THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

I usually don't like this kind of episode-- the type with all the flashbacks. But in this case I really appreciated getting a chance to see Judy as she was at the beginning of the series, because wow, she's REALLY grown up! The animators did really good work on aging all the main trio so that they look older, but still are unmistakeably themselves.

Judy has changed in behavior, too-- she's not nearly as wild and wacky (and kind annoying!) as when she started high school. She acts more like a young lady. I had noticed that the character looked older, but I hadn't realized how much she had grown up in other ways, too.

And wow-- the preview for the next episode makes me wish I didn't have work to do this afternoon. I was wondering when we were going to get to see a bit more of Master Jervie!

What I don't understand is that why both Judy and Sadie behave like they should be ashamed of coming from an orphanage. Instead of that, Judy should be ashamed of her ungrateful behaviours towards Daddy Long Legs.

This is kinda annoying, basically Judy has a massive inferiority complex and all this time she hasn't gotten any character development at all. At least I want to see her being honest to herself.

Sigh

That reunion with Sadie was delightfully awkward and it was really sad in a way hearing about how times moved at the orphanage without her. Hope all the orphans are having a good life too.

Judy's developed in quite a lot of ways from the start of this series but she's definitely not gained any confidence about being open about her past. It's a really big obstacle to overcome so I can understand why she still has it but I'm eager to see how it turns out when it comes time to conquer it.

While watching I didn't think they had really aged at all, but during the flashbacks you could really see they did.

Is it really that hard to understand that someone that grew up in poverty and in an orphanage doesn't share that past with girls in a rich, high-class school? Suddenly all her eccentricities aren't eccentricities any more, but because of her upbringing and past, every faux pas too.

The best they can do is not to get depressed for a long period of time.

It would let them think about what's happening and connect things together to find the lost piece of information.
And still, Bill will live on.
He will befriend the next inhabitants of the earth, beings of light who revere him as a god.
And Bill will outlive them all... for millions and millions of years...exploring, learning, living,
until the earth is swallowed beneath his feet.
Until the sun is long since gone.
Until time loses all meaning and the moment comes that he knows only the positions of the stars
and sees them whether his eyes are closed or open.
Until he forgets his name and the place where he'd once come from.
He lives and he lives until all of the lights go out.

I was ready to dismiss this as a recap episode at the beginning but boy was I wrong ! This flashback has a lot of value as for the development of Judy, seeing Sadie proves she was not a part to be dismissed. Seeing her decline Judy's money is a pleasant throwback to episode 3 where Judy refuses to accept Julia's money.

Daddy Long Legs is being unreasonable, I'm still mad that he didn't let Judy go with the others and made her feel like that, but she is still living a dream thanks to him. You can even say that she is a chosen one, as uncertain as her current circumstances are, and her meeting with Sadie only helped to drive it home. It was "funny" just how miserable Judy was feeling because she couldn't go where she wanted, while Sadie, who was going to work and doesn't have the same luck, could only imagine how wonderful it would be to spend a summer vacation in a farm. Meeting a known face was good for Judy though, but it felt bad to see them almost being judged by people just for bringing up "orphanage" word. Well, the orphanage Judy knew and grew up in doesn't exist anymore. Not as she knew it since there's no one left who knows about her there. But again, I'm glad they met. I feel like they were able to support and encourage each other. Judy wants to be free, but freedom only lasts as long as your money does. The world isn't fair, but she has to make the most of what she has.

As angry and honestly weirded out I am by how controlling "Daddy" has been in these last few episodes, I do think that Judy needed to realize her situation a little more and I think that seeing Sadie and hearing about the people back at the orphanage definitely helped that.

...that being said- with the preview and all, I can see that my suspicion about Jarvie bochan monopolizing Judy (can't have her hanging out with a potential love rival so he orders her to not go as Daddy) is correct and I.. don't really know how I feel about that. I guess I'll have to see if he's manipulative in the next episode.

By definition, everything is retro since by the time you realize something has happened it's already in the past.
