THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
There's some references to the influential British TV series The Prisoner in this episode such as the surreal village of mindless conformity and obedience where people have numbers and not names, Lupin's resistance of this by asserting his individuality, and especially the mysterious use of a large bubble that originates in water to chase down and engulf rebels, although the "Rover" of The Prisoner hugged the ground rather than floated in the air and was an opaque white. The unfortunate Number 108 even resembles the star of The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan, in his buttonless shirt and jacket.

McGoohan played "Number Six" in The Prisoner. Here his stand-in is Number 108 probably for the symbolic value of the number in Japanese culture but I don't understand that well enough to comment further though I imagine it's being used in a very shallow manner, this series being what it is.

It's not an extensive cribbing; after using some recognizable images the episode goes off in its own direction, such as the use of Christianity for an appeal to exoticism for the original Japanese audience.

I found Lupin's final attack on Lavina with hydrogen somewhat mysterious. After looking it up, the best I can figure is that she's going to suffocate because the hydrogen is diluting the breathable air inside the bubble. This is a unusually cruel way for a villain to be defeated for this series.

There were couple of minor animation fails, like ammunition that disappears from Lupin or door that changes how it looks in the church (and it can be even disputed that those are different doors), but nothing too noticeable or negligent

Weird episode with no Fujiko. While I liked bits and pieces, it's nowhere near one of my favorites.

Vengeance of everyone's grudge.

Yeah I figured the bubble mighta been a Prisoner reference. Familiar with it through Simpsons parodies. XD Lupin's way of handling/killing her was startlingly brutal and cruel.

Doesn't make any sense you destroyed the bell and they're all free from mind-control
I wouldn't say they're hypnotized, it's more of mind-control

Well Team Rocket Blasts Off Again! Except this time + suffocation xD
That's kinda dark, Lupin but she deserved that

The premise for this episode is cliché, but nonetheless an interesting one. Just too bad that it fell kinda flat for me.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

That was one scary woman. Turning people, including Jigen and Goemon, into slaves stripped of their free will like that in order to sell them as merchandise to die. Good thing Lupin was able to save his friends, and I guess that gas ended the woman too, but she was reporting to someone, so this human experimentation is most certainly going on in other places too, scary stuff.

Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but 'The Prisoner' was an obvious Cold War allegory, and this episode is about a secret military experiment, so it kind of makes sense to me.
