Self-explanatory title!

Just wondering how you guys choose what anime to watch.

For me, basically three things: ratings, instincts, & visual/animation quality. I do take into consideration recommendations/reviews and the hype, but for the most part its those 3.

Out of the three though I think the visuals and ratings are a must for me. I don't care much about genre since I'm pretty much open to anything except for full out sexual shit lol. Everything else does play a little part in my decision but again it comes down to the first three I mentioned
Do you just go for the highest rated thing on your list? But then I don't want to waste all the "classics" right off the bat. Or do you just pick randomly?

Classics first and foremost. Time's ticking, and I can't waste it watching some mainstream shounen anime where fights take 24-48 minutes each, with the combatants taking most of the time to talk about their motives and life story, and having flashbacks all the same.

I look at my backlog and think, "Hmm, what am I in the mood for..." and decide based on what genre I feel would hit the spot at the time. Which is why a lot of my backlog is random drama or inane comedy, because I rarely get around to them. Of course, the decision making process is influenced heavily by various other factors such as things I've just finished (rarely want something of the same type back to back) and whether somebody else wants to watch with me, what format I have the series in (pulling out DVDs can be a bother when I'm feeling exceptionally lazy) among other less quantifiable factors.

Not really any fancy process or anything, and I certainly don't pay attention to ratings and suggestions as I've found them to be very unreliable (gao Kuyuchi and his damn Princess Tutu).

Bah, you're just weird. <3 Princess Tutu is a masterpiece.

I agree, though--I largely just watch what I'm in the mood for, which can vary and shift wildly. I can be in the mood for lighthearted comedy like Lucky Star one minute, then crave a good ten-minute ass-kicking the next.

Unless there's something in particular I want to see, I either look through the classics, ask /a/, or look at one of these:
EDIT: Bah, never mind, for some reason I'm just getting a red x, so..

My current anime list is grossly, out of date, just so you know.

I simply watch everything in no particular order, so there's usually no "next" anime for me. The new shows have priority. I usually watch about a half of the ongoing shows, then watch the rest when they're completed. And at the rare times when I have nothing new to watch, I just watch some random old show.
Also, "classics" are overrated. The older the show - the bigger your chances to see a really crappy story full of the plotholes, weak characters and primitive dialogues like,
- We need to go.
- Yes, we need to go.
*they're going somewhere*
- We arrived.
- Yes, we arrived.
*they're doing something*
- Let's return.
- Yes, let's return.
Basically, that sums up most of the shows from 1970s and 1980s. 1990s are better, but there's still only a few shows that everyone must see by any cost.

Kind of gave up on anime about now, but back then, I just use to go on animesuki, and download series which has a lot of seeders, so I could get it ASAP, lol. Some I come to like, or love, and some I came to hate, or dislike. Series like TTGL or Code Geass, I don't even remember how I came to pick them up. It wasn't through my prior method. I could tolerate almost any genre back then, but lately, I've gotten extremely picky, which I think I could stop watching anime altogether, very soon.

I try not to watch two of the same genre In a row

If I've Just finished a good drama (Kanon2006) I most likely would go for some mindless comedy next or something to make me laugh.. otherwise I wouldn't feel good If that drama had gotten to me .. lol.. same with the mindless comedies.. I'd rather keep my braincells

First I check som stuff on MAL (recommendations, popularity etc), then I put some of them on my plan to watch list (where they mey be for a long time). And someday I'll pick it out of the list by gut feeling.

This system is awesome, it decides for you~

1) Go to PTW list

2) Check what I have downloaded

3) Figure out what I'm in the mood for

4) Start watching

There are two distinct things on this.

1. Order of Download

I use two methods
a) Random Number Generator
b) As someone that I know that knows about anime what should I watch next
c) Download whatever someone close recommended vividly

2. Order of Watch

It entirely depends on the order of dvd burning. I watch by alphabethic order inside the same dvd

I usually randomly pick an anime that I listed as high priority(most interesting) in my plan to watch list. I do try to avoid back to back dark or gloomy shows.

Recommendations, or I choose something new for the season.
Sometimes I also choose something based on a picture I've seen... if the art looks good or something I might decide to watch it.

i decide by going to the forms and looking for fun posts. then from there i go to people profiles. then i check out their favorites and see if i would like them, if i don't or i have already watch them, then i go compare what i have watch and what they have watched. from their i get the ones that only they have watch and i go and look and try to find one that i like!

or i just go from my favorites and hop from recommendation to recommendation until i find something. or i just give up with amine and find something to do like game it up! :)

Ah and how I choose anime to watch as in to Plan to Watch?

A variety of methods:

1. Recommendation. Anything that someone recommends me I watch for respect to that person.
2. Anything very low rated: if it's shit I want to see why
3. Any sports anime
4. From clubs relations: here I usually look at synopsis and check out what interests me or not
5. Any BL anime
6. Favourites from my friends
7. Things I find out randomly and that seem interesting
8. Things where my favourite people participated <3

I'll be in the mood for a certain genre or type of anime and pick a show from it that looks interesting to me. Sometimes there's a particular show I get interested in for whatever reason. Other times it's friend recommendations or just wanting to see what all the hype is about for certain shows.

Usually, my "on-hold" list are the ones I am going to watch next but since I decided to only watch 15 animes at once.. Every time I finish watching one, I would replace it with one from the "on-hold" list but only problem is that my list is quite huge, so it is somewhat of a difficult choice.

Aside from that, I rarely update my "on-hold" and "plan to watch" list as that there are still many animes which I intend on dropping yet I haven't gone through the lists yet.

I just pick those that sound the most interesting. Sometimes I judge based on the art work though. If the character designs look interesting too I will watch it. Though animes with another season or spin offs that I have already watched always come first when I am picking what to watch. Really it just depends on my mood and random pick really XD

Well i do not really have a set system for how I choose what I watch, but generally I will try to be watching something from a few different genres at the same time, so that whenever I'm in the mood to watch that type of anime, I can just watch some episodes as I please.

And I'll generally watch shows from different time periods simultaneously by watching a few shows that are airing, watching some old school stuff from the 70's or 80's and then watch anything from shows that have just finished airing recently or a long time ago.

It basically depends on what looks good at the time when I finish watching another show.

I usually check the rating...then the type of anime (slice of life, drama, school)..and so on..I never check the summary because I don't I hate when I know whats going to happen in an anime..And last but not least I check if I can download the anime ...I rarely watch an anime online...

Well, I get animes by going alphabetically down a list of animes to get that I have. Then, from the ones I have, I more or less pick randomly. But I try to trade off between animes I think I'll really enjoy and ones I'm not so sure will be good at all, so that I don't end up with a string of 10 animes that could all turn out to be painful to watch.

I just watch what looks interesting to me. I find it hard though to keep watching a bunch of "serious" anime (had to take a 2 or 3 breaks from monster to just watch something light-hearted). I find comedy and comedy/romance/drama to be the easiest to get into and I end up watching a lot of shows like that.
