Since you can't in Japan

Summoned by the city of Amagasaki one recent morning, Minoru Nogiri, 45, a flower shop owner, found himself lining up to have his waistline measured. With no visible paunch, he seemed to run little risk of being classified as overweight, or metabo, the preferred word in Japan these days.

But because the new state-prescribed limit for male waistlines is a strict 33.5 inches, he had anxiously measured himself at home a couple of days earlier. “I’m on the border,” he said.

Under a national law that came into effect two months ago, companies and local governments must now measure the waistlines of Japanese people between the ages of 40 and 74 as part of their annual checkups. That represents more than 56 million waistlines, or about 44 percent of the entire population.

...Those exceeding government limits — 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women, which are identical to thresholds established in 2005 for Japan by the International Diabetes Federation as an easy guideline for identifying health risks — and having a weight-related ailment will be given dieting guidance if after three months they do not lose weight. If necessary, those people will be steered toward further re-education after six more months.

...

At least the government is concerned for the welfare of the citizens. I'm not really for it myself, but I can see the benefits of enacting such a program.

I wonder what the 'further re-education' would be if the people didn't lose the weight after the six months. Doesn't sound very enjoyable.

It's nice to see a government concerned with the health of its people.

Or are they worried that being overweight will affect the public's ability to work and therefore affect the economy?

It is certainly interesting that they are ensuring the Japanese are avoiding obesity. It will make it easier for those with weight issues to get help and support. It is motivational.

I also agree that a person has a right to control their own body though. If someone wants to be fat fat, then they should be allowed to. They understand the risks and so shouldn't be forced to change. What bugs me though, are those who choose to be overweight, then complain about it and claim disability benefits because they are so overweight their body can't work like it used to.

Hmm, strange one! In a way i wish they would bring something like this into England, i'm not fattist or anything. You just see alot of people getting all depressed because of their weight and maybe with some extra help and support they'd be able to drop the pounds and be more active again!

Government concern over ppl health is nice, indeed, but is it nice to force ppl to lose weight? Rly not everyone has to look like movie stars. Or be perfect.

I don't believe that losing weight of people older than 70 can affect economy, much. What retirement age is there, anyway? And if they care so much about economy why this dos not include teenagers, I believe they should solve the matter here, not with older people (40-74?).

Anyway I think it's just strange. What's next, stretching people to short? Oh well >.>

I hardly think the main purpose for this decision is to make Japan more aesthetically pleasing (although I wouldn't doubt there's a little bit of that in there =p). Science has proved many times that skinnier people have a better quality of life. They get sick less, they get less tired, they put less stress on their organism and they feel better physically and mentally, among other things. All factors taken into account, skinny people depend less on medical help and live longer and better, so the law is actually advantageous for both parties.

Japan is heading to a lot of trouble with the proportional increase of aged citizens in their population, and there are only so many people that can live off of a dwindling working class, so they decided to take some preventive steps. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Oh Japan, why can't the big media insult your big government? Is it right to infringe on someone's privacy for the better good? Oh Japan, you and your hate of Individualism/Freedom what are we gonna do with you?

I agree with everyone that says this is a good thing...because it is. They're not telling people "LOOSE WEIGHT OR GTFO," it's more like "Lose weight, or we will be forced to help you."

Also, it's part of a physical, which at that age you should be doing anyway to keep an eye on your health. If observing waist size can help doctors catch diabetes at an early age, then they can save people's lives.

On the one hand, I am apprehensive of a government that does "too much" for its people, but on the other hand, it's great to see them stepping up to help people out. This is designed to help people who have health risks and may not know about it.

Maybe you need a reality check? u.u

If you already know that, then you should have expected comparisons with the USA in a forum where over half the users are North-American.

If you don't accept wiki articles as credible sources, then just check the facts from the articles in the reference section:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/03/AR2006050302399_pf.html

And here are some more sources if you would like them:

The fact that you live in america (according to your profile) and haven't heard of this is mind-boggling. Do you live under a rock, perhaps? XD Or maybe where you live, people are really healthy and the subject just doesn't come up (here's hoping).

Considering Japanese people are generally of smaller stature anyway, over 30" is actually quite large.
