I don't remember exactly when studios decided 12 should be the standard for a full anime, but it's clearly a very lacking model, and it only fits giant multi-season animes.

12 eps is not enough to tell a decent story, everything ends up rushed, nonsensical and the end result is just terrible, I feel like this could have had a much better reception if it was given the real standard of 24 eps animes used to have.

It is completely possible to tell a great complete story in 12 episodes and even less; the main problem of this series is that it focuses on so many unnecessary things (like all the side characters' relationships).

I don't think that was the problem really. If anything it feels like they had too much time to fill. I already said this on the episode thread, but I think this should have been a movie instead of a whole season.

The other question is how much they had to compromise the vision for the story. Was this how it was supposed to be or they did they not have the budget to make it like they wanted for example?

That's an issue with the writers, it is very possible to tell a story in 12 episodes, a few examples: Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica, Erased, A Place Further Than the Universe, Death Parade. And most of those are also original anime.

Alma-chan did it in 11 neat episodes this season.

I found the pacing intolerable. Fast, slow, mellow, violent, half of it made little sense. It would get dropped if there were 12 more episodes to suffer through.

They could have done a lot better with story & direction: some focus! The show was "all over the place" trying to fill every genre there is, it seems!

This series DEF spent too much time on things that didn't really develop the man story and then they rushed the ending. But despite that it was still a very interesting post apocalyptic series. I love the focus in new series around AI destroying the world! I also love a good romance. Akira and Yogure were DEF the best part of this watch!

I understand your point. I mean, of course you CAN tell a good story in 12 episodes or even less (movies) and this anime could done so if it had focused more on the main plot...

...but only with 24 episodes you could have had room for both the episodic side characters' stories and the main plot. I doubt it would have been any good since the biggest issue is the writing as a whole starting from its foundations, but there would have been one less problem.

While I agree that it's very possible to tell great stories in less episodes, THIS story needed more time.

I don't agree that taking the time to explore side characters quests and relationships is a bad thing, that's a major component of what THIS story is about and its way of telling the Worldbuilding.

But in fact the last arc felt extremely rushed. THIS story deserved another season to solve its pacing problems, and finish many threads not in this hurry or left open.

Still I loved it, felt very happy as a non-monogamous person that it was a major plot point (albeit badly handed at many times), and it was enjoyable to watch. 9/10 <3
