Who Kicks more ass?

I was idly sitting at my computer the other day trying to study for finals when one of my stranger friends came on msn and asked me me.
Who kicks more ass, ninjas or samurais?
This spawned a debate that still has not come to an end.
I want to know, in MAL's opinion, who can kick more ass, a stealthy ninja or a skilled samurai.

Be sure to include your reasons if you decide to post

ah! the old samurai/ninja debate. This is a tough one but i have to say Ninjas. not the naruto kind but the really cool stealth kind. I think its just cooler to appear out of nowhere and assassinate someone. Also when i think of Samurai, i think of those in the huge armor and i'm not fond of those. But then again, after i think of that, i think of Kenshin. Thats when it makes things difficult. In the end though, its Ninja's for me

I'm more fond of samurai, really. Ninjas are cool and all, but I'm partial to the whole chivalry and honor thing I guess.

samurais are for wussies...i mean, seriously...what's cooler? the whole, "i'm gonna follow the bushido code full of honor and chivalry and fight only honest battles" or "i'm gonna freakin stab you in the middle of the night in a dark alley when you're not looking?" i think the answer is pretty obvious... :P NINJAS FTW!

the official rankings...

cyborg space pirate ninja samurais > ninjas > samurais > pirates > cyborgs

Yeah, I mostly agree to Faust there. I also like Ninjas more. And since there are ones as skilled with Katana as there are Samurais who know how to handle a swords, Ninjas have an advantage in my eyes due to their stealthy actions, the traps etc..

Firstly, I think (I may be wrong) Samurai is plural in and of itself, much like sheep or fish, so samurais would be improper grammar.

Anyways, I'd have to go with ninjas. Even on the assumption that the samurai is considerably better in armed combat than the ninja, it doesn't do him any good if his food is poisoned or keep his throat any more intact while he sleeps.

As for this part, I agree. Fighting an honest battle is a fast way to end up dead. What one should always do is prioritize the objective. I mean, what's more important realistically? Fighting for your honor or Completing the mission? I might be crazy, but its my opinion the mission would come first. And it is this aspect that the ninja follows.
It shouldn't matter who or how you have to kill, but so long as the target dies, all is well.

I'd have to go with Ninjas too, dispite my heavy fondness for samurais. Rulebreaker has a major point. You either kill or be killed.

But still...

Normal Ninjas > Jin, Mugen and Kenshin > The Ask A Ninja > The Naruto ninjas.

I go with the ninjas. They tend to not have a problem killing people and can do their killing silently. Samurais are cool too cuz of the whole honor thing but I still side with stealth. =)

Samurai may be skilled combattants, but the having to battle honourably severley limits their usefulness...
Assasination is such a beautiful art, I would have to say Ninjas...Of course, as long as the Ninja does not fuck up his surprise attack...If he does, he would probably not have much chance against a Samurai...

Ninja, I'd prefer their type of assassinations and their weapons.
Rather kill someone when they have their guard dropped and are not aware of what'll happen than challange them to a duel or tell them before, or in general show that you are going to kill him/her.

Pirates suck. They're Just a bunch of brute drunken slobs with no real expertise in anything but handling a ship, looting or raping-properly. A ninja can easily kill his way through one without blinking an eye head-on or by stealth.

Samurais. Sure Ninja can probably kill better, but that doesn't make em cooler in my eyes. If you can kill with honor, that makes you better.

So, you would rather fight a battle for honor with a greater chance if death, than use covert tactics, complete the mission objective, and live to see anther day? Ninja train hard for their skills, so there's nothing cowardly about it. Calling them cowards is like calling a samurai who uses a better style a coward because of the style he uses. If one has trained and worked hard for what they got, there's absolutely nothing wrong in putting it to use.

This is the way of the ninja. Even without showing his presence, he is still victorious.

it appears I evened the vote. I go ninja.

Samurai are cool, yes, but they run extremely high risks of death. A great samurai can therefore fall to his death to newbish little peons due to poor strategy. This should never happen to a great ninja, who is trained to conceal his presence and fight using proper tactics, not "proper honor." There's nothing wrong with having honor, but in the end, I'd rather make the smart choice.

Actually, since both words are true japanese words, pluralisation rules to not apply, it could be either Samurais and Ninjas, or Samurai and Ninja

I vote Samurai by the way, and here is my argument:
The question was, who can kick more ass. My feelings on this one are that a ninja has to be stealthy, and can only attack in the cover of darkness (which in my opinion is more limiting than the honor code).
You see, a ninja has to wait for night fall and creep into a house and kill everyone systematically and quietly. If someone sees him, he is completely screwed without any amour. Whereas a skilled samurai can just walk in through the front door and proceed directly to kicking ass. Not to mention, that a ninja surprise attack should not work against a sufficiently skilled samurai as they are supposed to be ever vigilant to danger.

Example :
Afro Samurai Vs. Kakashi

Also, the concept of training does not really come into this argument as historically Ninja simply referred to hit men, they were not necessarily well trained, and though they met occasional success, they were usually slaughtered by their samurai targets en masse.

Assuming a ninja has to attack after nightfall is ridiculous. You don't NEED darkness to stay concealed, it's just a major help. That's why a true ninja would always CHOOSE to attack after dark, to gain an edge.

An extremely skilled samurai on the other hand, would walk in, start bustin up the place, and have some n00b who happened to grab a sword cause the samurai woke him up come up behind him and stab him. BAM, samurai just died to some retard who doesn't know how to wield a sword, but he could at least tell you which end was the business end.

I find it hard to believe that a truly skilled ninja would ever find himself in such a situation. Also, assuming that a ninja must kill one at a time isn't right either, ninja are well trained in combat techniques with all forms of weapons. Also, I believe they could wear armor, so they aren't "completely screwed."

And finally, to pit a samurai vs. a ninja isn't a fair fight. So you throw the two into the ring and say "duke it out." That completely takes away the tactical aspect of the ninja. And STILL I wouldn't put it past a ninja, cause those guys carry smoke bombs and like eye irritant powders and shit.

In the end, I believe that equally skilled combatants are differentiated by their creativity in combat. Hands down ninja.

An extremly skilled samurai would have probably heard that n00b.. I dont think a n00b would have the guts to walk silently up to a uberhigh skilled samurai and actually be able to stab him.

Same thing happened to ninjas, most of the time they were just shot with arrows, clubbed over the back of the head, stabbed on the way out or later on in the game, just shot (though not by samurai obviously as they are too cool for muskets)

the point is, that sort of thing is far less likely to happen when you pre-plan as much as you can and don't put yourself in those situations, which is what a ninja does. A samurai on the other hand, merely charges into combat. Head on assault. You are much more likely to die that way.

I'll agree that both can and were killed by no-named assailants. Being famous doesn't mean you can only be killed by other famous people.

Anyways,

This I also agree with. But to add, a ninja doesn't even have to strike you to kill you. Poisons work just as effectively at killing a man as a sword does. The same with traps.

Also on this note, I agree. Why put your life in unnecessary danger? Utilizing your brain to come up with a winning strategy that also maximizes the survival rate sounds a hell of a lot better than running in like you have a death-wish.

Okay.

Some of you people are underestimating Samurai's and their abilities. I take Kendo, so I think I have some valuable information to add here.

That is.. wrong! A samurai is always on guard... just as much as a ninja.
In Kendo one of the first things they teach you, even though none of us will actually ever be in a real combat situations is to never take your eyes off your opponent. When we bow, we look our opponent in the eyes while doing a shallow slow bow, which would be a disrespectful way to bow in Japan. When we turn, we have to always face our opponent, and we are not supposed to put down our sword unless we are meditating. When we fight, we look our opponent in the eye. So, if in Kendo we are trained to never our let our guard down, imagine what a real samurai would be like. Probably about 300 times more aware and skilled than this. Plus they are more honorable.. being a ninja would gain zero respect.. And if some stupid person tried to stab a samurai, they could not cut through the armor and would have to hit the head. We are taught to be able to look everywhere using our peripheral vision without actually turning. The Samurai WOULD notice, because the person would probably make a lot of noise trying to stab the samurai. I guarantee you this. I have not even been doing Kendo that long, and I know if I were fighting someone, unless there was loud music and like very shitty circumstance, then I myself would notice, and be able to kill the n00b in a second
Yes.. that is what I have to say..

oh and I obviously voted for Samurai!

Yes, yes you are right, but a ninja can throw all sorts of stuff at you. I'd love to throw a shuriken or a kunai at someone I hate. Ninjas have a funny way of running though =/

And BTW that katana wielding ninjas argument is stupid, same as "a ninja can through stuff from afar".

Most ninja didn't use a katana and saying it is like adding a sober pirate to the ninja-pirate argument, which, even if possible, it's an extreme exception that is not valid with fundamental characteristics of the ninjasamuraipiratew4h73hv4r.

Also, Samurais could just as well train themselves with bows, and as we all know, in the latter eras, circa the Meiji Revolution (AKA, Dance Dance Revolution 0 - The Meiji Edition) and later on, a lot of samurais (especially those who rode on horses) used rifles from a distance and just dropped them when they had to fight in close quarters.

I will agree though, that when i played Tenchu 1 for the first time it was wicked (w1hck33333333333333333d!!!!!) Cool...

I seem to enjoy ninja anime series more than samurai ones, so I'll have to say ninjas. They seem to be more capable too, they're very stealthy and they're always portrayed as very skillful not only in sword fighting but other martial arts as well.
