As a girl who is into anime and some video games, I occasionally find myself in the company of 'nerdy guys'. Whilst they're nice people, I find that they can be so judgemental and sexist to women who also find interest in these things, assuming that they're not as good or as much of a fan as they are. for example, today I was a part of a pokemon tournament for my region in the UK, and I won, along with my teammate. so many guys said i only won the competition because i was riding on the back of my teammates advice and a team my housemate helped me decide on. I find this mildly offensive because it's implying that i'm incapable of performing well on my own, and i discussed this with my female friends and many of them have experienced the same attitudes. So females on this forum, have you experienced sexism from elitist male nerds? Or males have you experienced elitism from female nerds? Or have you ever been elitist based on gender? If so why? |

''Women seem wicked when you're unwanted'' I think this rings true. I've generally had a good relationship with women, and so I've no reason to be a misogynist. I am a sexist though. |

I got exposed to a pretty huge load of it in my WoW days. Whenever I won an arena I would get the obligatory "bitch you cheated" PM (but anyone who wins a lot gets this, tbh). That's why I stopped skyping at one point. Bleh, don't give a shit anymore, though (probably because I kinda stopped playing online all together lol). |

Yep, I come across stuff like that all the time. Even with people that are trying to get close to me pull the same shit. I've been collecting figures for years upon years now and someone who got into it through me last year always acts like I have no clue what he's talking about when he talks about a figure. Of course I fucking do, and he knows that. But he's always gotta try to one up me on all sorts of shit and he always acts like he knows more or what-have-you. Someone I considered a best friend for a couple years also told me a couple months ago at work that I'm 'not a real gamer anyways' during a conversation. And that's just because he plays FPS and I don't. Sorry, I had enough of FPS back when I played Halo tourneys in high school, don't need the newest Call-of-Crack. Not to mention the amount of bullshit directed towards female players on those games is ridiculous. I tend to prefer one player games these days because of the shit I used to go through trying to play multi-player games online. Hilariously enough that shit only happened when I was on speaker. Any other time no-one would say anything besides I was doing awesome. Funny how that works, right? There's also only one comic store in the entire area I live in that I go to, because they don't discriminate. The owner is cool and all his employees are too, which is awesome because it's on the drive to and from work for me. At one of the stores down the street in the opposite direction, I walked in one time and I got stared down by the owner behind the counter, and then told 'don't touch anything, you'll ruin the comics' (about the weeklies). Other (male) customers were in the store browsing, but apparently I couldn't because I was a woman. GASP, woman in a comic shop, that never happens! (or just doesn't for him because he's an ass) Two other shops in the area treat women the same way. It's happened to my manager too, at two of those places. I don't think she's been to the third one as it's way out of her way. Ayuup, happens all the time. Been happening all my life, everywhere. It fucking sucks when you're somewhere or doing something or being generally cool and someone tries to rain on your parade. There's always that guy that thinks he's tough shit and is trying to either one-up you because you're a female, or apparently genuinely believes that whatever the hell he's doing is for men only. |

I find it stupid when people are sexist. Everyone is equal in my books. As long as you work hard at something, anyone can achieve the same results. Also I don't think this is "true" sexism. They were just angry that they lost. Gender doesn't matter. Also I have never came across this in my life. |

The first guy I've never thought was a friend, but he just happens to always be around when I'm hanging out with people and singles me out to trash on me. The second person is no longer considered a friend, and CoD was just an example. He plays all FPS. But that's -all- he plays. The way he toned his argument to me was definitely in a sexist way, with the wording. I just wasn't about to put the whole thing in my thread reply. |

If you're a girl it's a sexist comment. If you're black it's a racist comment. If you're gay it's a homophobic comment. If you're old/young it's an agist comment. If you're anything other than them, it's an "other"ist comment. Video games are highly competitive. People will insult other people in an attempt to put you below them. I wouldn't take it too seriously. |

I do think guys tend to be more elitist. I think I was one of those guys last year when my friend and I were considering hanging out with one of our anime-watching friends, but (surprise surprise?) she was a girl, and we ultimately decided against it. We came to our senses pretty soon after. We give her a call and if she has the time, she hangs out. I think we (guys) just think that they (girls) don't think the same way. |

Stereotyping of women != sexism. Claiming that more men than women like geeky stuff like gaming is not sexism. Claiming that they are by definition worse than men is, however. Also, you have to make generalizations to discuss pretty much any topic on a larger scale. |
