Gundam 00 made a good start, compared to Code Geass R2 (3.0% for the episode 1). It showed the size of the Gundam fandom. Yozakura Quartet also had a surprisingly high rating.

Anpanman ranked 26th and the rating was 2.4%.

The TV rating only shows one aspect of anime's popularity. Here is the comparison of the TV rating and the DVD sales of Noitamina anime. (*,*** indicates the sales were unmeasurably small.)

3.04% 11,039 Honey & Clover
3.19% *,*** Paradise Kiss
3.20% *,*** Ayakashi
4.33% *2,140 Ayakashi -Bakeneko-
3.50% *6,378 Juuousei
3.25% *6,110 Honey & Clover II
4.01% *,*** Hataraki Man
4.44% *8,788 Nodame Cantabile
3.48% 12,515 Mononoke
4.56% *8,492 Moyashimon
4.80% *4,911 Hakaba Kitaro
4.35% 10,260 Toshokan Sensou

cf.
1.79% 23,961 CLANNAD

2channel TV rating & DVD sales threads have been collecting information since 2003. We divide the works and collect info from TV company customer centers, anime producers' blogs, magazines and newspapers. Sometimes the employees of the TV rating research company leak the info they have. The validity of the information is regularly checked by the paper media. I'm updating the TV rating info in my blog. If you wanna have the latest temporal data, visit here. As for the DVD sales data, consult this database.

I don't think the Japanese Otaku culture really has that much of an effect on the T.V. ratings. I mean, do you really think all the people who watch Sazae-san, Keroro Gunso, and Pokemon are Otaku?

No, people who watch Sazae-san probably include a lot of older people who don't really watch anime but, have watched Sazae-san maybe their whole lives, and keep watching it. A lot of the other shows are like that, or are massively popular kids shows.

Seems like people are always so surprised when they see these rankings every week and expect to see a bunch of shows that are popular over the internet, like on this site. I think those people are just overestimating the Japanese otaku culture a little bit. At least when it comes to something like T.V ratings, things like DVD sales are another thing entirely.

Indeed.

"Otaku" don't watch much of anything truly popular at all. You'll be lucky to see shows truly embraced by people who would be considered otaku break into the top ten (it does happen, but it's almost always in the bottom spots).

Some people here seem to have some weird idea about how widespread "otaku culture" is in Japan. They are a small fringe group of socially awkward nerds, just like they are in this country. They just happen to be closer to the original source and thus more directly marketed to by anime producers themselves.

37, 1.5% N/A Toradora! (NEW) N
27, 2.4% N/A CLANNAD After Story (NEW) N

The first episode of Nodame was aired on Oct 9th, so not included in this ranking.
Toaru Majutsu no Index and Chaos Head are not aired on the major TV channels (only available on local and satellite channels).
Living in Japan doesn't mean you can watch all the anime. There is a differential of the number of anime aired city by city.

It's a bit irrelevant to post this here, but Minori (the game company of "ef") made an announcement to the fans.
Minori said:

The online streaming of ef started on the official site (http://www.ef-melo.com/streaming.html) and Animate TV (http://www.animate.tv/).
We sincerely beg the fans who are watching ef - a tale of melodies - online to watch the legal stream videos not the illegal materials. Please understand that only the statistics based on the legal materials are effective in the business negotiations.

Ah, I see. I wasn't actually referring to the top 10 shows, I know that there aren't 25 million otaku who watch Sazae-san. I was mostly referring to the fact that i.e. Yozakura Quartet was way higher Clannad After Story. Also, Golgo 13?

But it seems that these shows are mostly watched by the general public anyway and the otaku just download/buy DVDs or most likely, aren't included in the ratings.

Does the general public buy any DVDs or is that where the otaku tastes are revealed?

Edit: Spelling.

CLANNAD AS was aired immediately after Yozakura.
Yozakura 1:30 am - 2:00 am
CLANNAD AS 2:00 am - 2:30 am
I think Yozakura got a higher rating than CLANNAD simply because it was aired earlier.
cf.
Nodame 0:45 am - 1:15 am
Hyakko 2:30 am - 3:00 am

There is an interesting case suitable to look into this issue. It's the DVD sales of NANA.
NANA manga is popular among non-Otaku female fans. To appeal to these fans, who rarely purchase anime DVD, the price of NANA anime DVD volume 1 was set as 707 yen. The rest of the volumes were priced 3990 yen. Here is the outcome.

NANA
volume/ first week/ two weeks total/ three weeks total
vol.01 27,325 43,045 50,235 (seven weeks total 60,070)
vol.02 *6,655 *9,153 10,226
vol.03 *5,595 *7,271 *8,165
vol.04 *4,519 *6,034
vol.05 *3,961 *5,585
vol.06 *3,463
vol.07 *3,710
SP 7.8 *3,480 *5,296
vol.08 *3,399
vol.09 *3,259
vol.10 *2,924
vol.11 *2,492
vol.12 *2,516
vol.13 *2,119
vol.14 *1,919
vol.15 *1,909
vol.16 *1,843
vol.17 *1,803

97% of those who purchased the volume one had dropped out until when the last volume was released. 3,990 yen for three episode DVD was pretty cheap compared to normal anime DVD (eg. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 6,930 yen for two episode DVD), but keeping on purchasing DVD and completing the whole series was not an easy job for non-Otaku people.

Why the hell don't some producers try selling cheap DVDs? It doesn't take a mathematician to see that 60,000x700~10,000x4,000 and that 60,000x700>>2,000x4,000.

Considering the cost of DVD disc, packaging, shipping, and the share of the retailers, 707 yen is almost equal to the cost. I think no matter how many copies of the volume 1 were sold, they get little profit out of it.
