This is getting us nowhere. It's like we just talk aside eachother.

The bottomline of the annoyance (at least for me) is, that I said: ""I had heard that some distributors had also translated it that way, but I can't find any proof of that. In fact, the only one I found, Crunchyrol, translated it as Ledo" and you repeated that to me when it was me who told you. I do NOT see the need for you to say, afterwards, that Crunchyroll translated it as Ledo.

However you turn it, this was an unnecessary and annoying remark, because I just said the same to you.

It doesn't matter if other animesites (such as animenewsnetwork) do translate it with Red for you to have to repeat that Crunchyroll is using Ledo. What is the f- relevance? There is no necessity to repeat it. It just means what it means.

Let's use an analogy: if I say:

"I heard some Dreamliners exploded on the ground, but I can't find any proof of that. In fact, the only dreamliner I found was american airlines which exploded in the air."

There is no reason to say:

""And if you want to stick to the opinion that the dreamliners of American airlines exploded on the ground, then the fact is, it exploded on the air."

There is simply no reason to repeat that. None. It does not add anything new. It doesn't even ask for any other transportationvehicles. There is no reason to assume I would stick with it exploding on the ground after I myself said that it was in the air; the assumption there is almost patronisingly absurd.

And thus, in short, there was absolutely no necessity for it.

Saying; "yeah, but before that you said ""Well, I guess it's due to the fact that all major transportation vehicles have had explosions on the ground?" You mentioned you could not find any proof from "some air-companies" but this does not mean all the "major transportationvehicles". So my question to you have always been, where are the "major transportationvehicles?"."

But that question does NOT give ANY reason for you to repeat what I said!! That doesn't explain it at all!

Why would not saying what other transportation vehicles exploded on the ground compel you to repeat that the dreamliner of AA exploded in the air??"

I can just not fathom your thoughtpatterns on this. I was talking about distributors when I used Crunchyroll. You were using distributors when using crunchyroll to say the same. Clearly, it was about the distributors, then, agreed? Then why would other animesites be a reason to bring the same distributor up again with the same thing as I already said? It doesn't make any sense.

Other animesites are therefore not distributors, so what do they have to do with your repetition that Cruchyroll, a distributor, uses Ledo, when that is already what I said?

I mean, other animesites can be: animeftw, animenewsnetwork, otakumode, animevice, etc. The vast majority uses Red, some Ledo, and some both. Even wiki's dedicated to the series, such as http://suisei-no-gargantia.wikia.com use Red, and, yes, EVEN crunchyroll DOES use 'Red' in the preview also.

Ok, my question is now: how does mentionning that (or the lack thereof) necessitate(d) repeating the same thing as I said to you? It doesn't.

Mind you, I'm not saying you can't argue those are 'fanmade', or not 'not many', or 'not important enough', or whatever. Those can all be reasonable points to debate the worth of their translation, agreed.

But why would this change ANYTHING to the fact that crunchyroll translated it with Ledo after the preview? There is no need to say it twice. With or without names of 'animesites'.

It's not the debate I have a problem with, it's with your repetition of things I already said. You even omitted it out of my quote when you answered my quotes, I note. there was NO need for it at all. To know what 'other sites' did mention Red, you just had to ask: "And so which sites *do* use Red?", that is all. There was no need to repeat exactly the same what I said just to ask for sites other than distributor Crunchyroll.

In fact, it would have saved us a lot of wasted bandwidth.

And yes, you also have to explicitly say you have done research on the main site, if you want people to know you've done research on the main site. You never indicated that you had, so I don't understand why you think people should just assume it. We're not psychic. I could as well assume that you contacted Gen, then. Did you? Then why would you assume it otherwise?

I wonder how it is that you continue to...seem to fail to note how frustratingly annoying it is when you repeat the same things as has been said to you, as if it wasn't there in the first place. It's like you don't want to recognise the input others have given, but instead act as if it's coming from you. Maybe I'm extra sensitive about it because it's the second time, but it DOES irk me a lot. Since I acknowledge you are quite intelligent and make a lot of sensible contributions, I'm always left wondering if you do it on purpose, then. But then you feel offended if I ask if that's the case.

But what, then? Cultural differences? The fact we miss out on the underlying message (that was certainly the case with your understanding of my use of irony when I asked the question 'Who do we have that speaks Japanese?")?

I would suggest we each ask the other to try to change one thing, so we don't have this sort of endless disputes afterwards as often. I would ask you, in the future, to NOT say exactly the same back as I already said in the post you are responding to. And if you really have to repeat it for an believably necessary reason, to at least say: "As you said;..." and then say it. At least then I'll know you've not skipped, ignored, being sarcastic or try to act as if it's something new you came up with yourself.

Since I believe in reciprocity, you may ask something of me too, of my writings (in the same order of magnitude, obviously). I think if we both pay a little more attention to certain details in our writings, a lot less instances of miscommunication will follow.

What do you say?

Very interesting episode. Their reaction to his "assistance" seemed rather negative. Looks like he won't come back to open arms after saving that salvage ship.

Beautilful ep! The sense of wonder and discovery was what kept me glued to the screen. The technology used by Ledo and Amy make for an interesting contrast to each other.

This was epic, I'm not such a big fan of mecha stuff but the way this is done is just fascinating for a tech junkie like me. If you guys know something like this when it comes to "intelligence" please let me know, I hate brainless fights. 12 episodes seems very little for this kind of show though, hopefully it's a split cour or something like that.

Yeah right like I believe that this is going to be Urobuchi's first light hearted series.

Don't let him fool you!

I know exactly what's about to happen.

The war will come to Earth and that's where the series will get darker like all the other shows by Urobuchi...

I think the same.

I kinda think the same. I was thinking more along of the lines that his team mates find him and start killing everyone cause they see everyone as a threat. Since he did send a rescue signal.

Loved the ending on how everyone was surprised that he just started killing everyone.

Several boatloads of their friends had just gotten blasted by the pirates, they were sending out battleships to fight the pirates, so I doubt that they were disappointed that he killed the pirates for them.

But don't forget that up until then they were seriously discussing killing Ledo and doing an autopsy on the robot, they just had the sudden realization that all of them were that close to being killed. Also don't forget that they didn't believe that the robot could fly, that their concept of space was that a boat could sail there in a day; technologically speaking they just discovered that far from being equals they are actually like flies compared to a god.

Yeah, basically there was another Ice Age at some point in Earth's history, and most if not all, humanity ventured out into space to find new homes. They couldn't find a suitable planet like Earth in the galaxy and instead created Avalon, their own version of utopia, basically. When Red ends up on Earth, the ice melted, sea levels rose, and it's now Waterworld. That sounds about right...right?

I would ask you, in the future, to NOT say exactly the same back as I already said in the post you are responding to. And if you really have to repeat it for an believably necessary reason, to at least say: "As you said;..." and then say it. At least then I'll know you've not skipped, ignored, being sarcastic or try to act as if it's something new you came up with yourself.

Since I believe in reciprocity, you may ask something of me too, of my writings (in the same order of magnitude, obviously). I think if we both pay a little more attention to certain details in our writings, a lot less instances of miscommunication will follow.

I let myself some cool-off time and I am now back to check this thread and as expected you wrote long post which says more about you than what I did. Anything instead of writing another long riposte (because my point will be the same that you seem so singularly fail to "phantom" - that I repeat what you said to illustrate what you did not say and only finally said in your last post, and if you found my repeating your post annoying why not think about how annoying you are in repeatedly not paying attention to my questions???), so let me state the following:

- You and I are similar in some aspects. Both of us like to write long posts and favor debates. Both of us can be stubborn and take a lot of effort to be convinced, and sometimes it can get annoying (yeah, you should admit it too).

- You said I repeated details in your post, and that I did not read your post closely, and yet I said you missed details in my questions and you did not read my post closely. Another similarity.

- You misunderstood and got pissed when I used humor in my post and then when you used humor I misunderstood and got pissed. Another similarity.

- I could not understand why you use some terms and word definition as you did and perhaps so do you. Or perhaps our definitions are just different. This has got us into some futile debates about the actual topic.

So I fully agree that if we respond to each other, it is better to pay closer attention to things we wrote and made sure the other side understand the things that we want the other side to respond. Also for humor, I would suggest we stop using humor in our reply to each other, particularly the ironic type or subtle ones that can be easy to cause misunderstanding.

What do you say?

LOL! I meant 'fathom'...must have missed it even when re-reading. ;-)

Yes, I noticed you remained silent for a while. But it was good thinking, sometimes I do the same. And time can make one 'reflective' a bit, and I'm over it too.

And I say I agree. :-) Though...it's a bit pity we can't use humour anymore in our posts. I usually like humour. Maybe we should make it more obvious, that would be a first start.

Though, since I think we're both intelligent people, it's somehow surprising we wouldn't get subtle irony and such (at least, from eachother). So my theory is, that our ego's are in the way, in these cases. For instance, when I asked 'Do we know anyone that knows Japanese?" I thought it rather obvious that I meant you, because obviously, you know Japanese, and you knew I knew you know Japanese. But I didn't consider that you might feel like I was dismissing your knowledge of Japanese. That didn't even occur to me, since it wouldn't be very logical to do so. Sorry about that.

Anyway, let's start afresh and try to put some more thought (in regard to emphatically considering possible offence) in our posts! Hopefully, the next episode-discussion will go smoothly! :-)

I think the issue stems from your asking someone who knows Japanese to check Japanese websites for the translation of the MC's name. To me it seems you deliberately ignored and mistrusted my Japanese ability and so tried to find someone who can double-check on what I said. So when you asked the same question when you talked about Gen I got pretty worked up. Also, despite you saying you do not care about the translation, you seemed to keep looking for some proof that your preferred translation is right and my view is not to be trusted (hence asking for someone who speaks Japanese, talking about asking the creators even Gen). That's it. As you said, let bygones be bygones.

No, no, it wasn't anything like that. As I said, I thought you made a good case for 'Ledo', only, try it to see it my way: while you and some sites use 'Ledo', others (who also know Japanese) and a lot of other sites use 'Red'. If I have to remain objective about it, I just can't say one or the other party is most correct, and I don't know enough of Japanese to form my own opinion of it. From a standpoint of neutrality, this is understandable, I think.

That's the only reason I talked about someone needed to check out the main site if something is said about it, or to contact Gen by email or twitter - and you didn't actually say you already had done any of those things in the conversation with me. The reason being, because we can all agree that, whatever our own interpretation of the translation should be, if it's official or the creator says it's 'Red' or 'Ledo' in English, then it IS 'Red' or 'Ledo', whatever reasons one may say or think is most suited. And obviously, we needed someone knowledgeable in Japanese to do such a thing, but I thought it to be a bit too non-roundabout asking directly, so I tried to hint at it with some humour, so it wouldn't feel too much like social pressure, and I wanted to keep it light-hearted. (Seen afterwards, that didn't pan out too well ;-) )

Yeah, let's do that. :-)

I'm already pumped up. :-) As you said, in the preview there are a lot more pirates, and some cute slaves (Pirates don't seem to be too bad a life, if you're at the top ;-) ) Though I hope they'll go into the cultural differences too, since that is one of the strong points of the series. I know some think those are boring, and are mainly interested in battlefests, but I think the 'talking' scenes give insight in their respective cultures as well as themselves as characters. And it gives more info about the history and world they're living it: I love these kind of things (which is why I also loved Shinsekai yori). Even without much words; the fish-scene/underwater organism corpse, for instance, and the little dance of excitement of Amy when she sees it's the machine talking and his puzzled look about that: priceless.

People only watching the show for the battles are better of watching a typical shounen, I think. I have the strong impression battles in this anime is a means to an end, and not an end on itself. Sure, it spices things up, but it isn't really an anime focussed on battle.

I think this is where the feeling of the mistrust I got came from, because from my long experience of studying Japanese language and in particular how names are translated between English and Japanese, I have full confidence that the katakana REDO would be translated as LEDO (or REDO) and only katakana REDDO would become RED (or LED). Your repeated stress that this or that could mean RED is as correct as LEDO annoyed me (you even said REDO and REDDO sounded similar which seems to question why I would bother writing the two differently, and this is such a basic thing in Japanese language that your asking it seems to reveal a deep-seated mistrust of what I tried to say in terms of translation).

Anyway, I generally agree with all the other things you said, so I would just leave it here.

I do not think battle is the main theme here. And I fully believe what Gen and the director said in interview, that it is a positive and optimistic work that aims to bring a solid message to the youngster generation in Japan who are having hard time landing a job and are struggling to get assimilated into the broad society. I do hope Gen can break out of the box, comfortable maybe to him, that he built himself (and got famous doing so) in terms of grimdark writing. I surely believe that they are not trolling us this time round.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

If I have to remain objective about it, I just can't say one or the other party is most correct, and I don't know enough of Japanese to form my own opinion of it. From a standpoint of neutrality, this is understandable, I think.

To be exact, I said this: "I'm also not sure about your argument about red being reddo. Doesn't that seem awfully similar as 'redo'? Or do you mean it sounds completely different in Japanese as we hear in the anime? Because otherwise, it would actually makes sense to translate it with the English word 'red', would it not?"

You interpreted that too negatively. I'm nowhere stressing or claiming they sounded similar, in fact I'm asking if they sound similar or not; it's an open question, not a an implied assertion. I purely meant they seem awfully similar as written (only a D added, and in my language, for instance, there are instances where you simply can't hear directly if there is one D or a double D in a word, though one can sometimes deduce it since the sound of the vowel preceding it changes). Which led me to assume you must have a reason to be sure it wasn't reddo, and this would probably be the fact it can be readily heard in Japanese, which is why I asked (as said, I personally know very little Japanese).

As for the other arguments; I mainly used the arguments of others on that matter. This for the reason to provide some contrasting viewpoints and see how you respond and counterargument those. Let's not forget Alduren knows Japanese too, and he translated as 'Red', the girl I talked about and whom is quite fluent in Japanese didn't see anything intrinsically wrong with 'Red' neither, and even on this forum there is a complete thread about what the real name should be, with varying arguments for Red as well as Ledo.... and most sites I visited have had it translated as Red too.

So..I mean, it's NOT that I said you talked crap (on the contrary, I always said you made good points), but viewed from a neutral, objective stance I just can't say "You are right and all the rest is wrong" purely because you said so. I hope you understand this. And that's why I thought maybe that, if we got something official (as in; a direct translation of it in English, from the main website or from Gen himself) we could settle this in a more definitive way.

Now, I understand you want to leave it at this, and I agree, since it's mostly off-topic in a way, but I just thought that I should clear this up completely. I'm NOT implying that you don't know Japanese well, or anything of the sort. At the start I did think Red was the best, for the simple reason that most sites I visited until that point, and most Japanese-knowledgeable people I had read or heard the opinion of up to then, used 'Red'. But then I saw crunchyroll dropped their use of Red (that they used at the preview) in favour of 'Ledo', so I actually thought that strengthened your case, and I thought it only fair to mention this to you too. And then you repeated that, which really ticked me off, as you saw. ;-) It's just that, for someone not knowing Japanese (= myself), and seen there are conflicting translations and arguments for it, it seemed reasonable to propose another way of settling this matter.

Well, I hope I cleared out any possible remaining misunderstandings now, and we can consider this whole thing a closed matter.

Well... I agree a change of style can be good, but I hope he doesn't overcompensate and swings too much in the other direction. I mean, there is nothing wrong with his sometimes dark-ish mood, in fact, I love that touch in an anime; it gives it some added realism, I think. So I agree with you that he/they are probably not trolling us, but on the other hand, I'm hoping he doesn't make it too cheerful and light-hearted neither. In any case; the 'accepted into broad society' seems a job ideally suited to go for by Ledo, that's for sure! ;-)

But Gen seems to know what he's doing; he has quality and style. So, positive message or not, I think he'll make an interesting read/watch, with some 'raw' elements here and there too. In fact, more a problem than the underlying goal or message diverting from usual, is the fact that it's only 12 episodes. Seen the setting of the anime, with the relatively slow pace of discovering a new society/culture, and possible plot-twists in regard to Avalons' history towards earth, and possibly even the Hideauze...it seems rather short. I hope it is well received, so it might get another 12 or 26 episodes, to explore all possibilities the anime hints at.

As an aside: I read that Ledo is 16 years old - but that would be his physical age as we consider it, I guess? Seen the fact he can hybernate for months on end, and presuming he ages far less during those times, it wouldn't be illogical to assume his real age, technically speaking, may be far more; maybe even in his 20'ies.

You love to write lengthily... Well, I got what you wanted to say, but as I looked back at those old posts, I could still sense the negativity and skepticism that seems to lurking in your various posts. You said I am interpreting it too negatively, but the thing is after knowing what you told me I still got the same belittled and mistrusted feeling when I read your old posts. I guess we are again similar here - I remember no matter how many times I explained and explained and explained, you still think I was mocking you in the Shinsekai Yori post. At the end I think it just goes back to what I said earlier - let's try to reply to each other more carefully, make sure each of us is addressing what the other side wants to address, and tries not to use humor which may cause misunderstanding.

This is something that I wish you would have stated so in your reply earlier. As for the thread, most of those posted there do not speak Japanese anyway, and I already posted there that Ledo is a better translation (from a translation point of view not "feel better in English" point of view, which seems to be the position alduren took).

As for Gen, now I read that he is talking about writing stories for kids. Now this may be some real trolling there...

As an aside: I read that Ledo is 16 years old - but that would be his physical age as we consider it, I guess? For me, if we assume that he was born as fully grown and has been in war for the whole of his life, and combined this with the fact that Chamber said he has been working for a bit more than 16 years, I would take that his physical age is 16 years. And for working I assume that any resting time (including any hibernation for any warping travel etc) is also counted. So I won't think that his actual age is much more than that. Add the half year he spent hibernating deep in ocean, he would be around 17 by now, the most common age for a protagonist in anime and manga.

True. :-) It needed a considerable amount of conscious effort in convincing myself you didn't mean it mockingly. The same thing with your last repetition; it's very difficult to NOT see it negatively. But I think that now that we know, we can pay extra attention to it. I guess I'm being a bit too sensitive about repetitions of what I said that seem to ignore or mock me or my posts, while you seem a bit oversensitive in regard to everything that you construe as criticism on your knowledge of Japanese (I remember you had a fit with Alduren about that too, believe?). We both feel pretty 'attacked' by those kind of respective things, I think.

Ah well, we're only human. I still prefer a sensible - and, indeed, lengthy ;-) - debate above nonsensical oneliners like some. And even those oneliners can evoke hefty debates or flamewars even, at that.

Anyway; what about the last part (more on-topic) of my post? Any comments/insights?

Edit: ah, nm, I see you've edited your post.

Edit2:

Yes, I've read that theory before, about being fully grown. But are there any strong indications that this is the way it happens? Seems more like cloning to me, and while this wouldn't be exceptional in an SF, if we take that they want to try to remain somewhat realistic, one still has to explain how he developed a personality, then.

I mean, I'm assuming - correct me if I'm wrong - you mean that such a 'grownup'-birth happens much faster than usual (if not, then he would have been in an incubator the last 16 years, and only very recently be put on the battlestage, which seems unlikely.) So if it happens, say, in a month from baby to pre-adult, it's difficult to see how he would have a fully developed personality already - since cloning doesn't involve transplanting memories.

I agree with you ofcourse that a common trope and typical thing of anime in this genre is having a main character of 14-17 years old (sometimes a bit less, like with Magi, sometimes a bit more, but most are indeed 16-17). For all ends and purposes, however, he would indeed be 16. I was merely talking about his possible technical age. (Aka, his age seen from his 'birthday'. Since one can not gain experience or anything during hibernation, and presumably your metabolism is starkly reduced, one could say he is, mentally, still 16-17.

That said, if you are right and he actually has been with chamber for his full 16 years, one could also claim he's younger than 16, physically. For the same reasons: all those times he's been hibernating, his metabolism slows down, so his body regresses far less rapidly than a normal person would do. Getting older is also a physiological process, after all, and so continued periods of hibernation and slowing this down would have a cumulative effect, and his physical 'body' age would be far less than of someone who didn't hibernate during that period.

Yeah, replying a long post I sometimes post part of the reply first and then add the remaining part later. It would be fine if the topics are quite different like in this case, but I guess it can get messy if it is about the same topic (as in SSY's case).

Or what we think/interpret as being haughty, distrusting (or mocking or sarcastic). ;-)

Re-reading your posts afterwards, I see, indeed, that you focussed on what sites I meant, but by then you had already pissed me off with your repetition, and all consequent demands and explanations in this regard I then construed as a cheap way of explaining why you had repeated what I told you, basically finding it a weak excuse and irrelevant to what ticked me off. (aka, I felt that you were sidestepping the issue) I think if that hadn't happened, and you simply had asked: "But what sites are you talking about, could you name a few?" we wouldn't have had that whole off-topic discussion, and I would have given you the names of those sites much sooner. Same with me, of course, I should have made it more clear I meant you, when I was talking about a person who knows Japanese. I can see how, if one is already pretty negative and think I'm doubting your prowess of Japanese, one might completely bypass/glance over the irony used there.

I guess this is what one could call a snowball-effect: the errors, misunderstandings and mistrust accumulate consecutively with each post, and at the end it becomes an avalanche. And after a while, it's very difficult to go back and try to read everything with an open, neutral mindset again.

It occurs to me, that you are right; on many, many instances we are much alike. Maybe that's just the problem. ;-p

My thinking is that they are grown in some kind of incubator which may or may not be clones (clone is easier I guess, but of course it can also be some fertilized eggs, hard to say) and we don't know how long it takes for the incubation, but their age is counted from the moment they leave the incubator, fully grown and ready for war. As for personality and memory I guess in sci-fi there is always some kind of "explanation" that takes care of that, so I am not too concerned there.

Yeah, his "body age" can be less, though if we go by the counting method by Chamber (and probably the military too) his age would be the number of days he has spent since he was "born" and if we follow that standard he would be 16-17 years old.

i love Urobuchi Gen
these is one writer that don't take the easy rote

others writers will make both of them talk Japaneses in convenient way "oh my god you talk Japaneses to!!"
but not gen
there lots of other things like that here

and in the end of episode 2 WOW

other thing Urobuchi gen Good at and i can see it here more clearly is Imagine a stationing
for me at last that what i think will rely happen in these kind of stationing

all characters are good established so far even the one scene characters

that guy with blond hear and the captain was good even with they short time

hand down these is the best anime these season

It feels less like a standard mecha story, has a similar atmosphere, ocean setting, light hearted/healing, mecha, and pirates to Kenran Butou Sai: http://myanimelist.net/anime/1086/Kenran_Butou_Sai:_The_Mars_Daybreak
Though that's from the pov of the pirates.

If Urobochi does emphasize the ice age of employment for young people, will Red go flip fish burgers like Hataraku Mao?

Also, very nice OP & ED songs.

Interesting Episode!!!

The interaction was made between the two sides and it seems like that pirates tend to be a problem for the people living on the fleet and that flying glider is awesome reminding me of the Studio Ghibli's films that I watched which was brilliant.

Looking forward to see how this turns out in the next episode!!

Of course some will claim their ship is the BATTLESHIP but they all do. This is why battles occur because of factions fighting each other to justify their favourite ship.
And thus SHIP to SHIP combat occurs almost anytime even now.
Beware, Threading into the Shipping battlefield will be bloody.... What are you waiting for?
