I'm depressed myself quite often, and to be honest, I just want to read manga and watch anime with things like this. I don't mean things like Elfen Lied either. I want an Anime or Manga that has continuous self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and struggles. Also please do not comment say things about getting over depression, I wish for recommendations not advice on how to get over depression.

I made a post on this awhile back so I'll just post it here.

Aoi Bungaku Series (the first four episodes "No Longer Human"). It's actually a book adaptation.

.hack//Sign's main character Tsukasa is a loner and suffers from depression. The anime has a video game premise, but deals with escapism, interpersonal relationships, etc. It has more in common with Lain with it's atmosphere. It's best viewed as a character study in my opinion.

Onii-sama e... has themes/topics of suicide, depression, drug addiction, divorce, etc.

Haibane Renmei gets darker as it progresses with certain characters going through depression, guilt for past mistakes and so forth.

Narutaru has the character Akira Sakura who self-harms.

Welcome to the NHK.

Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Manga:

Life by Keiko Suenobu
Confidential Confessions
Jisatsu Circle
Oyasumi Punpun
Jisatsutou
Himizu
Kizu (Wounds)

Is there anything like the manga called "Life" if you read the beginning you'll see what I mean.

Colorful is a very nice movie that deals with depression.

Even though these 3 series don't exactly fit your criteria, they may be worth checking out aswell: Welcome to the NKH, Haibane Renmei and Ano Hana.

If you're also interested in manga, Oyasumi Punpun is exactly what you're looking for.

Welcome to NHK

http://myanimelist.net/anime/1210/NHK_ni_Youkoso!

Admittedly there is no self harm but it is very depressing a lot of the time and suicide does become a major theme later on in the anime.

Kokoro Connect

http://myanimelist.net/anime/11887/Kokoro_Connect

Might seem cheerful at first but it really isn't and there isn't a single arc where one of the characters is not depressed over something

Aoi Bungaku Series (Didn't watch, but at least episode 1-4 is about suicidal thoughts. Should be rough. as it's 18+)

I kinda feel weird, because I know a lot of those, sadly most of them suck.

The few good ones, in my opinion, are;

Tsumi to Batsu: A Falsified Romance, The suicidal moment doesn't happen in the beginning, so, sorry for the spoiler, but it's a seriously good manga.

Koe no Katachi, Again, sorry for the spoiler, but you have to read this manga, it's just an amazing manga to open your mind. It made me learn ASL.

To you, the immortal, Again, it's kind of a spoiler, but the suicidal behavior happens more than just once.

Epic of Gilgamesh, Much like the previous one, except the suicide is literally the first part of the story.

Imawa no Kuni no Alice, So half of the story is build up in order to make the main character kill himself eventually, you'll get what I mean. oops, spoilers ;)

There are many others, but they were all suggested, so I had to choose some manga that weren't solely about suicide.

Life manga is really good. I have read it myself and pretty liked it. Self harm and suicide thoughts start from chapter 1 to the very end. Yes the girl doesn't always self harm but she keeps mentioning

not anime or manga, but i'd recommend picking up a subscription to Heavy Metal magazine.

Another good investment would be "The Heroin Diaries" which is like an autobiography/graphic novel. It's like, pretty much the Bible of drugs/depression.

I'm kind of hesitant here, because I have a feeling this could possibly encourage you to get into opiates as some naive kid thinking they should because of depression. Stuff like this is supposed to scare people away from it, or motivate addicts into quitting. I've been depressed for literally 20 years, and speaking from experience, withdrawal is the fucking worst. Depression makes drugs seem like the perfect fix for it at first, but it's not worth it. Like, if you think your life is wrecked now, just wait till you're broke, unemployed and/or homeless and coming down on burning muscle aches and fever chills that will ensure you get an hours sleep at most for the coming month.

+1 Orange
+1 Oyasumi Punpun

I'll also add Ningen Shikakku. It was a manga adaptation of Osamu Dazai's work with the same title. It's heavy and depressing, and it includes the topic of suicide too.
