Excellent ED--it looks like they might plan a different one for each episode since that was very harlequin themed. Just because this takes place in the 1920's, don't assume that it is Gosick second season (after all the library is in a basement not a garden tower).

Foolish human, you really should ask just what responsibilities you are taking on before you read the key....

Also interesting to note that some of the most famous grimoires had "key" as part of their titles.
Please don't feed the trolls!

I didn't find the actual episode very creepy. That ED however... o____o

I thought the live-action backgrounds were alright but I've seen them integrated better (prime example - Heroman's 2nd ED). Combining the creepy ED and the mixed media, it almost seems more like SHAFT than Gainax. Also there was a conspicuous lack of fanservice that I was grateful for.

Just because it has a similar premise to Gosick doesn't mean it can't surpass it. I find Hugh to be a much more likable and intelligent male lead than Kujo. Still unsure about my feelings towards Dalian, she rubbed me the wrong way a little.

It like Gosick, though both stories are good

Arts good, voice actors are good ( Daisuke..... <3 )

Ending creep the heck out of me =___=

Shakugan no Gosick!?

Meh to be honest I'm not finding this so interesting because I feel it's just too generic. Generic might not be the right word but that's the only one I can grasp right now.

So Gosick season 2 is a go! So what happened in this episode?

Stuff lots of stuff happened.

The characters are boring though. Blondy can fight and Tsundere loli is mildly tsundere. Which I normally would not mind, cause I have distaste for tsundere character's that are all tsun with no dere. But bleh.

It was just bleh overall. It's like you have a good idea but no heart to the story. But hey it's only the first episode...so who knows maybe it will get better?

However, the animation of the reading of the magic book was beautiful and over all the animation is well done.

And the ending...wtf. I was a bit creeped out. Honestly though it was probably the most interesting thing up of the first episode.

Loved it from beginning to the end, including that very creative (and creepy, I'll admit it) ending. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a strong competitor for the title of best anime in this season.

The tsundere is repulsive, unbearable, the protagonist is cliche, the whole series looks like it's going to be the-monster-of-the-week succession seasoned with a typical mystical evil-battle excuse for a plot. The ending was the only thing that interested me. No watching, naturally.

Nyuh, really like Huey as a protagonist; he's very smart and down to earth. : ) Dalian's just a bit of a Victorique with a more gothic fashion sense, haha! I mean the library as well, come on.

Thought the episode was okay, not brilliant, however I will keep watching - it does have some potential to become quite good.

wow going by the posts i see people have linked this to mostly gosick, personally i thought pandora hearts would be more fitting especially considering there is an alternate world, demons, and tsundere lead in play lol (sorry if anyone else mentioned it before, i didnt bother going through the 2nd and 3rd pages)

ANYWAYS +100 points to Huey for being such a pro male protagonist, smart and dexterous = awesomeness
I was actually surprised the key was used to open Dalian's chest, totally uncalled for, but hey surprise element is very much welcome ;) First episode looks quite promising (freaky clown girl in the ending scared the hell out of me though, hurray for the fitting ED woot)

Edit: woot looks like Vaanskylord said it before me XD~

I don't know what the haters are on about. For a Gainax adaptation, and with the source as generic as it is, it acquainted itself very well, with its refreshing spin on the setting.

Yes, I agree with the Gosick, Pandora Hearts, and Index vibes going on here. Despite that, I quite liked this first episode. It was rushed, but the characters seem interesting and likeable.

My full thoughts on the episode are here on my blog.

I'm hoping for good things from this series! I quite like the fantasy concepts in this.

It was good for the most part, though the contract and reading of book took a lot of time. Premise is interesting.
I'm surprised at the lack of surprise of Huey when the enemies turn to ash and his sudden acceptance to all that's happening but that's a big plus I guess. Also he can defend himself.
And I could listen to Sawashiro Miyuki's voice here all day <3
Looking forward to this.

ED is just =_=

ok first of all, although he is skilled and obviously very intelligent, no one adapts to a situation like that so skillfully. i hate how the would be "hero" always knows what to do without hesitation.

secondly....the whole notion that somethings are not meant be known or seen needs to be dropped. that is the sort of thing that people decide after having seen/known them. humanity does not need to be protected or saved...it needs to be given a chance to destroy itself or save itself without interference.

i can already tell i would not like this show but ill give it another couple episodes.

I loved pretty much everything about this except for the dragon who waited patiently for them to finish talking, contracting and for Huey to read the book. Apart from that, I found the episode really good. I like the setting and premise and Huey is (for now) one of the best protagonists I've seen in a while. It seems like he's skilled, intelligent and quite brave as well (not to mention quick to adapt). Dalian is... a tsundere. I don't know what to think of her so far - most tsundere characters annoy me to no end but if the archetype doesn't get the usual over-the-top execution... I may find myself liking her. At least it wasn't instant dislike.

Interesting first episode, it had a nice feeling to it but the whole anime will have a sort of creepy/thriller like feeling I guess?

Dalian kinda annoys me, she's so spoiled and acts like she knows everything better... Why do almost all female (main) characters nowadays have to be so cold and bitchy? What's up with the english "yes"? Why doesn't she do anything to help him while he's fighting for their lives (and she's always standing still as if counting on him to save her -_-) and I sort of dislike her hair, it's such a strange color o.o

I do like Hugh, he seems to be a nice guy and I think he's kinda interesting :)

Omg the ending was fcking creepy O.O"

I was just excited for this anime, I wasn't expecting too much out of it, but I thought it was pretty interesting. No, I haven't watched Gosick before, but I dunno, I like the feel to this.

I think Sawashiro Miyuki's voice acting was a little different this time around, but nothing bad at all. Same goes for Ono Daisuke's, though it sounded a lot softer.

The animation was really nice and I'm looking forward to the later episodes to come.

Well, this looks quite cool! I love animes that take place / have a Victorian era feel to them. I love the creepy feel to it. The ED was marvelous, and you don't see stuff like that very often. Very, very well done, and it completely matches the creepy aura from the rest of the anime. Art was very nice, too. I love that technique of taking actual photos then doctoring and distorting them.

I definitely have high hopes for this anime. I am definitely going to continue this.

My two must have factors for not dropping an anime are typically
an original plot (or at least an interesting idea)
and characters depth. (I have zero tolerance for cookie cutters and Mary Sues.)

Obviously the first episode would be way too early to judge these things. Still, so far Dalian bores me- I feel like I've seen that "personality" way too much lately- and with the other one, I'm still undecided. I like how he seems to be intelligent, and the general air he gives off is a bit refreshing, but I still need to see some defining trait. It's a nice change to watch a levelheaded character go about, just I wish his only excuse for strolling though that mansion in a near emotionless manner wasn't "It appears that I don't have time to be skeptical" Or maybe that problem lies with how this episode as a whole seemed somewhat rushed.
Despite all this, my interest has been caught, so I'll test out the next couple of episodes or so.
