I'm looking for anime with good fight scenes. Specifically:
-intelligent fight scenes, in which the winner is decided as much or more based on cleverness and skill as on power
-well-animated fight scenes, in which you get to see all the moves, unlike many shows in which there's a flash when a blow is struck
-relatively short fight scenes, that do not generally take up a whole episode
-typically it helps if the characters have recognizeable limits - if they have guns they should have to worry about ammo, if it's a giant robot, fuel/battery power should sometime be an issue, etc.

I loved the fight scenes in Air Master. That show had its flaws, but the fight scenes were really fun and fluidly animated. Some of the ones in Cowboy Bebop were pretty cool as well. It's been awhile, but Patlabor had some strategic stuff going on as well if I recall, where they needed to consider their movements well to conserve fuel, and collateral damage was an issue. That said, I should watch the rest of Patlabor... heck, even Angelic Layer did it pretty well.

On the other hand, I hated the fight scenes in Dragon Ball Z, and the typical thing with fights involving swords, where the fighters pass each other and one falls down without really showing what happened, does not impress me. I'm not really looking for a long shounen series, either.

Oh. Another note. I do okay with raws, so don't hold back if it hasn't been subbed.

Code geass might fit the bill. But Code Geass is more about clever strategies between armies rather than 1 on 1 fights.

You gotta see Samurai Champloo. Its jaw-dropping, beautifully detailed action will awe you. Kenshin famous Trust and Betryal OVA and the movie, Stranger of Mukoh Hadan, had some amazing fight scene's.

Also Claymore, had several awesome straight-up sword action scene's that you might love.
Baccano is very similar to Bebop, which you enjoyed btw. They both have clean animation and a jazz up sound.
ROD OVA has ways of manipulating paper that I thought was pretty clever, plus
it has good animation.

Although most of em didnt need any intelligence to win, just pure skill.

Sounds like Hunter x Hunter would be right up your alley.

Also, based on these qualities alone...

...stay FAR away from Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. Even as a DBZ fan, I found the unlimited power reserves and the idiocy levels completely ridiculous.

The only anime that I've seen where intelligence was actually a factor in determining battle outcome is Konjiki no Gash Bell! - except that doesn't seem to be what you are looking for...

I second Hunter x Hunter. The fight between Hisoka and Gon in Heaven's Arena was one of the best I've ever seen, and it matches your first requirement as well. Gon thinks quick on his feet, while Hisoka has years of experience and ruthlessness on his side.

Actually, all of Gon's fights are worth watching, imo

Abso-bloody-lutely. Tmesis-worthy fights. Especially the second fight in the third episode - brief, brutal, brilliant.

I have to agree with you there, i was a bit disappointed with the disappearance myself. Code Geass is WAY TO OVERHYPED anyway. As for fight scene which are creative and full of twists, I'd have to recommend the first Yu-Gi_Oh series. Most Americans only know the card game series which followed, but lets just say the title "king of games originally had a much broader meaning". I hope that this recommendation applies, despite the fact that the "duals" don't often take on the appearance of straight up physical altercations. In addition, remember that the series came out in 1998 so the animation isn't as smooth as some new examples.

Bone's (relatively unknown) Sword of Stranger.

The great Yoshiyuki Ito directed the animators, and unsurprisingly he did an outstanding job.Every single fight is smooth, believable and of extreme quality. There are no shortcuts, cop outs or "tricks" that fool you into thinking It's good animation.

Sword of Stranger is from beginning to end, a raw & amazing work of animation.

Okay, I've been adding some of the things you guys suggest to my list. A few comments on things I have seen:
Code Geass - I saw the beginning, and it didn't work for me, but it wasn't because of the fights, some of which were pretty cool.
Naruto - I've seen some of it. The fights don't stand out to me (mostly they aren't smart by a long shot and depend on arbitrary chakra levels and last-minute interventions of the Power of Heart). Certainly not enough to watch such a long series for that alone. I might watch the rest someday, but I'd have to be bored.
ROD OVA - that was fun, but I saw it years ago. Maybe I'll watch the rest of the TV series someday.
Gash Bell - saw some of it on Cartoon Network. Definitely not what I'm looking for, though it was kind of fun sometimes.
Noir - I saw most of it, I think. Not sure how much. Not my favorite show, but some of the fights were cool.
Samurai X - saw the OVA a while back, and really didn't like it. Might check out the movie though.
Yu-gi-oh - I haven't seen the first series, actually, only one about the card game, but I used to read the comics, and the part before they get to the card game is indeed much better than the card game part. So much poetic justice.

I'm also encouraged that people are suggesting things I haven't even heard of. Keep it up guys!

I saw this in BluRay... I literally watched that whole movie with my jaw hanging and eyes wide open just blown away at the quality and smoothness of the animation

Not to mention the fight scenes are to die for

Also Black Lagoon - had some pretty good gun fights
Darker than Black - If I remember correctly this had some pretty good fight scenes and they all had their limits

If you want good fight scenes, check Grappler Baki seasons 1 and 2, or, for that matter, Shootfighter Tekken.

I imagine our criteria for good fight scenes is rather different then. Oddly our anime compatibility is quite high, even though that's not the only show we disagree about. Anyway, I'll consider those shows.

No, if your first post in this topic is any indication, we have very similar criteria when it comes to judging fight scenes. I have watched a few thousand live action kung fu films, and countless other action movies, though, so my criteria are relatively high.

I found the ones in Air Master to be much more stale, repetitive, and unimaginative than you did. (Not to mention poorly animated)

I think of everyone I've seen on this site, you have the third highest compatibility with me. Most are well under 55 percent.

I immediately thought of that series, but like you mentioned, despite the insanity, there aren't any fight scenes. I will second the cleverness aspect, though.

Thinking about it now, he fights that occurred in Ranma 1/2 were quite enjoyable. They were far from epic but they were fun and usually had a really good twist to them. I especially liked the Martial arts eating fights, as hilarious as they were bizarre and action pact.

Some of the fleet battles in Legend of the Galactic Heroes play out with many clever tactics.

Armored Trooper Votoms has some fight scenes with clever solutions and even some tactical realism here and there, but it's a bit variable, and frequently use cheap solutions now and then. The good fights are quite good though, and sometimes make a fuss out of ammo as well.

Isn't that what the OP asked for (fights don't take up entire episode)?

Anyway, Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze are both beautifully animated and are very intellectual, though the focus of fights tends to be on the consequences/results, not on the fight itself.

Shakugan no Shana - Supernatural, but limited. many cases where main protagonists have to rely on each other to get through the fight. Please stay away from kurokami, it's just hideous how much power the characters fight with. And it REALLY pisses me off when the guy just stands around and watches the girl get beat up.

Most fight scenes in anime tend to suck, since it's just the same motion repeated over and over.

Only anime with fluid, good lookingn fight scenes would probably be from Samurai Champloo. It doesn't repeat the same frames over and oveer, not that i remember of.

Or check out FFVII:AC, good fight scenes in there, better yet it's CGI.

"Humans are like isolated islands, floating in the sea of fate.
Human encounters are like the collision of these lonely islands, and once they touch, there would be an effect. Sometimes, the islands would stick together, in the name of ‘interest’, ‘kinship’, ‘friendship’, ‘love’ and ‘hate’. But eventually, they would separate, walking towards the path of destruction.

This is the truth behind life."
