SAO was slightly misleading since the first episode centered on all the levels, but the majority of the series so far has been side stories and fillers. Yes I remember watching the movie festival episode first and I was like wait what is going on. I actually stopped in the middle and went on to the next episode For Shiki - lol I also thought that then I was like uhh wtf, after that I didn't really care because she was kind of annoying anyway Until she truely died, then I felt sorry for her |

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien After watching the first episode I thought it was the classic anime about school and romance but then everything changes. School Days Well, I think everybody knows. Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku After watching the first episode I never thought that the series could become so dark. EDIT: Puella Magi Madoka Magica |

I'd recommend for anyone to watch SAO in this order: Episode 1, 2, 8 > Rest of the series when it finishes airing > 3 - 7 and you won't be as pissed off and disappointed. Episode 8 actually isn't all that bad, but it's impossible to tell if it'll branch off from either great to shit from here. At least we're finally done with the shitty side stories. Madoka Magica definitely has one of the most misleading first episodes ever. |

What was so misleading about Madoka's first episode? And Haruhi has a weird first episode, but it's not really messing around with the rest of the show. Kind of like Texhnolyze has a first episode where there is hardly any dialogue at all, but is it misleading? Even Gungrave does tie in to the first episode after the first half. All in all, I don't think there is such a thing as misleading first episode. Just people with strong prejudices. |

SAO's first episode was amazing, but totally misleading. I hope they get done with the harem atmosphere and hurry up and ge the the fighting. Episode 8 was pretty good, except for that fanservice bit, but whatever. Madoka Magica was kinda misleading. more like the name was misleading. First half of Jinrui's first episode was misleading. At first, it was really boring, but then the bread scene happened. XD Now nothing makes sense, but it's all fun! XD lol |

All in all, I don't think there is such a thing as misleading first episode. Just people with strong prejudices. There are definitely anime out there that want to surprise their audience so they intentionally go for the misleading first episode to set up a surprise later. It's not like it's a bad thing when the first episode is misleading. A show like Higurashi wants to throw you off with it's cute moe slice of life antics so it's more shocking when it hits you with it's sudden change of tone. Not that that first episode is misleading with the way it begins it's just an example that a little misdirection can be a good thing. Watching the first episode of Madoka and not knowing anything about it you'd be looking for a pretty typical magic girl anime which is what they want you to think because they hit you with a very dark surprise. What Gungrave did was kind of jarring and misleading but at least it lets you know to expect that the last third of the series is going to be pretty bad. Which is a shame because episodes 2-18 is almost a perfect gangster story. SAO tricked me with it's first episode. I thought there would actually be a plot rather than a bunch of disconnected stories. I've heard a plot is supposed to kick in at some point but for now I have to agree with the posts about the poorly placed fanservice. Ass shots are one thing but an ass shot during what is supposed to be a serious conversation is not clever or smartly placed instead it just takes you out of the moment which is what a lot of the fanservice in the show does. It ruins the mood. I don't even care about the action, I just want a little coherent story telling rather than a bunch of episodes that introduce random characters and drop you into the middle of a plot so that it's impossible to care about what is happening. |

I really liked that episode (think I even rated it '8' at the time), but everything after that.............my God. *repressed memories* Now and Then, Here and There - I knew it was supposed to get worse, hence why I picked it up, but I didn't know it'd be that bad. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - I had no idea how Urobuchi was, so (like Mami) I had it coming... Shadow Star - I knew very well who Mohiro Kitoh was, but I underestimated him... Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu - My first ep was the movie festival one, so I was a little confused. School Days - More like the first half of the series is misleading. |

I didn't find madoka misleading at all; the art, how serious characters took things, and foreshadowing all made things pretty obvious. Episode 3 to me was entirely expected :/ Pani Poni Dash and Lucky Star were a bit misleading for me, since the former was a bit obnoxious I wanted to drop it and the latter wasting my time talking about food. School days I couldn't stand the characters right away. I initially dropped it, but then read a review and dissociated myself from said characters and watched it. Haruhi's movie episode to me was the best episode in the series. The rest of the series was slightly disappointing. Nichijou I loved right away. Higashi no eden was hugely disappointing. Stein's gate was simply disappoiting. |

Haruhi - from the convo it seems like the first episode was misplaced? nevertheless i thought the first episode was super fun and intriguing. i lost my admiration quickly. no offense to all the fans. i like SAO a lot. There might be some silliness and a pair of painfully tight pants, but its the best new anime i've seen lately. I actually want to watch it, instead of feeling like i have to. |

If you didn't know anything about the Madoka franchise beforehand, I'd say that the first episode of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica would prove to be very misleading compared to the rest of the series! Especially the opening. In addition, for the first 2 episodes a "happier" ED was also used. But if you knew about the dark side the series would turn, or knew anything prior to viewing, the first episode may not have been so misleading. Unfortunately, I was already aware of the dark elements (in vague detail, if on some level that makes sense...) upon my first viewing. I would have liked to have been surprised by the dark twists. Oh, and on an odd note...I've watched this series, then re-watched it once. I think I am going to watch it a third time soon, but this time backwards. I think it will be interesting...... |

Chaos Head.. Gungrave.. (all I can think of) I guess SAO.. but not really for me because I've read the manga's so it didn't bother me. I suggest to the people that watch SAO to read the manga first.. sadly it's one of those anime's you would need to read the manga/LN to understand completely. |

Shadow Star Narutaru I wasn't actually surprised by the first 2/3 of the series, I had been warned about it beforehand and thought "Another series where people over-reacted, sure it got darker but it isn't that dark." Then I saw the last 3 episodes, I mean really, they went all out. Though its impressive how the series has no blood or on-screen graphic content yet manages to show a girl getting raped by a monster's claw after the beast killed her brother, with whom she was in bed before the event, when she was coming back from gang raping the girl controlling the revenge bent monster. Now and Then, Here and There I knew it was going to be dark. But the first half is misleading, it makes you believe they're going all out and exploring the depravity of war and child soldiers with realism, the last third of the series is a total out-of-character crapfest done purely to support the overly cheesy-happy ending with no regards to what the title achieved during the first half of the series. Though I have to admit, the annoying shonen lead in a realistic post-apocalptic war story should have been a hint. The first half is about war, child soldiers, the impact of war on civilians, a realistic picture of how people going through this can be scared and have to struggle just to keep their sanity and basic human decency... The second half is a shonen story. While I like shonen, the two genres just don't mix here. |

Narutaru. The first episode, and especially the OP, are misleading to the nth extent. You watch the first episode, and it would appear this will be a sweet little anime aobut a girl and her cute little star creature she finds. The OP is more or less a happy animated crayon drawing of all the kids in the show and their weird monsters, with this mega happy, nice-nice theme. It is probably one of the darker, more disturbing shows I've watched. It's the anime equivalent of someone offering you candy, then raping you in a van in the alley. :D |

Ga-Rei: Zero -- think you all know why. Actually its a misleading first two eps though aha. Chaos; Head -- Actually this had a misleading 5-6 episodes. Made me actually think it was gonna be a psychological thriller/horror, and it turned to be some crap sci-fi crap. Worst way to derail a series ever. |
