Don't get me wrong, Bioshock is not a BAD game. but it doesn't deserve the huge amount of praise that it recieved and continues to recieve.

It's no Deus Ex.

It's no System Shock 2.

It just feels bland and boring to me. Most of your objectives are the typical collect and destroy shit, and that doesn't really gel with the maturity and depth the developers obviously wanted to convey. There are no real characterisations of worth and hardly any player interaction in what was supposed to be a living city at one point. It feels more linear than Half Life 2. The splicers become boring and repetitive and the weapons you have to use against them are very effective(the game is easy) yet at the same time uneffective(you feel no powe).

The atmosphere was decent but other games have done that sort of dystopic world much better. It was a shame how after the stunning intro sequence the tension and atmosphere died as you started to be hauled around a rather samey and predictable world. The music was boring, the voiceacting overdramatic, and the graphics and animation were alright but didn't really have the scale or grittiness of a great city. It felt a bit like Pixar crossed with System Shock 2.

The only time I really felt any surprise or excitement was at some of the big twists in the story line. They were well done, but apart from that, fail.

Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough to 'understand'.

I was disappointed with this game because I felt it would be something more than the typical fps, and it wasn't.

Score: 6/10

I usually have no interest in FPS. I typically dislike them as well. It's been too long since I played the other two you mentioned, so I can't compare (and I didn't play either at length). But Bioshock interested someone like me. I played, start to finish, and it had my full attention. I thought it was fun (but too easy). For that, I think Bioshock is worthy of praise. I liked the world and atmosphere and would often get caught/interrupted staring at the scenery by angry goons. I thought the story was interesting, although the main delivery in the form of recordings was kinda weird. The security mini game that ripped off the old pipe game was really fun too. I almost always HATE mini games. Bioshock made me like things I usually don't.

Perhaps what drew a non-FPS player to it alienated regulars more? I guess others will tell.

Its not as great as people make it out to be because chances are, most of those people probally wouldnt have played Deus Ex or System Shock 2 however it is quite a polished game. There really isnt much you can fault about it, yet there isnt much thats different. Its one of those games where it does everything well, it just happens to be unique because most people havent played these games before.

I can't judge much, because I haven't played the game for very long, but i found it a little bit boring. but still fun as hell.

Never played it and probably never will. I have no interest in games like that.

It's also interesting to notice that it's only the youngest who are talking about those games like they're the ultimate reference ! (looks like you were only 8 when Deus Ex was out, op was 9)

Probably because Bioshock was billed by Irrational Games as the spiritual successor to System Shock 2 countless times up to it's release. They are quite different aside from taking a precursory glance at the overall mechanics and themes.

It's not really my genre, but I watched a friend play through parts of it. Thought the atmosphere was pretty cool, and the "Little Sister" things creeped me out.

The last boss was uber cliche, though. Voice acting was terrible - very overacted - but I've come to expect that from video games.

As far as I know, the game has more spawn/recovery points than monsters, hacking =/= plumbing, and other bullshit that kills the fun for me.

I love this game, but the best FPS of all time it is not. It was fun for the weekend it took to beat it.

I first played Deus Ex at age 11.
