Are the original novels always much closer to the real historical setting than the various historical battle shonens?

@RobertBobert it depends on the author, kingdom by Yasuhise Hara is semi fictional adaptation of "unification of china" historical text and how he writes the context in order to get to these key plot points that are in this text is done in very authentic way. And then when he adapts key plot points they are nearly 1 to 1 to that of the original source.

@RobertBobert Or the same thing with gintama by Hideaki Sorachi, even though it is alternate history since edo is invaded by aliens, most of the history that was presented is authentic and very accurate to that of Edo period of Japan.

I recommend this posts from reddit that details and explains better than I do:

@jacobPOL I never thought One Piece could be so historically authentic, given the intentional grotesqueness of its universe, but still. Did I mention that when I first saw the first couple of episodes of Gintama, I thought it was a Kenshin analog?

@RobertBobert One piece actually mirrors heavily our world a lot and that decision of art style that is used is briliant that capture beauty and mystery of the world but also harshness in reality like slavery/child slavery, SA, canibalism, poverty, war and it's consenquences, racism/discrimination, and also empty hatred and many more.

When it comes to gintama I would say it's very unique one of a kind series, it's hard to explain without spoilers.

I recommend this anylisis of gintama that has no spoilers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqqT8YwW3U0&t=

@RobertBobert Author have implemented even himself to the series both manga and anime in a form of gorilla with also him in the anime voicing his own character that is gorilla.

Or also here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-ARM_j5XbU when they inserted live action footage of Sorachi sensei in a form of gorilla and cast trying to talk to him during the rerun of the 2006 series during the hiatus after 2006 series run out of the source material.

@RobertBobert Sorry for comenting here I cannot comment on your profile.

Most arcs in one piece pre timeskip were usually 12 to then later 30 eps (altough most of these episodes are short form format being 5 minutes shorter in duration via implementing recap at the begining of the episodes before actual episode starts) to then later in post timeskip in the manga almost each individual arc is 50 to 100 to 150 chapters long arcs and in the anime 50 to 100+ episodes(albeit once again shorter in duration because of recap in order to avoid creating filler due to the risks associated with it while still having natural flow/pacing) and gintama most of the series is episodic with most episodes being self contained storylines while there are serious arcs they are usually 5 to 12 eps with the longest being final arc that is 24 eps/2 ovas/ and the final movie covering remainder of the manga.

I recommend this page of one piece that details the story arcs and sagas (parts) of the story.

@RobertBobert Also in gintama it is recommended that do not binge watch the series since most of it is self contained storylines but just watch at your own pace when you think is right or depending on the mood. Gintama also is not as long as it appears to since gintama 2006 also have used the formula that toei piece use by wasting first 5 minutes of the episodes to make actual episode 5 minutes shorter in duration than usual full length 23m episode in order to not create filler due to the risks associated with it when they used self awareness of gintama to explain what is filler, multiple risks associated with it and why they choose this alternative formula in order not to fall on these issues during when they were catching up to the source material before eventually switching to the seasonal at the end of 2006 series when they caught up to the manga.

I recommend this video that explains filler more in detail by gintama staff.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Gintama/comments/1mzx806/gintoki_explains_how_filler_works/

Also avoid the first two episodes since they are filler episodes created by gintama staff to celebrate gintama got adapted in to anime series with the 3rd episode adapting the actual first chapter of the manga.

Also here is filler list for one piece https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/one-piece

Here is the post of reddit summaries many drawings of Oda sensei whom he drawn outside manga https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/iv708n/one_piece_haters_oda_cant_draw_i_hate_his_art/

@RobertBobert Also before starting gintama, it is recommended to be one- experienced somewhat around classic weekly shonen jump era such as one piece, bleach, naruto, hunter x hunter, death note and similar.

Two- experience around some classic/legacy series such as lupin III, berserk, vinland saga etc.,

three - having a bit of knowledge surrounding Japanese history and it's culture

In order to understand hidden within meanings that are within gintama in which there are many of them in the series that actually are parodies of certain scenes of some series that requires knowledge of the series gintama parodies. Even I have not realized up until recently that some of the scenes were actually parodies of a certain series after reading more manga and watching more anime after completing gintama in early 2023. That is also one of the many reasons I love about this series that it has infinite replayability value by watching more anime/reading more manga depending on the era gintama was releasing, making you will be able to catch more refrences/hidden parodies gintama parodied after when rewatching some gintama episodes after reading more manga/watching more anime that makes it even more hilarious.

Also by the way if you want to watch gintama series, it is still has very strong comedy that is full of other different jokes and also this has yellow subtitles above which details the context behind these parodies.

I recommend this scene of gintama 2015 which mocked the politician of Japan as a form of apology due to the series being on 2 years hiatus after running out of source material in 2011 series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfPm3iaSIk4 even weekly shonen jump department was surprised about it https://x.com/jump_henshubu/status/585735419498778624 .
