Them and everybody else. I'm still waiting for Japan to set up the "Special Region Free State" and go King Leopold on the Empire, because that's what would really happen. That or they'd pull an America and just settle the Special Region and start drilling for oil without asking or caring what the people already living there think.

Outbreak Company was a more realistic portrayal of the likely attitude of any major world power (including Japan) towards a technologically less advanced "other world" that only they had access to.

You are not the only one. I am not really liking [Rory] as much as some people. I would like her if her character were much more fleshed out.

I also don't particularly care for her. As far as I can tell she only exists to provide fanservice and cringe-inducing jingoistic speeches.

Lelei is much better, she seems to be a naturally curious person and this makes me sympathize with her. I actually wish she were the main character of the story - the meeting of two different societies is the most interesting aspect of the show.

So far, that's exactly the case. But maybe later on we will be proven wrong & she might have a proper characterization. Or maybe I am being too optimistic.

I think Lelei, Pina, & Tuka are the better characters out of all of them. Pina with her complicated relationship with her own father/kingdom & Tuka's psychological problem are certainly their high points & could be explored further.

To be fair Rory's character is rather simple, and has been pretty much doing the same thing she's always done for 900+ years. Killing, and seducing men. Though I never understood the whole "souls pass through her body" thing. What, is there a portal to hell in between her legs or something?

Lelei is enjoyable to watch, as she learns more of the modern world. Elf just hasn't had much screen time or real assistance in the plot other than showing off her sleep magic one time...

I do hope Rory's rampage next episode is as satisfying as I hope it'll be

The manga hasn't really expounded about the soul passing through her body either.

From a religious standpoint however, she can be compared to Jesus Christ. Where in Chirstianity Jesus is a bridge between sinful men and God, in the anime Rory fulfulls a simillar role where she acts as a bridge between men killed in battle and Emloy. With that in mind you may also compare Rory to Valkyries in Norse mythology.

To be honest I liked Rory better in the manga tho, also didn't really expect her to have the voice she has now. Rather I expected her to have a childish with childish giggles as she kills instead of a mature ero voice.

Slowly leaning toward Lelei as best female character myself based on the anime.
My opinion of the Best female character based on the manga is still firmly planted on Rory.

This anime is so gross and stupid.

I should have dropped it when rory was having an orgasm a few episodes back but now we get Itami sleeping with the teal hair little girl....and now Rory trying to have sex with him

Can we just focus on the plot please and the actual mystery..Whatever happened to the damn war from the other world?

I don't know... is it just me or is the writing in this anime a bit bad? First episodes were decent, but now I get this feeling after every episode that this could have been so much more. The plot seems a bit chaotic. There's too many characters popping from out of nowhere and disappearing.

I like most, on the second thought, some of the characters a lot, especially those from the fantasy world. Leilei is tied with Papi as my waifu of the season. Rory is sexy, elf-chan is really pretty, even the ex-wife with her glasses on is pretty...

... but it's really about the plot. Something is missing. Some potential is wasted, on cliches, jokes repeated too many times...

Will still watch for Leilei though ;)
imo, this series is far better than most of the series that are airing right now. Seriously! It's on my top most watched in 2015! I like the concept of the story. It's similar to outbreak company (which i liked despite the lack of seriousness) the progression of the story is decent but you might be right. This series could've been better with a more serious tone to it, but this one focuses more on comedy. This anime is awesome in it's own way and i prefer it like that. Besides, charlotte and god eater is what caught my interest when it comes to dark themed anime.

Probably they were courteously denied access, just because one asks nicely does not mean nations will do as you say, even if you are allies (case in point, japan has asked for decades to the US to return some islands to japan, but no dice).

Also remember this operation was assembled in a jiffy since Piña and co. visiting japan was decided one day before the trip. Logistics and bureaucracy can be your worst enemies. Using blackmail has obviously a desperate move.

Again, armor plating for regular army grunts does not equal the greatest possible find in the world as far as tactical resources goes. WTF! The PRESIDENT BLACKMAILED THEIR BEST ASIAN ALLY! A country where they have 20+ military installations. Does it not make sense to you the whole concept is stupid by now? That even if they were going to blow it UP for access to other world guests, or a gate, that they'd not go in fully prepared?

Again, rationalizing silly plot story to try and make it sound plausible. the whole story doesn't pass the sniff test, which brings me to...

I.E. It's nationalist propaganda BS, but it's amusing and fun to watch so you overlook it. The whole "Rambo 2" point went right over your head cause you actually rationalize the scenarios for more than they're worth. which are silly scenarios to make the "good guys" strong, resourceful, and virtuous and the foreign baddies seem weak, foolish, and incompetent.

people have different taste. you belittling other people taste is not contributing yo the discussion.

for me the anime you mentioned is worse than GATE. I really don't get rokka and really annoyed by the over sexy clothes that looks so unreal and not practical for battle., world trigger... I have no comment for it. but arslan senki have really bad animation and the talking scenes is not well presented.

Charlotte is a mixed bag. some ep are nice while other are bad. the animation is generally good but the pacing and presentation is not good. but these last few episode it really get better and better.

to be fair, gate is also not perfect but overall its more enjoyable for my taste. the clothing is not simply ridiculous, it have their own reason sand function. the presentation is superb for action and talking scenes. although the animation sometime got too lazy butbitbnever deviate too much from the generally well animated scenes.

From what I can tell, the taste is young looking girls ;) But I digress.

The thing of Gate is it has no plot and has basically turned into a comedy...the plot I THOUGHT we were going to get in the early episodes has basically turned into a completely different anime.

1. Rokka

Actually appears to have a plot and mystery and the sexy clothes are noticeable but they aren't distracting to the actual plot nor do they seem to really play it up as much because wait for it....the writing is good.

Flash over to Gate...you get fan service galore due to bad writing.

2. World Trigger---

Actually has a plot and follows it and can adequately use comedy.

3. Arslan-

Once again has a plot and nearly ALL the characters are fleshed out and not just there to serve a purpose.....the Woman with the arrow walks around in basically lingerie but she can actually fight and is useful to the plot...ROry, can fight but is basically a God so she always wins basically and there as a sex symbol.

4. Charlotte-
Even their stupidest episodes somehow seem to advance the plot because wait for it...there is an actual plot to the story.

Gate's stupdiest episode finds us wondering if Rory is going to actually have sex with Itami and doing it for fanservice effects.

I cant even explain to my friends what gate is about because....it's about nothing.

Sad thing is, I am watching it because I am hoping it'll go back to the original episodes and the princess won't be too much of an idiot but alas I have zero hope for this low quality piece of garbage.

Well, people say it can't have a sex scene. I do agree, not bluntly but it can have one mentionned.

--> The best example i can give you is, "The Wind Rises" has one, and it's a Ghibli Movie. Even if it's true the characters were adult in both mind and bodies.

The ep was overly moe/fanservice but i feel ppl are making too much a fuss about it. You have the manga if you want it a little more mature in every topic, the tone of the anime was showed long ago, and such ep wasn't really suprising.

I'm not bothering with spoiler tags now just to fully "address" the issues he has with Gate in general.

The princess is only partly an idiot (because of the "art"), but even if she's a genius she's not exactly powerful even with her own family. She's not the heir. She's not even the second eldest. We won't see any of her siblings/half-siblings however, except for the heir to the throne. Being the de facto liaison between the two sides is nothing short of a miracle for her.

I AM NOT A FAN OF RORY MERCURY so the fanservice isn't to my liking either. But by and large the anime is great, better than Charlotte at least.

Not sure what your point is, when the japanese goverment abandoned Itami and co. their best case scenario was that Itami would manage to escape while the rest of the group would be captured and taken overseas by one or several nations. Worst case scenario would be would end up dead (either by enemy fire or taking their own lives).

Again you ignore the fact that this operation was assembled in a day. Also you are under the naive impression that the US would not do a half assed operation ever, heck, from day one the second iraq war was a half assed operation with no hope of long term success since no attempt whatsoever was made to win "the hearts and minds" of the locals. Your national infrastructure is deteriorated (Katrina was just the wake up call and nothing has changed a decade later). Oh, and before you repeat that no US president would be as stupid to send guns firing into ally teritory and blackmail by phone said prime minister, that is exactly the kind of behavior the world expects from Donald Trump. Oh, you are thinking "no, he will never be elected, he is all talk" then ask your father or grandfather, the exact same things were said about Ronald Reagan's campaign and surprise surprise, he was elected and re-elected and his vp even got one period in the white house. I find the show very enjoyable so far, a lot of good characters specially the 3 girls. this is the first time that i can't find an annoying female among the cast. also having an MC who is not a teenage is refreshing.
I can't find any similarities between this show and SAO other than the art style (since its the same studio obviously...) imo its a very bad comparison.

Edit: lol @ fate reference... you can also hear "assassin" by the operator in the background when the defense minister is talking, i didn't get the NGE reference though... would someone be kind to point that for me?

Except America didn't screw up in gate because they just happened to half-ass it, they screwed up because they aren't Japan, the greatest country in the world. In essence though they put Japan in that light because seriously, the things happening in our world is just a literal sideshow in the big view of things. So might as well make it positive for them.

The focus is still on the other side of the gate. The most important politicians are the ones in the Empire, not the ones in Earth. The most important politicians from Earth are the ones on the other side of the gate.

And unlike Mahouka, the MC is not OP. Almost died even (along with most of those that went along with him; the rest died).

For arguments sake, if this was a netflix live action series made for the US, Itami (played by silvester stallone) would next episode get his stash of weapons buried inside one box "just in case" and all by himself would kill the invading forces, never getting but "flesh wounds" from any bullets.

If in the real world a hole opened in a country and it lead to another territory inside our own planet (like in the D&D campaign "Hollow World") you can bet that since that country has the only entrance, they would reclaim said territory and barring a full-fledged invasion, no other country could prevent them from doing so.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue here. Is it that America also makes cheesy patriotic schlock? If so I'm not sure why that's relevant, because it doesn't change my opinion of Gate's quality at all to know that there exists media with similar flaws in other countries.

I definitely said above that I thought any country would do this, and would (unlike Japan in Gate) brutally exploit/utterly disregard the wishes and well-being of the natives. The point I was making was that the fact that nobody bats an eye at the annexation of the special region rather than saying "hey, what if the people who live there don't want to be annexed?" is indicative of the show's attitude towards Japan. It's the sort of thing someone writes because they love their country to an unhealthy extent. Unhealthy for their country's neighbors.

More like a nightmare for her. She's not doing all that badly for the hand she's been dealt. She's trying to deal with a military state far more powerful than her own, in a war which her side started. She's terrified of what they can do. Her Empire, given an advantage like that, would use it to take over. She has a hard time understanding why the JDSF isn't doing that. She managed to rally the troops at Italica to hold out until backup arrived. She dealt with her troops beating up Itami. She's spoken with the commander of the JDSF in the Special Region successfully. She's had preliminary discussions with the Foreign Ministry of Japan, and did OK there.

There was people in the first episode that wanted the Gate to be closed, probably individuals and some anti-war organizations ... so the "nobody bats an eye" is incorrect.

Also i don't think any major country leader would say something contradictory as "stop the annexation" since they want to exploit the new world resources for themselves as well.
not to mention nobody can "actually" stop japan from invading since only they can enter.

I can't deny that this show have some patriotic elements and its understandable if some people who are not "Japaneses" can get annoyed with. but it still not as bad as you make it to be... i myself dislike over the top patriotic movies like "American sniper" but this is still within the tolerable levels.

We will get back to that, too bad anime onlys have the patience of = none. They must be satisfied every episode or the anime is automatically bad. (yes I am in a very sour mood right now)

The anime has pretty much been bad ever since the episode the Princess and her knight decided to go with Itami and crew.

The whole foreign agents getting wiped out by glorious nippon soldiers was a little bit too much for my taste. If this wasn't blatant propaganda I don't know what is.

I knew it has something to do with Itami being a soldier that his ex wife divorced him. >_<

It was a good cultural exchange. Love seeing Rory and the others get clothes of their own type. Pina and Bozes turning into fujoshi. Hahaha.

And it seems that the Japan Prime Minister got blackmailed. My goodness.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue here. Is it that America also makes cheesy patriotic schlock? If so I'm not sure why that's relevant, because it doesn't change my opinion of Gate's quality at all to know that there exists media with similar flaws in other countries.

The comparison was meant to make clear that this series is not as over the top patriotic as some people want to make us believe; it is mild if you compare it with the average hollywood war flick. Seems to me some people are afraid that we might start cheering for the JSDF and are making ridiculous comparisons (SAO? Mahouka?) on an attempt to drive off the audience.

Well, for whatever reason most 24-25 episode series always have to have those maybe two or three episodes that are really hit or miss. But then once you go back into the action everyone forgets those episodes and the show gets back on track. This episode isn't really a random beach episode however. Just makes sense to not only treat the other worlders but also lure out the attackers in question while half of the party are only alert to the danger.

People are also acting like this is the first time ANY Japanese writer or author has EVER done the whole "Japan is the best and strongest country in the world, and other countries are pure evil" Don't give me that BS. Several famous anime/manga/movies from Japan all have that theme or symbolism. They just keep it under a different name, species, or event to keep the foreign otakus to keep buying their merchandise.

For a great example, see "Zero", the movie. This is a hard to find Sony movie about the Mitsubishi Zero fighter during WWII. It has all the cliches of American war movies, but from the other side.

It wasn't "THE" reason.

Itami was a soldier when she married him. Was part of the reason why she married him. Cause he was a stable money person. The REAL reason why she divorced him was that He didn't know that she actually loved him at all. That her whole "if you take care of me, I'll marry you" proposal made her sound like she was nothing but a self-serving spouse looking for stability, A marriage of convenience. (A common practice in Japan BTW.) And not one built on love and companionship. The whole flashback with Itami saying "don't worry, if something happens to me you'll get insurance benefits" was a dagger in her heart. She blamed herself because she made him think that way. She blamed him for being a BAKA and not understanding her. That's when she asked for the divorce. That way they can start over. If things get better again, they can become a couple the right way. If not, then it's for the best.

The manga explained her position better. So yeah it's not all from the Anime. The manga she was more specific when she said, "I loved him". They went with the "he doesn't know how a women feels" in the Anime, such ambiguous crap writing there.

We all know Rori is going to make him, a love slave.

Like I said it's RAMBO-esce. It's designed for a nationalistic purpose. You overlook it cause it's not your culture and you understand it.

It Just gets annoying when people try and rationalize that the script was actually well thought out, plausible, and full of realistic scenarios. The whole farcical "Japanese Diet" scene should be enough to tell you how stupid the crossing the gate arc was. They should have kept everyone in Arnus Hill and skipped the arc al together.

I don't think the Diet was that unrealistic. Yes I am aware what the author was mainly trying to do with this arc, but the whole modern world mainly have no idea what is going on in the Special region. For the citizens and media to demand answers, Itami couldn't just refuse and keep going.

Meh, to me it seemed silly. bringing over foreigners from another world to grill them about percieved domestic logistics issue. I'd definitely have a lot more questions for them other than that.

It was another one of those nationalistic moments. Making anti-JDF look like foolish imbeciles for the sake of promoting the military as heroes.

In response to Cirris's comment.

I think I can get behind this, but you have to admit, no matter how stupid or senseless something is, a studio's job is to RESPECT the source material. Making it better is it's second job and done only if the director cares enough. But yeah, they should have skipped this arc since I hated this arc and everything in the other world before and after this is far more interesting.

Also I don't think it's that people try to rationalize tat scene but more of try to say why you shouldn't be flaming to drop it for one episode where it is fanservicy.

A new PV was posted today at the official site "gate-anime.com".

Then it was take down from YouTube due to a complaint from the "Broadcast Content Proper Distribution Promotion Coordinating Committee" (放送コンテンツ適正流通推進連絡会).

Someone who can type Japanese might want to tell them via their Twitter feed, at https://twitter.com/gate_anime

True enough. I was surprised they kept the service-ish Rory scene where she's having an orgasm on the Ithalica walls and seducing Itami in flimsy half worn robe.

It'll be interesting if they show the introduction scene of ...
