Coming out on February 5, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It'll be a large-scale remake like Final Fantasy VII Remake. So it won't be HD-2D, and will look more like Dragon Quest XI. It'll be the second time Dragon Quest VII gets a remake, after getting a remake on Nintendo 3DS in 2013 in Japan (2016 outside of Japan).

I've played (and own) Dragon Warrior VII on PS1 btw (bought it years ago, and stopped playing 2 hours in because I didn't know how the fuck to progress). Played DQ VIII and XI too, and made much more progress in those 2 games, putting in over 20 hours of gaming in each game. Never beaten a DQ game. Always reach a point where I don't know what to do next.

Anything remade or reimagined is worthless , i am not paying for "updated graphics" (who cares?) , quality of life changes (who cares?) and re-writing for modern audiences.

I will give the Dragon Quest series credit on one thing, even though they love remaking their old stuff at the very least they are also making brand new entries into the series. I probably won't be checking this out and will stick to the original, but it looks nice graphically speaking.

I'll buy it at a discount if they can convince me it's better than the 3DS version, which I wanted to play but never did.

@Retro8bit

DQ7 on PS1 made me quit the series O__O. The game felt too repetitive with no progress in the first hours. It must get really good halfway through! A lot of people say this.

I rank the first 6 btw, everyone hails DQ4 DQ5 as the best but I disagree O_O

DQ3 > DQ1 > DQ2 > DQ4 > DQ6 > DQ5

None of them are bad btw, and DQ3 is a 10/10 RPG imo one of my favorites

While we're here, the 10/10 RPGs :D just my opinion!

Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 6
Dragon Quest 3 (Super Famicom remake, NES version is 9/10)
Persona 3
Final Fantasy (NES original only)

Secret of Mana would be listed, but it's not a true RPG imo with its action elements.

Many other greats have tiny flaws that don't even matter the first playthrough. Chrono Trigger for example: it doesn't have the lifelong replay-ablity of Tactics imo. Same with Mother 3 and Undertale. Suikoden 2 is near perfect but a bit too easy imo.

I thought 5 was considered the best since it got a movie, though I think it's the worst of Zenithia. I still prefer it over the entire 1st trilogy which aged like trash.

I've only played the PSP version but I agree that it is a top RPG, albeit obscenely easy.

Ah you're right it is DQ5 that everyone loves! I had to check the subreddit to make sure. It's good, but I don't get the hype for it. I was never WOWed by any of those post-trilogy DQs even though they are good. Same with the Golden Suns.

The FF1 remakes were far too easy >_< they are only worth looking at the graphical upgrades which are wonderful ;_;

Try the NES DQs on a colorful tablet via emulator, something with a large screen around 8 inches preferably an OLED screen. No guides. I find this makes the graphics more appealing and as they are supposed to be, with the cryptic challenge intact. You will need to make notes and maps for 2 and 3 :D

I'd buy them on Switch if I wanted them to look good, but I don't care how they look. They're not fun to play.

@Shishio-kun

So considering you felt that way about the original PS1 version, are you planning to pick this one up then?

Intriguing news! I didn't think that DQ7 would be the next, after DQ3, to receive a modern remake. Well, in this case, it will be more like a faithful reimagination (faithful, yet still reimagination). At laest I heard that this new version will be more dynamic and less grindy than, say, PS1 version (I don't know how 3DS version of DQ7 handled these two elements of gameplay); all while preserving the original story and its flow. That, plus new graphics, should result in a really cool modernized version of another Dragon Quest game.

@Retro8bit Probably not, but I heard there's another improved version of DQ7 out there. I'd be willing to try that first. I was trying to complete the entire retro RPG library for years so I need to get back to this one again :D

If I had a fast forward on a PS1 emulator, an option I didn't use before for some reason if it's there, I'd possible try the original again. I want to see why you and others like it ;_; I've been wrong A LOT about games, and a few other things..

This year, I'm close to completing all mainline Dragon Quest games except for X. I started with XI, then went all the way back to 1 and 2 and on the NES and just kept marching, I'm fairly deep into 8 now.

It's pretty random right after I finished 1 and 2 on NES the remakes were announced like a week later, and I finished 7 last month and the remake was just announced here, I played it on PS1.

First of all, it seems clear to me not only are none of the DQ games really actually bad, well, that's not totally true, they're definitely on the weaker side of the JRPG spectrum, compared to Final Fantasy and Phantasy star and stuff, but anyway even DQ1 I think is playable and has value on the original NES even today. (Although again, compare like DQ7 to Vagrant Story or other Matsuno games and Matsuno just blows them away)

However, unlike those other franchises each game gets better than the previous one, without fail, which is really unique and why it's so fun to play them.

I'd recommend DQ7 on any platform as long as it has the same core as the PS1 original, specifically I put in 65 hours and NONE of it was filler, I really didn't even grind, you just fight that many battles over that many hours.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for example and other modern JRPGs often have lots of filler XC2 I think only has like 50 solid hours of gameplay, DQ7, 16 year older game, has a solid 15 more hours of content.

With this remake actually being able to see cool characters like Aira and stuff instead of just pixels it's probably a solid buy if you never played DQ7.

I actually feel this way about Phantasy Star 1 through 4. I find them to be not bad but a bit mediocre. At least DQ 3 and 2 had a lot of difficulty which sets them apart for me even today. None of these games are bad though. Different strokes different folks :D

Speaking of PS. The way ppl talk about PSO, it sounds like it was one of the greatest games of all time! Wish I played it during its heyday!

I have grown weary of remakes. Especially remakes of games that have already been remade
