Kaiju (giant monsters razing cities) is in like top 10 most popular trope in not only anime, but Japanese media overall. I hardly doubt they referenced currently airing anime specifically.

No, Kaiju in general just means giant monsters and it was in the manga aswell. This arc airing with Kaiju no 9 is just a coincidence.

@Sheol01 Yeah, I didn't know the exact dates it all began, but my point remains the same. Theme is old as fuck and it's not Kaiju No.8 exclusive like the OP thinks.
