Sakamichi no Apollon looks interesting and I guess that's not many considering how many people are on mal. It does have a great score. As for slice of life I tend to like the ones that don't have much of a plot and don't have too many emotional parts. That way I can just relax while watching it. One of my favorites is GJ-bu, there is only one kinda sad part and its generally simple. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it. |

Personally, I think that Wolf's Rain is very underrated. Nobody really talks about it and it deserves more attention than it gets. |

Speaking of sad anime, here is an anime that should be required viewing by all anime fans. This anime is probably one of the Worst ever commercially produced. It is so bad that is really funny and enjoyable, It is... Mars of Destruction....This 20 min. OVA is the lowest rated anime on MAL. Famous for it's corny dialogue, amazing plot and wooden animation. When a girl with her head blown off is brought to the hospital, the doctor sadly informs her friends, "She won't Make it". Make sure you watch it with the English dub. Some of the MAL reviewer's get into the fun of this show and write glowing reviews which are a hoot to read. Watch this for fun and try writing your own rave review :-) |

Its sad for a whole different reason. lol that line "she wont make it" is famous because of mars of destruction. At least I have heard it every time someone explains why its so bad. Is the dub worse because I have it subbed but have not watched it yet. |

I was mistaken, it's only subbed. What I liked about the anime is that some poor studio actually put a lot of time and money into it and yet came out with such a piece of crap. Best if watched with friends while drunk or stoned. |

I hear that a lot and it is true, but you're missing something really good. Watch it alone so no one sees you cry. It was made by Studio Ghibli if that helps. |

Before you watch Grave of the Fireflies, you might want to watch Barefoot Gen. This is an anime about a boy who survived the Atom bombing of Hiroshima. It was written by Keiji Nakazawa, and is based on his own experience. He watched his Father and siblings burn to death and the effects of radiation on the population. It is absolutely gut wrenching but also hopeful to know that he survived to write about it when he grew up. This is a must watch for people born long after the war. This show will haunt your dreams. |

Damn, you guys. I might as well stop downloading any of the new anime. I haven't heard anything about that. I'm too busy watching all your recommendations. BakaBT just lost me. I tried to register but it was a whiney little bitch about it. "Your screename is too long." " Your password isn't good enough." "You have to enable cookies." "Don't slouch" "Put the toilet lid down." "Don't give me that look." Screw off! Barefoot Gen sounds good, Jym, but I couldn't find any active torrents or streams. Why watch it before GOTFF? |

That's not true, in GOTFF the war doesn't end until about half way or three quarters through the movie. If BG starts with the bombing of Hiroshima, the war ended very shortly afterwards. |

My internet went down again last night so I watched some anime. Barefoot Gen was pretty good. Not as sad as GOTFF, but very graphic. It depicted many things I read about in the Hiroshima book mentioned above. Thank goodness it was only an animation. I saw the sequel, too. It wasn't nearly as good, but still worthy. I saw Mars of Destruction. I didn't find it laughably bad, just bad. I was not amused. Now I'm on episode 10 of Yosuga no Sora. Lots of people are fond of this show and speak highly of it, but it's just boring me. It's just another high school harem story with some pornographic fan service thrown in. There are dozens of shows just like it. Still, it's a good one if you haven't seen those dozens. I also realized that there is a third anime that comes to mind when I list my favorites: Mushishi. This show is laid back and subdued, but very interesting with wonderful music. Mushi are everywhere and mostly harmless. Most people are never aware of them but they can cause some bizarre phenomena and, on the rare occasions when they interact with humans, they can be very dangerous. Ginko is a mushi-shi - one who studies mushi. He travels the country helping people unfortunate enough to get involved with mushi. The job suits him well because for some unknown reason he attracts mushi so it isn't a good idea for him to stay in one place for very long. The last time I looked, the first three episodes are on YouTube. ...I just looked again and it looks like Funi has put all of it up there. |

I have only seen a little so far.(im watching it now) @Grin You must have done it wrong, refer to Jym's instruction on how to do it right. Just kidding, I laughed when the girl got her head shot off because of the crappy animation. ok I finished it and wow. My favorite part was the delayed reaction from most of the characters. I don't think they even mentioned all the characters names. I was going to give it a 1 or a 2 but I wasn't sure if there are yet worse anime out there that deserve a lower score so I settled on a 3.(though Mars of Destruction is the lowest rated on mal) |

Last season I downloaded and was looking forward to watching Chihayafuru 2 but never had the time to even start it - until today. I've watched two episodes and I'm hooked. This is a show where if I told you the plot, it wouldn't seem very interesting, but the characters are what make it good. They're very real and compelling. You can't help but get caught up in the game and their passion for it. |

Monster is very good, Yondy. I just remembered that I read at least part of the manga. I'm downloading Fantastic Children now. I wanted to say more about Chihayafuru in addition to what I said above. If you haven't seen the first season, don't try watching the second. There will be way too much missing information. The following spoiler has actual spoilers regarding the first episode: In the beginning, Chihaya is a beautiful gradeschool girl but she is a tomboy making her much less appealing. I don't really see it but that's the story. At school she befriends a transfer student named Arata who has not made any other friends. She goes home with him one day where he introduces her to karuta. Karuta is a traditional Japanese card game based on 100 poems. It is played using a deck of 100 cards, each with the second verses of these poems. To play, you select 25 of your cards, sit on the floor and lay your cards out face up in front of you. Your opponent sits facing you with his cards in front of him. You then get 15 minutes to memorize the positions of the 50 cards as well as you can. Then a third person, called The Reader, draws a card from his deck and reads the poem. When you recognise the poem you snach up or just knock aside the card in front of you with that poem's second verse on it - yours or your opponent's. If it was your opponent's card you get more points or something and get to select one of yours to replace his that you snatched. The first to run out of cards wins. It sounds simple but there is a lot of subtleties and strategy involved, not to mention that you have to have all those poems down cold. Arata turns out to be the grandson of one of Japan's top champion karuta players and he's no slouch at it himself. He teaches Chihaya how to play and then, using a taped reader, unmercifully beats her into the dust. Most girls would leave and never speak to him again, but Chihaya is hooked. Watching the games is interesting but if that were all there was to the show it would have flopped big time. It's Chihaya's total passion for the game and her ability to inspire others is what makes this show great. The other's become passionate different ways. One loves the poetery and the tradition. One loves the strategy, another the competition. It does all this quite believably. Don't be surprised if you find yourself becoming passionate about it too. PS - I've thought about making a western version of the game using rock lyrics. "There's a lady who's sure..." |

Right, and the card for it would say, "When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed, with a word she can get what she came for." So you would have to find that card, if it is there, and snatch it before your opponent does. Make sure you don't snatch the wrong car. If you do you, your opponent gives you an additional card and you also keep the one you snatched - both go into play on your side. If you had snatched a wrong one of your opponent's cards you end up with two cards you didn't have before. Like I said, describing it doesn't do it justice. Bamboo Dong over at ANN raved about it saying she didn't expect much from it when it turned out to be easily her favorite show of the year. |

Dennou Coil - A Circle of Children. Imagine you have a computer built into a pair of glasses. Put them on and a keyboard appears in the air in front of you. It isn't really there of course but you can use it. Use your hand as you would on a touch screen - open, close. move and resize windows, etc. Cool, huh? But wait. There's more. The town you're in has an identical virtual town overlaid on top of it so your computer can interact with it. You even have virtual pets. That brings us to the plot. It seems that virtual pets are wandering off and getting lost when they're not programmed to do that. So the kids form a "detective agency" to find them. What they find is that the pets are getting lost in corrupted space in the virtual town, but there is a lot more going on in these spaces than lost pets. Now how much would you pay? |

I've been absent for the last two weeks but now I'm back. Damn, I missed so much here. Chihayafuru > When I first heard about it I was like: "damn, that looks awful". Then, a few weeks later a friend of mine(who usually likes the same anime I do) recommended this anime and I went and watched it. Well, I loved every tiny bit of it. 10/10 totally recommended. It actually made me want to play Karuta. Hotaru no Haka & Barefoot Gen > I've heard of them before, but wouldn't have the guts to watch. I mean, war is already full of cruelty and all, but those bombs were just... beyond madness and cruelty and sadism and all that. I wouldn't stand watching anything about it without giving out all hope for humanity and proceeding to kill myself. Not kidding here. About the other ones, I've never really heard of any of them. I'll take a look. |

I'll put those on my list. *sigh* Doesn't look like I'll be watching anything from this season. Last night I saw Ani*Kuri15. It's pretty good and only 18 minutes long. They gathered up fifteen animators and gave each one minute to animate anything they wanted. The results were interesting. I liked all of them and wished they all were longer. Some of them look like they'd make really good shows. |

If you are looking for something light, quick (13 episodes) and really funny, give Kill Me, Baby a look. Its about a girl named Yasuna who is nice, energetic and not terribly bright. She has a classmate who is a no-nonsense assassin named Sonya. Yasuna befriends Sonya whether Sonya wants her to or not (she doesn't). Yasuna tries to hug Sonya startling her. Sonya's training kicks in and she breaks Yasuna wrists. This sort of thing happens a lot. Another girl is the world's lamest ninja and a fourth, known only as the Unused Character, styles herself as Sonya's nemesis but Sonya doesn't even know of her existance. I laughed a lot watching this show. Or you could just watch this video: |
