This series looks to be one of the most promising of this Spring and so I was wondering if it would be best for me to watch all the other Lupin series prior to watching the new one.

I'd say probably not (haven't watched it yet). However, you should at least watch the original series to get to know the characters.

It's supposed to be a prequel and you CAN watch it without having seen the other series. But you SHOULD watch the other titles as well. Every respectable anime fan should've seen Lupin, it's one of the most influental franchises in the medium and it's nearly impossible to not come across Lupin when you're really interested in anime as a whole. I#d say the franchise is as much of a must-see as Cowboy Bebop and the likes.

I'd say you can.

First Lupin titles I saw were Castle of Cagliostro and Dead or Alive.

The Movies, OVAs and TV Specials are sort of stand alone.

Only TV Series part 1, 2 and 3 are directly connected to each other.

This new TV Series is a loose prequel but IMO is more of a reboot/remake.

If you want to get familiar with the characters I suggest at least watch the TV Special

"Episode 0: First Contact"

It's basically the origin story.

Many hold Cagilostro in high regard but I think First Contact is the best Lupin title to date.

Definitely agree with that. First Contact is one of the more serious Lupin films, but serves as a good intro.

And actually, I'm having trouble deciding how MAL should relate this to the main Lupin series. It's not a side story, that's for sure. This feels more like a remake to me as well instead of a prequel so I was leaning more towards alternative version. Or maybe spin-off? Prequel is still an option too though. I'm so bad at deciding this stuff orz. Any other awesome Lupin fans want to give their input?

I think alternate version is suitable. I don't think it was ever actually confirmed to be a prequel/side story was it?

While I'm giving suggestions (you might hate me for this because it'll involve a lot of editing), maybe change some of the relations to correspond with the jacket of a specific TV series.

At the moment every Lupin III title is connected to the Part 1 TV Series (Green Jacket).

That's fine for something like Cagliostro (green jacket) but maybe add red jacket TV Specials & movies (e.g. Dead or Alive, Eternal Mermaid) to Part 2 TV Series and Pink jacket titles (The Legend of the Gold of Babylon) to Part 3 TV Series.

No, it seems to be a restart of the series.

This. All you need to know is that Lupin is a thief.

id advise it so you can view it with the proper Lupin casting

That's the problem. There really isn't much info on the new series so we can only judge from what goes on in the episodes. But after more thinking/discussions - alternative version wins. There is more to this decision than going with when the story takes place. Could always change it later anywayz.

The special/movie relations are a bit of a mess, yeah. I'm not so sure jacket color is the way to go though. For instance the pilot film is surely meant to be for the first series (considering the date) yet Lupin's jacket is red. There's also Ellusivness in the Fog which is a remake of an episode from the first series and I believe should definitely be related to it on MAL, but the jacket is red once again. Gold Babylon should probably be listed with the third series anyway, but only because of the release date.

...meh Lupin is complicated in this regard. The relations do need some fixing though, I'll look more into it on Monday~

i vote for alternate version
it is a rewind/reboot

of course more episodes may dictate something else, but so far it is what I heard it would be -- back to the beginning, reworked.

hoestly, this looks like this is a great place for noobs to pick up the franchise, imo.

With Lupin the third, you've never really needed to have watched anything in any specific order. It's kind of like Bond in that respect, most, if not all of the movies are stand alone, the series themselves i believe are the only things with some form of continuity. But with this series, it feels like either a retake on it, or a prequel, so you can watch this whenever you want. First, last, whatever takes your fancy

No, every Lupin series is made of stand alone episodes, there's no continuity between episodes and thus you can get introduced to the series regardless of whatever episode you start watching.

Here's the few things you need to know before watching:
*Arsene Lupin the Third is the main character of the franchise. He's the descendant of the famous French gentleman thief Arsene Lupin the First. He goes around the world stealing works of art, jewels and other precious things with his friends Ishikawa Goemon and Daisuke Jigen, while Inspector Zenigata and Fujiko Mine try to thwart his plans. His weak point is the fair sex, especially Fujiko, which often causes his plans to fail. He uses a Walter P38 gun and drives a Mercedes-Benz SSK or a Fiat 500.
*Jigen Daisuke is the best marksman in the world, and with his trusty Smith&Wesson M19 Combat Magnum he goes along Lupin in his adventures. Despite that his eyes are always concealed by a hat, this helps him to take aim. Gruff and snarky, he's never seen without his cigarette. He's pretty cynical when it comes to romances, due to bad luck with women, and always tries to warn Lupin about Fujiko.
*Ishikawa Goemon the Thirteenth is the descendant of the famous Japanese thief Ishikawa Goemon. Even though he's a thief and Lupin's companion in thievery, he is the very image of the samurai: honourable, trustworthy, respectful of traditions, chaste and strict. His sword, the legendary Zanketsu-ken, can cut through anything (except konnyaku), never gets chipped or loses its edge and it's so sharp that even snowflakes get cut when they fall on the blade. His catchphrase is "Once again I have cut a worthless object", which he says whenever he uses Zantetsu-ken to do something spectacular that he nonetheless considers mundane. His master, Momochi no Jijii, ordered him to kill Lupin, but when Goemon discovered that he planned to kill him too, he switched sides and became Lupin's friend.
*Fujiko Mine is a shrewd femme fatale that only thinks about her own interests, and uses her beauty to get anything she wants, meaning money and jewels. She's not part of Lupin's gang but she uses him to further her plans, knowing that he's head over heels for her and will never refuse anything from her, and then abandons Lupin with the things he stole. Not always everything goes as planned for her because Lupin sometimes can see through her intentions and gives her a lesson. Even though she and Lupin are very promiscuous, they share a bizarre yet amicable relationship, like an old married couple. Her name is a pun on her huge breasts.
*Kouichi Zenigata is a Japanese Interpol detective. He always tries to catch Lupin in vain, either because he's completely ineffective and because they have an unaknowleged friendship that prevents him to go hard on Lupin. Arresting Lupin is his rasion d'être even though his hunt is bound to go on and on. Despite that he's quite intelligent and sometimes can see through Lupin's tricks, but his single mindedness is what brings him down. His favourite dish is ramen, and he's always seen wolfing down on some cup ramen.

There you go. Now you can watch Lupin from any episode from any season.

Just wondering if this show is like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo in terms of there being all stand alone episodes or if this shows episodes are continuations? Thanks

PS I was wondering the same thing if we needed to see the old Lupin series to understand the new one but I guess we don't.

The first few episodes revolve around the protagonist's first encounter with the other major characters but the later episodes add up to a overarching story and even those first few contain details and hints concerning the main plot. Question answered?
