Regardless of the varying quality in mainstream and moderately popular shonen, are lesser known shonen any good? In terms of story. animation, or anything else? Like Soul Eater, Kekkaishi, D.Gray, and anything else I haven't heard of, which do you recommend, and what is so good about it? Thanks. |

bergil said: Since when popularity equals to quality? When did I say that? I said "regardless of the varying quality of mainstreams shonen" = mainstream shonen can be good or bad. But which of the less popular ones are good enough to get into? tehapoc, I'd rather follow the anime then continue with the manga afterward, which of these are actually good? |

Well going by your taste, they are pretty average, nothing quite like HxH. |

I remember the first 4-6 episodes of DGM, the story of the puppets was powerful to me, but I felt that this is as good as it gets, and afterward it's all about standard affair, am I just overthinking it? |

Clearly OP, it depends what you want from your 'shounen' anime. I'd give Soul Eater props for some extremely well portrayed fights, but it gets points off for a pretty painful original-end. Ao no Exorcist has fans because it looks pretty. judals said: That's about what I took from it. The setting, atmosphere, and designs were intriguing at first, and it had a sense of urgency/danger that similar shounen's lack.I remember the first 4-6 episodes of DGM, the story of the puppets was powerful to me, but I felt that this is as good as it gets, and afterward it's all about standard affair, am I just overthinking it? On the other hand, the storyline turned out to be quite typical and relied on the usual powerups and battle-match ups. |

I find that a lot of less known shounens are really good. I really enjoy the sports ones as well. Soul Eater and D.Grayman are both great animes as well to check out. Put everyone has there different tastes and opinions so its really up to you to decide. |

Most of the mainstream shounen are pretty average/bad. I see... a gintama and hajime no ippo hater. Did you really watched them or just hating the popularity? |

What else are there other than the 3 I mentioned? Is there something really good that is overshadowed and never got a chance to be recognized? Boxhero, I find myself biased against sports shonen for some reason lol. Ckan, I see, bummer. So I'll check out some SE fights at least Lang, I didn't like them, to be honest. |

I wouldn't say DGM's story is completely a standard fare, but I wouldn't say it's particularly good either. As it progresses, it becomes more and more convoluted (referring to the manga), difficult to follow (not in a good sense that makes you think, but in a sense of being a mess) and kinda directionless. I actually quite like it overall because I've been following it for years, but it's not something I can go around recommending. At this point I think I'm just waiting for it to conclude, no matter how, although even that may take who knows how long. |

well my fav shonen is quite obscure, it has very good animation, good fights an some memorable death scenes.... that being said after looking at your scores it seems that you hate shonen an you should probably watch something else outta the 3 you mentioned ive only seen DGrayman an i thought it was average at best |

If the shonen is more like Fullmetal Alchemist for example, not necessarily too many fights, that would be cool. Over-the-top is welcome too (like JoJo) |

What about TTGL? Anyway you should read seinen instead of searching for a shounen that doesn't exist other than those you've seen. There are other shounen that you haven't mention, like Shaman King, but it's still the typical generic power up stuff, I guess. |

Well I tried looking for stuff similar to Berserk to no avail, now I'm looking for something more general. TTGL was more childishly bombastic than OTT, JoJo was graceful about it. Is Beelzebub any good? |

Beelzebub is a comedy series, not one to be taken seriously. It is a very simple story with no depth whatsoever, nothing like HxH and Berserk. But hey, it's a comedy after all.. -.- |

Try Heroman, its a pretty interesting anime, enjoyed the art and the fight scenes. Despite the robot, its not really a mecha type anime, fluid evolving battle style along the series. http://myanimelist.net/anime/4334/Heroman |

Is Beelzebub any good? It's hilarious. Fights were done poorly in the anime though imo. Manga is the same so far, but less funny. The fights from what I have sampled from the manga are better than the anime. Another great underrated shounen would be Toriko. (Manga) The most recent arc was great. Truly fun to read and the battles are epic. |

^ Adding to that, it starts off with gag episodes (the first 15+?), and later arcs suffer from plot 'spreading'. The 'main' storyline gets padded out and interspersed with (mostly) uninteresting anime-original/or/filler. |

Actually, I don't even know why you still haven't started it. If you're OK with manga, you should try Hoshi No Samidare, it's not really shounen, but it does really interesting move with your classic shounen tropes, and though it isn't really like HxH or Jojo, I'm sure you can like it. |

I don't mind internal monologues, in fact I think most shonen misuses them and they break the flow, so that's a good thing (probably), but as your other points, they are enough to discourage me from watching it. Is there anything like early one piece? Going from place to place, with mild-to-intermediate powers? A grand adventure? The only one I remember is the 70's anime Sinbad no Bouken (no not the Magi OVA), which was about Sinbad, Alladin and Alibaba (without the metro/bishie looks) and their adventures. If you're a fan of OP and don't mind old animation, I recommend this to you, except you probably won't find any site that has it. Setsu, I will try that after catching up with VS and Vagabond, thanks. |
