I wonder if they call it anime? If so do they get into the same silly arguments Sub v. Dub like we do you know something like" The voice actors for Avatar are horrid I prefer the original American Voice actors because it sounds more natural." "But you don't even understand English how would you know you're just reading subtitles." I'm just curious.

American cartoons air on Japanese Disney and Cartoon Network channels, though they're not really popular. Avatar did not finish airing on Nick Japan due to low ratings, so no one would care about original or dubbed voices for that example. American television cartoons are not as big as anime is in America or the west. They only air in Japan because American networks buy Japanese channel space and air them themselves. In the west third party companies license shows and handle it all themselves.

It has been my experience, that most Japanese see anime the way most non Japanese see cartoons.

I don't like cartoons, it's crap for kids. It might shock most here, but that is the view Japanese have of anime.

Just because we spend so much effort on it, doesn't mean most people like the stuff.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Yes, they get them, but that's about all. Anime is way more popular here than American cartoons are there. Just turn on the TV and you'll see some anime-wannabe crap popping up. Meanwhile you don't have that problem in Japan with them trying to make an 'American cartoon'. And before someone mentions Panty and Stocking, that was an intentional parody. It wasn't played straight like all the anime-wannabe shows here do.

Statistically, I'm sure you could find at least one guy complaining about the opposite anime fans do, but it wont be in the same quantity or importance as anime is here. You don't see hundreds of 'cartoon conventions' in Japan like you see anime conventions here. Japan has no real need for US TV cartoons since they have anime to watch instead.

I guess if our anime is their cartoons, they wouldn't want or have the need to watch our cartoons anymore. Hah.

But I agree. To think that they would want the cartoons we exchange for theirs. Hilarious, haha!

If something like that exist it would be pretty cool to see them compared to normal weeaboo (this is the rare case were normal and weeaboo can be used together).

As I heard many years ago some Japanese politicians complained that some TV companies importing too many foreign cartoons especially American ones because too many anime made for adults and too little made for kids, especially educational ones. Most of anime for kids are plagued with too many product placement or simply glorified advertisements such as Beyblade and Yugioh for examples.

While technically not a Japanese channel to begin with, NHK-World only show educational anime for preschoolers, much like their own version of Sesame Street and such.

I know that they definitely get some at least because I have friends in Japan who like watching Family Guy and even Spongebob. Old Disney cartoons seem to be quite popular there as well, especially Mikey Mouse and such. In general, American cartoons and such don't seem to be viewed there as much as Japanese anime is here.

Also, my Japanese friends at least do indeed refer to American cartoons as anime.

For the most part, I think things are best in the original language be it English, Japanese, etc., but I did come across Japanese dubbed South Park on NicoNicoDouga once that was pretty hilarious.

I know nothing of the airing schedules and such, but I did at least I get what information I have from people who live in Japan.

There is a lot of anime made for children here. Whoever told you this was lying.

Here is some of the Japanese dubbed South Park that I mentioned:
http://nicoviewer.net/sm2938507

I couldn't find the full episodes that I was watching before (then again I didn't look very hard), but I'm sure people will find that quite amusing.

Also, a Japanese dubbed version of the theme song:

What criteria are you using to determine that it was popular, the fact that there was a Japanese audio track produced or the fact you found a youtube clip? Neither really comment about popularity as several companies like Nick, Disney, and Cartoon Network have paid to dub their shows into Japanese but very few gained any real popularity.

Over 100 episodes of it aired on TV Tokyo. A rare accomplishment even for anime, and most foreign cartoons never even make it to a major channel over there.

I've talked to 20+ Jap exchange students over 3 years period and all of them agreed that some foreign cartoons are decent, but almost all of them are pale in comparison to Japanese animation.

That's ultimate what it boils down to. "I saw a clip in Japanese, so clearly it was popular there". Ignoring the fact a lot of stuff gets dubbed there by CN/Nick/Disney themselves, but it doesn't mean anyone cares about it.

Even better if they say "I saw some Japanese fanart of this one time, it must be popular" It'd be like saying Maicching Machiko-sensei is popular in America because I've seen American fanart of it.

Then you might want to be clear that you're talking about the first series, not the OVA that you linked nor the current running of TMNT.

I was mostly just referring to TMNT as a whole franchise, but yeah, it definitely peaked with the original series. The 2003 reboot aired on TVT as well but it was kind of a flop.
