But anyway, on topic. He has my respect for his industry-making recording techniques. Modern music would be vastly different were it not for him. Not to mention the impact he had on guitar. I also thought his guitar playing was wonderful. It had a 'Django Reinhardt' feel to it, and the fact that he played well into his 90's despite arthritis? Well, I think that speaks for his skill quite sufficiently. He left quite the legacy.

Man it's so weird how I remember hearing this guy's name here and there and yet don't even know much of him. I'm not a musician or anything and I never really layed hands on an electric guitar, but still... wow! It's so just... weird how I didn't even realize what kind of legacy he gave.

What's amazing is that his legacy is even in anime! *laughes* I'm not kidding either. I just checked for one of the famous electric guitars he built, the Gibson Les Paul, and that guitar is actually the very guitar Yui uses in K-ON! So weird how Yui thought that a legendary electric guitar was considered cute.

I'm suprised no one... actually ya know what, I'm not that suprised that no one in this thread had pointed out the reference yet. Everyone was falling for so much of the "moe" content of that show, that I don't think anyone had cared part of the show was about music and references to music.

Do a bit of reading about him. You'll be quite surprised at how much he really affected the music industry.

I have been just now. The only problem I'm not aspiring to be a musician, I'm aspiring to be an animator, and other than playing the djembe, I don't know virtually anything about the music industry or the famous people within it. And whenever I try to research the industry, there's so much history and termonology that I don't even know where to begin.

I bet about 80% of this people in this thread just learned who he was today too. Oh well, he certainly wasn't my favorite blues guitarist, but he certainly has my respect.
All the mods fucking blow on this website except Kaiserpingvin, Cloudy-Sky, Baman and aero. PM me if you're actually good and I left you out.

Yes, aside from perhaps the stratocaster or telecaster, I would say that the Les Paul is the most instantly recognisable guitar.

I'm not sure if this is true, as I'm merely reciting this from memory, but I remember reading something about Les Paul actually hating the Les Paul.

EDIT: Oh, and Gibson is vastly inferior to Fender.

I do remember hearing that he wanted it to be a 'blues guitar' rather than a 'rock guitar'. Whether this caused him to dislike it I cannot say. That would be quite an interesting fact if it were true.

I have just done a little research. I can't find a quote saying he hated the design directly, but apparently many of the changes he wanted made to the original design were rejected. He may have been unhappy with this I suppose.

Here, I think I found something. According to wikipedia, in 1960 Gibson came out with a new Les Paul. Les Paul saw the new Les Paul and said he didn't like it, and he requested that his name be removed. Gibson complied, and opted to rename it the Gibson SG (SG being an acronym for Solid Guitar).

My cheap one was $400 AUD. with amp and such.
My good guitar costed $1500AUD, though I got it for only $900 as it was going out of production and they wanted to bring in new models, the schecter s-1 elite or something.
I don't think it's worth the $1500 price tag, but for $900 it's an AWESOME guitar.

Anywhere from $100 to $5,000. And upwards from there, but most people don't go higher than 5 G unless they're loaded.

You start with a cheap one! I started with a very cheap Spanish guitar that set me back about £30.

Although is you only want an electric, there are plenty of good deals for guitars with amps, tuners and instructional material thrown in.

Why do you dream of having that one? Is it really that... actually ya know what, this would be the part where I might get confused by all the instrument terminology. Besides I think I'm getting a little bit off topic from this forum, so I'll talk about guitars another time.

Ugh, word of advice hypeathon, never start with an electric. I started with an electric and it's haunted me. $100 squire stratocaster copy. Piece of shit. I haven't played it for a month or two because one of the machine heads broke, and I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. Plus it seems like a decent deal, but when you throw in amps, wires, etc. you're in $350. And then you find out you don't even like playing the guitar! My advice would be to get a decent ~$200 acoustic, and go from there. I recommend the Mitchell MD100-S. Only puts you back 175, and she's a fucking beaut. Looks real sexy, sounds better than some higher end guitars, and can stand some wear and tear. It's an amazing guitar for the price.

Ibanez acoustics are also a good starting point.
Even if you dislike the brand, the low model acoustics are damn cheap and yet built surprisingly well.

I would also suggest not starting with an electric, but to be honest, I know plenty of guitarists who went straight in for an electric, including a close friend of mine who is probably the best non-professional guitarist I know. Either way, just make sure not to spend a fortune, because as Bubbler says, you might not decide to keep it up.

But anyway, we seem to be going quite off topic now. I'm sure any guitarists in the thread would be happy to help you with any questions via a comment or pm.

Either way, just make sure not to spend a fortune, because as Bubbler says, you might not decide to keep it up.

I'm not saying that starting with an electric will make you a worse musician, i'm just saying that you're far more likely to get boned. Everyone teenage boy wants to be AN ELEKTRIK GUITARIST TO IMPRESS CHIXX AND SHRED AND MELT FACES, and their parents don't want to spend 1k on a decent guitar, so they churn out poorly made chinese pieces of shit for 100 bucks a pop. Whereas acoustic guitars are going to be a tiny bit more expensive, but are going to be a much better deal in the long run, because they're so much more durable and clean sounding.
We can't stop here! This is bat country!

Anywhere from $100 to $5,000. And upwards from there, but most people don't go higher than 5 G unless they're loaded.

..... Woah! I don't even spend that much money when I go to the art store.

You start with a cheap one! I started with a very cheap Spanish guitar that set me back about £30.

Although is you only want an electric, there are plenty of good deals for guitars with amps, tuners and instructional material thrown in.

Not that yours or or OranSolus's advices aren't very soundful, but I'm not sure if I actually wanna buy a guitar yet. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate guitars or anything, it's that I'm just grasping all this information about music instruments.

God, this conversation has turned ignorant fast. I'd say about 90% of guitarists are assholes. I can't get along with ANYBODY that also plays the guitar. Everybody just wants to show how god damn good they are, and forget that music is all about technical ability, it's also about putting soul into your music. Les Paul put soul into his music, and also made many technical achievements on the guitar. Soul is what separates noise from music in my opinion. Of course, being technically proficient makes it easier for you to express your soul with an instrument, but as far as I'm concerned if all you do is play other people's stuff and never bother to learn any scales or theory you aren't a musician.

Also, being a guitarist myself, I actually consider guitarists as a whole to be the lowest class of musicians, only seeking attention and money.

Of course, if you play for the right reasons, as few people do anymore, and you have a little bit of luck, money and fame will come to you naturally.

TL;DR: Guitarists as a whole are jackasses.

Now...

Unfortunately sickky is very right =|

I'm not concerned with fame or money, though (as earlier mentioned i don't play infront of people) but I am quite often an asshole with regards to guitar.

Anyway, sorry for more off topic-ness.

One of the most ironic juxtapositions I've ever seen.
All the mods fucking blow on this website except Kaiserpingvin, Cloudy-Sky, Baman and aero. PM me if you're actually good and I left you out.

Oh, rule 8...
