I don't understand it either, it's not like this season is full of fujoshi anime, K has no competition aside from Kintama and less relevant Magi, they could've easily released it normally. Maybe they were scared of competing with Psycho-Pass? Another insteresting thing is BD/DVD ratio - maybe female fans finally invested in BD players after Fate/Zero? |

If we added both the sales of vol 1 and 2 together that would probably be the amount if just vol 1 came out. I don't think this is the case. What phenomenon would explain such buying behavior? If someone didn't have the money to buy two volumes at once (unlikely for BD-buying otaku, especially since K is relatively cheap compared to other anime) wouldn't they buy Vol. 1 now and get Vol. 2 later? Or do you mean you think they've just given up buying the show entirely because of this? I don't know if that's the case either, certainly not for ~30% of sales. Personally I think that some people just brought vol1 while others just brought vol 2; that divided the sales for K. I also think think that K would of sold more if they released the BD/DVDs at a later time instead of two volumes a month after the anime started. Also one volume at a time. |

In other news GalPan is still no.1 on amazon for a couple of hours now. The other volumes are also slowly climbing. I can't believe its topping Gundam in the ranks. Its freaking Gundam Unicorn (and TaiBan to an extent) we are talking about here. |

Glad to see Tari Tari continues to sell welll. Wish that meant a second season or OVA but with an original story I'm not sure. Perhaps a movie like Hanasaku Iroha, who knows... Would be interesting if Girlz Und Panzer did that well. It is fun but I'm not sure how re-watchable it will be, personally. The episode six delay is annoying but it shows that, strangely, I care and am really looking forward to it. |

jmal said: GrilPan vol.1 has been at #5 on Amazon for most of today, beating Gundam UC vol.6 and so is no.1 for all anime BD/DVD. All the other 5 volumes are now above Chuunibyou vol.1On an unrelated note, the production delays clearly didn't hurt GirlPan Vol. 1's rankings. It's up at #8 on Amazon now (temporarily ahead of the recently solicited SAO Vol. 7). The astonishing rise is perhaps due to the message from the official twitter yesterday calling fans to place orders soon "if they want to receive their BD/DVD in time". The recent "summary special ep.5.5" did not cause the BD/DVD rank to go down, as a week without new material usually means, but in fact helped sustain the ranking as the episode is deemed interesting with some new information which can even helps new watchers to familiarize with the show. The announcement that this ep.5.5 will be included in vol.3 (plus the OVA already planned in that volume) also helps. |
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Hopefully someone will sub Ep 5.5 if its actually worth watching then. I also can't help but think those 12 minute OVAs bundled with each volume is helping it sell as well. I hope that might become a more standard thing. |

Currently GirlPan is dominating the ranking in Toranoana at no.1 and 5,5,5,5,5 http://www.toranoana.jp/mailorder/mdv/ranking/2012/20121109.html Fans who went to Gamers reported that all GirlPan volumes are now in top 5 positions. RyanSaotome said: What is your basis for thinking that? Mostly just gut! Unfortunately there's no great way to quantitatively predict these things, since Amazon is the only extremely detailed source we have. However I will note that it's not charting highly (or at all in most cases) in the November rankings at Rakuten, HMV, Animate, or Gamers. Vol. 1 is currently #9 at Softmap but that's it. So there's a potential mismatch between Amazon and other retailers, which is the definition of a Stalker over- or underestimation. (Caveat: Softmap, Gamers and Animate only report their top 10) Meanwhile, Chuunibyou has a straight #1-7 sweep on HMV's November chart, while Little Busters! has all 9 of its volumes in the top 10 at Gamers and 5 of the top 10 at Softmap. I think it all depends on how the rest of the series go, if it is as good as the last few episodes and the sakuga / animation quality does not drop, then it can indeed reach the predicted number by the Stalker, namely >15000. Failing that I think it is likely that it can still go beyond 10000. |

It is fun but I'm not sure how re-watchable it will be, personally. Actually the ryokan-restaurant that the Matilda tank crashed into in ep.4 reported sharp increase of access to their website and there were fans who booked the ryokan for stay mentioning they came because of GnP. In fact the anime now got the endorsement from the Ibaraki Prefecture Government (where Ooarai is located) and the anime is now on the top page of the government website: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=517525#msg18293511 |

Wasn't GaruPan predicted to be a 3.5k average seller before Fall season started? Would definitely be amazing sales compared to that. |

Seems like moe is in and fanservice is out or gobs of unnecessary flashes and squeezes anyways. I thought the uncensored ecchi stuff would be selling better but apparently not. Girlz Und Panzer seems to be the right cute moe, action and characters mix. I totally missed the real world attraction tie ins, come visit the kissaten they wrecked last week! |

It depends more on just whats good, not just genres. To Love Ru Darkness is a big time fanservice show and its projected to sell around 10k copies. Only things that don't really sell are aimed at a more mainstream or casual market, since they aren't willing to pay the prices for anime. |

jmal said: The successful shows this season are a mix of three different styles of shounen manga, a visual novel drama, an anime original military-style story, a light novel romantic comedy, and one extremely fanservice-heavy manga adaptation. It's kinda all over the place, whether in story themes, visual styles, amount of fanservice, or a variety of other measures. Outside of JoJo, these are all focused on cute girls. Not that theres a problem with it in my opinion, but people are generally right that stuff with cute girls will sell better than stuff without (and the stuff without that DOES sell often has hot guys so its really no different). Having attractive characters is pretty much a necessity to sell, though there will be a few random instances of it not mattering like JoJo. |

If I see any genre that is really under-represented it'd have to be Psychological Seinen. When there's neither much action nor a girls/romance/slice-of-life setting. Something like Monster. The last thing I remember to vaguely fit into that genre is Saraiya Goyou, and I don't think that was particularly successful either. And it's from 2010. Then again I guess it's just not a genre that ever gets animated much, because there are a bunch of manga in that genre that sell fairly well and have been going for a while, so at some level there has to be an audience for those titles. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

Higashi_no_Kaze said: The fact is the range of genres is more limited in anime than manga. A lot of material or story or character design seem to be considered as not so easily to be made popular in anime, and seinen/jousei is one that get particularly less attention when anime staff look for source to adapt. Popular manga liks Kachou Kousaku Shima would get real-life drama adaptation, Kami no Shizuku (credited for starting a spatacular wine boom in Japan) got real-life drama adaptation; Gantz got real-life movie adaptation. Umizaru has real-life TV drama and movies. None of it has anime (well, Kousaku Shima has short flash anime but that's mainly for marketing on web). Kaiji got anime but its real-life movies is a much much bigger hit. For Naoki Urasawa's works, Yawara may have anime but 20th Century Boys got a trilogy of real-life movies which were big hits (but no anime). If I see any genre that is really under-represented it'd have to be Psychological Seinen. When there's neither much action nor a girls/romance/slice-of-life setting. Something like Monster. My observation is that those manga that are based more on real-life people and the current society has a tendency to be made in real-life TV drama or movies instead of anime. Perhaps the consideration is that with a setting in current society no expensive special effect or stage set is needed (but popular manga like Jin got made into real-life TV drama, a very popular one, even though most of it was set in the pre-Meiji-Restoration Makumatsu period) while it can be shown in mainstream hours (if it is TV) or more theaters (if it is movie) and pull in mainstream audience thus reaching a lot more people. This consideration can also apply to shoujo, so although shoujo like Nana and Hana Yori Danshi have both anime and real-life movie/TV-drama, it is the real-life movie/TV-drama that people remember. |

IMO the main reason those kinds of manga get Live Action adaptions is because there is a negative stigma with anime in the mainstream. People view anime fans as nerds or otaku, so if you want a popular mainstream manga to do well, its best to adapt it to Live Action which doesn't have any stigmas. The kind of people who like these kinds of manga typically don't want to be connected to otaku, so they wouldn't be buying the anime versions, as seen by something like Kaiji. |

RyanSaotome said: Stigma is there, yes, although it is indeed much better now as we now actually see more and more celebrities declaring on TV or blog/twitter that they are anime fans or even otakus. It is something that is absolutely unimaginable, say, 20 years ago. So it is getting easier but there are still a lot of grown-ups who do not really enjoy watching anime, and this is one reason why I call anime a Niche Market. Manga, on the other hand, is still read by lots of adults (and for seinen/josei you should be adults to read it) and it makes a lot more business sense for popular seinen manga to be made Live Action because a much bigger size of people can be reached (particularly if famous actors/actresses are in the TV/movie). Those mainstream audience do not necessarily view anime as stigma like anime-watcher must be otaku (the view is more like anime is only for younger people) - it is just that they are not that interested in anime anyway.IMO the main reason those kinds of manga get Live Action adaptions is because there is a negative stigma with anime in the mainstream. |
