I constantly get told i don't look like i watch anime and don't even fully understand what that means... i didn't think you had to look a certain way to watch and enjoy anime.

That sounds like quite a specific thing to say. If I did my hair and wore some nice clothes, and then told someone who knew enough about anime to have preconceptions on what a fan would look like that I watched anime; then I could probably illicit that response from them. But it's not something that would happen often naturally I think.

When my friends found out that I watch anime they had a surprised look on their face, so I get what you mean.

I've never had anyone say that but people have generally been surprised that I watch anime though. So I don't fit the stereotype, I doubt most viewers do.

There is a reason why those people stand out.

How about a "I'm surprised you don't watch anime" kind of response from people. Asian kids know the feeling when they get lumped together with the rest of us hahaha

I've been told that I "don't look like" someone who would watch anime, or play video games. I'm not entirely sure what they expect me to look like, fat and greasy with an aversion to sunlight or something? It doesn't happen with anime so much, but being female and a video game fan has also gotten me the usual "oh, most girls aren't into video games" response.

I guess people just hold a certain stereotype or image in their head of people who are fans of certain things. It just surprises me that some people hold these images so dearly that they honestly get shocked whenever they meet someone who doesn't fit their preconceived image.

I have never been informed of this. Mostly because I don't tell people I watch anime.

Shit, most people I see here on MAL seem to hide the fact they watch anime like they're trying to hide leprosy from the world hahahaha

People at my school tell me I don't look like I watch it at all. But then again I don't wear any merch so that could be why lol

No one other than my friends who watch anime know that I watch anime.

My other friends and colleagues don't know. So not much discussion about anime in general.

That's exactly what they expect. Fat, smelly, mouth breathing, neck beard (irrespective of gender), greasy, anti social, single and desperate, no fashion sense, weird, owning a shrine to anime girls, etc.

You can blame the Internet for that stereotype.

I haven't even told anybody about me watching it. I don't really see a reason to either.
