Quoted from Shadowmage from Behind the Nihon Review,

"One of these days I’m going to get on Final Cut Pro and split Black Rock Shooter into two separate shows. One will be a melodrama about two school girls becoming best friends. The other will be a series of anime style video game cut scenes. Neither will be particularly good but both will be far superior to what Black Rock Shooter is now. For some inexplicable reason, the anime tries to build a meaningful drama from unremarkable characters set in a generic plot with the “interesting” hook being that their internal emotions are somehow personified with fight scenes amongst their alter egos. The problem is that the core drama itself feels so rushed and so forced that the fight scenes fail to feel meaningful and just come across as confusing."

I agree with it feeling rushed, but that can be blamed on the shorter running time than even most 1-cour anime. 8 Episodes is simply not enough to tell a good story - but at the same time - it could have been so much worse.

I wish they made it into a 25-episode series with more adult characters and a darker plot/drama behind it. Here's hoping for that!
"Evidently... There's no such thing as 'meaning' in this world. But that in itself is wonderful... isn't it? Since if there isn't a set meaning, then you can just find one on your own."

What? they've done a lot with it.
Now if they can just do decent drama, pacing and such then they have a hit on their hands.

The execution is the problem, not the concept.

OMG The girl drama in this show is so good! It's top stuff along with Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, Ga Rei Zero, and Manabi Straight. I love it so much!

I hope Mato is alright because she's so cool! All the other girls are cool too, except Yomi as she could use some cheering up for sure. Well looks like it may be too late for her now.

BRS TV shrunked down to 8 episodes really sucks. Wanted it to be longer too. Oh well, but if it ends right with me it'll be 9++/10 which looks like a likely possibility.

Am I the only one who thinks that Yuu purposely send Mato to the other world when Black Rock Shooter killed Dead Master, all this to awake insane Black Rock Shooter so she could fight with Black Gold Saw? I think so primarly because Yuu apologized to both Mato and Black Rock Shooter in the end of the episode, like she knew this was going to happen.

'Cept for the fact that the source of the fights in the other world is the drama.

Like I said, the problem is that it's too short. It's trying to squish too much drama in too short a time without leaving space for breathing room in between. The drama wouldn't feel that forced if there were some developments and down time to spread it all out.

I know nothing about the BRS franchise - just did a tiny bit of wiki-ing though.

wow, i wasn't into too much of this franchise, there are a lot of characters there to look into, this catched my eye, maybe when iBRS calm down could be able to transform into it to defeat Gold Saw.

This episode really confused me. I still don't understand what Saya intends to do by messing with the students' heads. And who exactly is Black Rock Shooter? Is she supposed to be Mato's other self?

3/5 for this episode.

Saya intends to use the other worlds to rid people of their worries - by making them horrible, then killing them completely with the other world. She enjoys it.

Black Rock Shooter is Mato's 'Other Self', and Mato was linked to her fully by Yuu/STR in the last bit of the episode.

But why she make other's world entities fight instead of killing them by herself through Gold Saw ?

just skimmed the previous episodes and always yuu appears inside shadows (so no shadow would be proyected) and the only part when should have casted a shadow it doesn't appear (episode 4):

No, its the contrary.
Strenght is working for Gold Saw from the beginning. She just don't share her motives and also, after all this time as Mato's friend her conscience is in crisis.
I predict that Strength will switch sides in the final battle.

And, anyone see this, that Mato/Shooter will die?
That book kept talking about that bird that went taking a lot of colors and they were mixing up until his wings get black. When this happened, the bird died.
I am the only one who sees the bird as Mato?

I really think this episode hints (at least) that Mato's the Tiny Bird, not Yomi. I always thought so, but this ep makes me think it's true.

It bugs me that Yuu and Mato were best friends but Yuu was hiding what she knew all this time. Can't wait till this is explained. Hopefully it will be.

Read around and it seems some think Yuu is a spirit. That just seems kind of lame and kind of sad. Feels like this might finish bittersweet. <_<

It's finally getting really interesting now the real world is really starting to change.Yu explained a lot of it to Mato, so it's finally making more sense now.

Now that BRS killed her in the other world, does that mean Yomi will forget all about Mato in the real world?

Damn, I wasn't so sure about the first 2~3 episodes but this and episode 4 have hooked me. However, I'm not sure I'm following the storyline anymore. Too much going on.

SPOILERS UP TO CHAPTER 5 BELOW

Saya pretty much has a twisted operation going on. She uses her manipulation (see: "Counselling") and 'coffee' to scare these girls into developing huge mental issues (See: Yomi) By doing this, she is able to link them to the bodies she 'grows' in the dark world as Black Gold Saw.

Black Rock Shooter is able to 'free' these people from their sorrows and grievances in the real world by killing their other-self in the Dark World. When a 'other self' dies, all memories of the person's issues vanish, including the cause, the reaction, and any details. This happened with Kagami/Chariot. Black Rock Shooter (Mato) is slowly being destroyed mentally by Saya's Manipulation, and physically by the other girls in the Dark World.

Strength/Yuu seems to have the same link Black Gold Saw/Saya has between the two worlds. This will likely be explained more within the next few episodes. They know about each world, and they can control 'themselves' in both worlds. STR/Yuu sides with BRS/Mato, by trying to help her solve their problems without the use of killing Dead Master. Dead Master/Yomi essentially sides with Black Gold Saw/Saya unwillingly, by giving into Saya's Manipulation.

The only thing that's really left unexplained at this point, is that we don't know how Saya and Yuu have control over their other selves in the Dark World. It's quite possible that they've simply had them long enough, and they've linked. It seems like Mato is going to link with BRS, but I can't wait to see how, seeing as how Black Rock Shooter has essentially lost her mind and gone.. well, Insane.

I've always wondered how iBRS fit into the universe, and - while this is entirely my own hypothesis - I believe that iBRS appears when Mato is in an extremely depressed/psychotic state when linked with BRS.

Either way, I can't way - the cracked star at the end is a nice little nod at iBRS' character symbol, where:

BRS = Clean ★
iBRS = Cracked ★
Dead Master = Skull
Black Gold Saw = Horned Crown/Helmet
Stength = Cubed Fist

nice summary :o

Finally an episode in this anime I can call interesting. It's sad that it happened only 3 more episodes till the end. IMO the anime should have started with this, it would have been epic. Very good episode overall, I finally rated this 5/5 without lowering ladder too much. However, what worries me, is that BRS should have been dead about 10 times already (at least 5 only in the first 2 episodes). Other "others" get hit once or their head chopped and they die. BRS could be torn to pieces (or mashed) and nothing happens? That's too much of a plot devce to ignore.

Also, about the whole Yuu thing, I think that maybe the real Yuu died or something happened to her and Strength took her place in the real world. I mean, if one's "other" dies in the other world their memory of their suffering is erased. Maybe if something happens to the real person, their "other" can replace them temporarily, creating fake memories (Matou found t hard to recall Yuu) but after some time those memories disappear. It would explain why STR hasn't appeared in the other world until everyone forgot about Yuu (when she possibly came back).

I think Strength (aka Yuu) started out working for Saya/BGS because she kind of brought Matou to Saya's office and possibly more people. Her job was something like helping BGS to get rid of BRS but she became too close to Matou and decided to change sides. Maybe that's why she disappeared from evryone's memories and (in a way) from the realworld, to hide from Saya because she wanted to side with Matou. That explains why she came to Saya nearly angry but she couldn't tell her everything on her mind because BGS could hold some power over her (maybe she has her real self, or she simply brainwashed her and Yuu got confused). But it's also possible, that STR had no real self (although she would be first) and thus can go from one world to another anytime, altering everyone's memories as she pleases (or maybe that was the work of Saya). So or so, it is clear that Yuu and Saya are the only ones aware of the other world from the vey end. Now, that Matou is on the scene and BRS went nuts it can get very intense, unless we get some crappy directing like the crazy kids' drama.
