So I'm a black female living in the south and have just gotten introduced to anime. It's extremely hard trying to find people who are well versed in this new world and I need new shows to watch. If you're down to help a sistah out continue reading to see if you know any anime that fit into the description.

I have watched maybe 5 anime which inlcude:
Blood +
Vampire Knight
Samurai Champloon
Elfen Lied
Claymore

Out of all of these I enjoyed specific things about them but am craving a little more. I want an actual good story line. I want to WANT to watch each episode and not dread it because it's the same thing over and over again. I also want there to be a female lead but she can't be super weak. We all know how boring a weak female character is. I want some kind of romance. Almost like AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER in the sense that it is not the main topic of the story but what aids in making the story so interesting. I want there to be action and decent artwork. The biggest thing I'm looking for is depth, no more 'shoujo' anime more so 'josei'. To be completely honest I looked this up on wikipedia and I'm sorry if I didn't get that right. Just let me know if you can help and give me some recommendations. It doesn't have to fit all the criteria because I'm really pressed for some good anime.

Thanks in Advance,
Lauren M.

you could try fate series (fate zero + fate stay night unlimited blade works ) but first season has no romance. All other points are there, all female characters are usefull and there are some, good story, good characters, 1 of the best animatated animes so the action scenes look awesome +its serious
story: 7 mages summon 7 sevants for a holy grail war to fight in a tag team death battle till 1 team remains. everyone uses different tactics ^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9erufX1zeY (fate zero amv/ 1st season/ i hope you dont mind to have a pretty long prologue. the first action scenes start at ep 4, since they try to introduce all characters carefully so you care for them)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iey2jcDtZS0 (fate stay night unlimited blade works tv/ thats the 2nd season, it doenst have such a long intro like the first 1 and its 10 years after. you can also watch this 1 first if you rly like, since each 1 spoilers a bit of the other ones story, but fate zero has a better story in my opinion)

psycho pass (not useless female mc/ she grows soo much through this series/ just hints for romance, futuristic anime about police, thriller like, also nice world build=)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HBWWotRmYc (1st opening)

mirai nikki (story is not that special, but fine. it has an extreme strong female lead + much romance and very bloody action. its pretty famous since the female is the most famous yandare)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7VqSWZjzd0 )opening)
My favorite quotes from animes:

who try to make miracles happen. - Ef a tale of melodies.
I destroy worlds. I create worlds. - Code geass

I'd recommend:

Beast Player Erin - There's no romance subplot though I'm afraid, but it matches your other criteria with a great female protagonist, action and a very interesting, in-depth storyline.

Seirei no Moribito - Not sure if there's any romance in this one, but I've heard good things about it. Same writer as Erin.

Princess Mononoke - A bit of romance, but it doesn't go into depth. Movie.

Chihayafuru - A bit more romance in this one, might not be what you're looking for since the plot revolves around a card game.

Definitely the Fate series as already suggested above.

I'd also recommend Terror in Toyko, there's no (strong) female lead, there's some romance but not too much. Imo it has a pretty good storyline though and I couldn't stop watching.

Death Note is another anime that you just can't stop watching.

Shingeki no Kyojin aka Attack On Titan, great art, good plot imo, strong but reserved female lead.

Also another tip, just go through people's anime lists and randomly pick anime that sound interesting to you.

Since your so new to anime, and haven't watched much. I'd reccomend just watching most/all anime on the popular anime list. Most people will reccomend them to you anyway since their good.

http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?type=bypopularity

Altough there is quite a few hidden gems not high up on the popular list, most of the really good/memorable anime are. ^^

You seem to be a little overloaded with suggestions. Although most of these suggestions are great, I would recommend the show

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. Objectively, it is the best anime that was ever created. It is similar in some respects to what you have previously watched.

Second Seirei no Moribito, though the romance is quite secondary.

Princess Mononoke is a great movie with some interesting major female characters, but the main character is a dude. If you like it though, watch Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, which is perhaps not as good (though the comic is amazing) but has similar themes and a strong female lead. Not all of Miyazaki's movies star women but his female characters are usually very good.

Revolutionary Girl Utena and Rose of Versailles are both fantastic, full of sword fighting, determined and physically strong female main characters, some romance... they are a bit older though, so if you prefer the more recent art styles that might turn you off of them and especially Rose of Versailles. Both have a lot of intrigue but Utena is kind of weird and symbolic, though the first few episodes don't show it that much.

I'm going to go ahead and vote for Fate Zero + Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works. It's got pretty much everything you're looking for.

The one that I'm going to vehemently disagree with is Ergo Proxy (sorry, FireEmblemIke24). It's slow, plodding, artwork starts out good and then just gets worse and worse, full of exposition, and is just a chore to watch in my frank opinion.

Rather than repost, read my suggestions in another thread from earlier today: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1434305&show=0#msg42450362. None of the shows I mention there have been recommended so far.

The request in that thread is similar to yours, too.

Of those suggested above, I'd endorse SnugglyWuggly's list as well.

For an "over-the-top" option, try Kill la Kill.

Kill la Kill has quickly become one of my favorites, but I'm forced to wonder if it's good for a newcomer. A lot of the humor from that show comes from how it satirizes common anime tropes, so a newcomer might not be able to appreciate it as much.

I watched it with a friend who is a professional sculptor and had seen only a couple of Ghibli movies and not much else. It's now his favorite show. It's pretty easy to tell if it's something that has appeal after just a couple of episodes.

Not much romance, though, and a lot of skin.

I'm not saying it can't be enjoyable for a newcomer. What I am saying is that they're not going to be able to have a full appreciation for it.

Hey guys thank you so much for the recommendations! I completely forgot that I had already watched all of the Fate/Zero collection probably because I did so with my ex boyfriend and try to repulse those memories. I'm definitely gonna look through the popular anime list and research the ones you gave me!

You havent picked up One Piece yet? What are you waiting for mate? The Chimera Ant arc from Hunter x Hunter is like a diamond among diamonds so you absolutely have to watch it. Aside from these popular ones, if you can handle a bit of extreme gore and want to watch something sort check out Shigurui, easily the best samurai series out there.

These are my 3 favorite ones and are far better than any romance story could ever hope to get but they dont fit your description concerning that female lead part. Hellsing Ultimate is another extremely good show and it fits better your criteria, but story wise it doesnt compare to the others.
