I dunno about you guys, but I'm sensing some gay vibes in this show. The girls are potentially gay for each other (with Komaki being the more obvious of the two) and Kyouichi and Tatsuma being the other obvious gay pairing.

Being as this seems to be your typical shounen show, it's pretty unlikely that these pairings will actually pan out in canon in favor of a more traditional hetero pairing, but I personally wouldn't mind reading a few fics that explore the concept (which is saying something, considering I hardly ever read fic anymore, and especially not of anime shows).

So anyways, what do you all think?

Hm...well...I haven't noticed anything, but then again I haven't gotten around to the second episode yet.

I dunno. I think you can find "gay subtext" in almost every single anime if you look hard enough or read too far into what the characters say and do. But that doesn't mean it actually exists.

Gay subtext is quite an ambiguous thing, and two episodes in I'm probably jumping the gun. :-p I was just hoping maybe someone else had a similar way of watching shows. (It's hard to find a decent anime with ACTUAL lesbians in it, so I end up making up couples ^.^;;)

Haha - I gotcha. :)

I think they're definitely writing Komaki to be a strong female character (doesn't someone call her man-woman in the first episode?), but I'd be surprised if she ended up a lesbian.

Come to think of it, I don't know that I've ever seen a lesbian couple in any series. Odd.

Could it be that you're just thinking gay?
I don't see any gay subtext in this show at all.

Oh it's possible and I sure as hell hope there is a gay subtext. However, it could just be a more realistic look at Japanese school life where the majority of teens split into groups by gender, guys are friends with guys and girls are friends with girls.. nothing else. But yeah, any further exploration of gay relationships in this super shounen series would never happen. =(

Well, anybody have something to say about episode 5? About the 'lover's quarrel' and 'You look down, boyfriend.' =P

It's obvious it's being hinted and joked at the gayness, but whether it happens? ;-) Unless they try to do something groundbreaking, hmm.

yeah, there was generally a whole lot of gay in episode 5, but it wasn't ridiculous or anythingl, it added to the character development. aoi and komaki have angst, which should be expected among girls, and kyouichi no longer feels the need to remind everyone that he has a penis every two seconds.

there were also stuffed animals eating people's heads. just thought i'd mention that o.O

Code Geass is another. I'm not too fond of the biggest lesbian character there though - she's rather irritating. But she's one of the more overtly homosexual characters I've seen in a show where that isn't a focal point. Vandread has a few lesbian couplings too, but given the setting (males and females living on completely separate planets and fighting each other) it's not surprising.

As for the topic at hand, I'm not so sure about the guys but there's definitely something between Aoi and Komaki, even if it's just one-sided.

Well, I've never seen this, but the reason I am commenting is to laugh at my own stupidity.. It was the first link for the Anime Discussion, and for some reason I assumed it was in General Anime Discussion, so when I read the first post and the poll, I was like "What the hell? Did this person suddently realize that some anime has gay undertones.. serisouly this person must not really watch anime.... And what is with that poll?" And then before reading further, I decided to check out where I really was, and I found it was in this show's discussion... Yes. I am stupid, sorry for momentarily thinking you were.......

*smacks head against table*.. I blame being sick and a bit delusional. Yes..

Oh no!! Just when the series was getting really good. Hopefully it's just the first arc that's finishing though, I've always wondered why it has "The Dark Law Chapter" (or whatever it is) at the beginning of each episode.

Yeah, I agree with that. Plus translations might not be entirely accurate. Who knows what Kyouichi meant by "You look down, boyfriend?"? And anyway, there might be tons of different meaning behind that sentence.

No, seriously people I saw the subtext from episode one. And episode 4 and 5 were just handing it out like fliers. I don't even like yuri but it was absolutely obvious. But this show is sure to keep the yaoi fans happy.

and... is there going to be a 3rd season?
i've been searching for a fansubbing club who has ended with the subs of all the eps, but i haven't found one yet, so i don't know how season 2 ends. *sigh*

It's better if you find out for yourself. I got a translation of sorts on my site (go to my profile, click the link)... then Fanworks > Drama track translations > CD 3. You can listen to the drama tracks as well on those pages.

I completely agree with this statement. The subtle yaoi or yuri implications are a total fan service, there to see it if you want to.

Of course I see where everyone is coming from regarding Komaki and Aoi, but a strong attachment does not a lesbian make. I agree the girls are close friends, and Komaki obviously a possessive mother-hen to Aoi. But I hardly see theirs as a sexual relationship, and I see no desire for it between them. They behave towards each other exactly as the Oribe sisters; Yukino is aggressive and protective of shy, naïve Hinano, even gaining the nickname Komaki No.2 from Kyouichi. And I certainly hope folks don't think of the sisters as being lustfully attached to each other?!

And all jokes and teasing between the characters aside, I don't see a yaoi relationship between Kyouichi and Tatsuma at all in the anime. Kyouichi clearly has a thing for Aoi, and just because he's a bouncer for a drag club doesn't mean he likes men. That's actually jumping to conclusions! From a psychological viewpoint (after watching his flashback moments) Big Mama and the drag queens are more like his extended family, not his lovers. And Tatsuma is so sensitive towards girls, I can't picture him not likin' the ladies.

I really don't think you can use the details from the drama CDs as straight-up facts for the characters. They were obviously made not to be serious, but to offer a lighter, comical side to the already dark anime. I think they're spoofing the implications for a laugh, nothing more.

I will add, from what I understand of the original game, as someone who has never played, it is a strategy game where your choices decide how your relationships with other characters will progress, much like the Japanese dating-type games. Someone even said that, based on how you play, you get a character at the end professing their love, which could be a girl (to you as Tatsuma) or a guy (to you as Tatsuma). So there is evidence of yuri and yaoi from the game, too.

If one were to read too deeply into the psychology of the characters, the only one that I could picture as gay would be Tendou Kodzunu. Why? The Japanese wikipedia says of his anime personae that he has an Oedipus complex, and according to Freud, if unresolved, such a complex could lead to homosexuality. There you go. I dunno if he's that bad off, though; he does have a sort of tunnel-vision that no one else matters in the world except for himself and his Kaa-sama.

Anyhow. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.
