of the interactive menus that he used in the game, many don't work any longer, including Log Out. Momonga and the audience don't know why, but he is aware that this has happened.

Why should they join what appears to be a protection racket/mercenary gang? Why don't they check things out a bit to find out what their options really are before committing to becoming "adventurers"? Why should they, or the audience believe the gang leader saying that their only option is to learn to be killers and that there isn't any "menial" work for them to do?

This is supposedly a "world" and not an RPG. This world has various items available, including the weapons, clothes and food that the characters buy from Someone. Someone has to grow or make those items, unless this is just an RPG where they appear because of code. World societies ALWAYS have menial jobs available. If there aren't any menial jobs available, then this is an RPG and not a "world".

This is what pissed me off so badly with the set-up premise of this show - my suspension of disbelief just took off and couldn't return.

The watercolour scenery is very nice! However, overall, I can't say I'm super interested yet. Zaki's character (Manato) is my favourite so far! He gives off this motherly/waifu-like feeling xD Also, Ranta (voiced by Yoshino Hiroyuki) is kinda growing on me.

The whole boobs/fat scene was so unnecessary and too long. Oh well.

Looking forward to next week!

Thanks for the confirmation, I must have been effected by Albedo memory wiping HOGANS! xD

After rewatching the episode, here are my thoughts:

1) We presume they have been at this world for a few weeks, enough time to learn about the shops, currency and how to get currency.

2) The guild system is unnecessary, unless the shops don't want goods for coins?

3) 5 min Boob talk and 5 min leering at the FAT MOOSE GIRL in weird Ikkitousen poses (YES Ikkitousen, go look it up!)

4) Renji was probably the ideal MC, instead they chose a NOOB.

5) A water color background is only permissible to a great anime like Samurai Champloo (YES I went there!)

6) You can always set traps and ambushes for a group of goblins, whose stupid enough to try to get only one. (Team Rocket vs Pikachu comes to mind.)

7) What's with conformity of the group. ONLY Renji had the brass balls to stand up to that freak show GM. If that was me, I'd kick him in the nutsac and walk out. (Just thought of a devilish idea... unleash Rory Mercury on that freak show -- she is God after all!!)

8) This was bland and superficial, it doesn't have any substantial elements to compare to SAO, Log Horizon, Overlord and Danmachi.

9) They never focus on a particular task, it's like Gilligans Island only worse, they skip through with remote control and you're wondering what was happening there?

10) I came here looking for RPG Fantasy anime and what I got instead was Doraemon in Fantasy Island!

DONE!

Checking out other options and not committing to the offer the gay guy proposed would have left that individual without coin to survive. Unless you're already experienced at surviving In the wild, you have nothing to trade for and therefore you're relying on pure kindness to get you through the day.

Naturally, said person could refuse and tag along with the losers In this episode however that would just mean they weren't contributing to the whole by accepting the coin the gay guy gave, leaving them with less coin to survive.

Bri says an interesting line while doing his exposition talk. "Don't think there are other types of menial labours to do." This could imply several things, including that those In charge of the organization are deliberately preventing the people they find In the tower from acquiring jobs outside of what they offer them.

Basically, a low-key threat. I'm not interested In discussing anything outside of this episode and I have already voiced concerns In this thread previously, so don't think I'm defending it due to undying faith.

I don't know if you've been reading the responses. I think you should be In the boku dake ga inai machi thread.

Also, link to post predicting this?

Dude the only thing boring was reading all your rant... Did you have your expectations that high even though it's only the first episode? It seems you expected so much that you couldn't even understand one tenth of the episode.
"No acknowledgement of the moral questions that come with killing these obviously intelligent peaceful beings for money at all" do you even know what's an RPGMMO? Hell you didn't even need to, cause the pink guy clearly told them all, if they didn't fought monsters they would die if they didn't do shit they would die. And they work for the borders of Grimar or something, if monsters invade they have to be killed...
Do you even know how amnesia works? If you wake up with no memories, you would probably believe the first thing some guy would tell to you cause you wouldn't have basis to contradict that and still the big guy was suspicious cause that probably was part of the "unique personality" that you said none of them had after only having watching 20 minutes off the first episode.
Why so much hate, most of what you said doesn't make sense, only the fan service part.

Pretty slow start.

Hopefully things gets interesting from here..besides the subtle fanservice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

Also, wtf!? A whole team couldn't beat one measly goblin. That's kinda pathetic if you ask me, but oh well.

This is something different, very good art and animation with nice music as well, relaxing pace and characters are developing slowly but surely.
Not bad at all, world building is good too.
Pace is too slow for 1 cour but I don't give a fuck as I'm enjoying it lel

Realistic and pretty decent, but the dark elements of this anime is yet to come ... so 3/5 for this episode ...

Can't say that I'm impressed by the first episode.
Hope that changes down the way since I tend to like these kind of animes (overlord, log horizon etc..)

The most stupid part of this thread is people complain this show's fan service but at the same time they never pay attention the dialogue of this show.

DONE!

1.Yes, by killing goblins and loot their things to sell, or what? you think they can be merchant easily?
2.Without guild they can do nothing.
3.So this is the only part you pay attention.
4.So you just want Gary Stu show.
5.Go ask Ryousuke Nakamura why he choose the style he always use then.
6.Where the hell they have money to buy traps? even their basic gear need money to buy.
7.Who the hell told you bri is GM(hell why would you even use the word "GM", this is not MMO series)? and did you even pay attention what he said?
8.Because you don't pay attention.
9.Their particular task is survive in this world.
10.None of any things you said are right, including this one.

Nice balance of male and female characters and the premise is pretty interesting. I'm hoping for drama and lots of bloodshed later on.

As for the creators skipping many points in the light novel, there's a possibility they'll feature it later on when they show how they struggled in their earlier stages. This introductory episode may have been fashioned in a way to attract more viewers.

Still Shihoru is so cute. She's my waifu in this series for now.

I'm expecting some bloody deaths within this group.

Nice introductory episode, A-1 with the nice visuals, I really do hope they keep on providing this kind of visuals with consistency on the ff episodes, that boob talk was a waste of time though.
