Sometimes, and I guess particularly when we are at a younger age and are easier to shock, an anime series that we may otherwise consider mediocre or forgettable has this single scene or moment that is so haunting that we can still randomly think about it many years later. Do you have any experience (or experiences) like this?

The thing that was coming to my mind was Blood+, the moment

Hmmm yes I do. I remember back when I first watched Demon City Shinjuku, there was a part where one of the characters was going to be sacrificed. Didn't think much of it at the moment but for some reason I've always remembered that scene, and I remember watching it way back when I was like 12 years old or so.

RahXephon episode 19: "Blue Friend".
Always mentioning it, never spoiling it. Nothing's hit me harder than that, and it's still what I consider the best put-together sequence in anime.

I ditto the Blood+ Scene.
besides that uuuuh. It might be too recent to count (I watched it a couple months ago), but I had to pause and walk away from a scene in Megami Tensei where:

Not scary per say, But it's so... Bizarre and shocking it's burned into my memory, from an extremely mediocre and poorly paced OVA.

That scene where Ash finally rapes Pikachu in Pokemon, I think they deleted the scene from the later releases.

One of my earliest memories from when I was four is the cold opening to Cowboy Bebop EP5 - Ballad of Fallen Angels. Hearing someone get shot in a cartoon was not on my bingo card then. I rediscovered the show again 15 years later on Youtube clicking on that very same episode. I always wondered wtf it was from, and my mind was blown... Then Tank started playing and had a full-blown Winter Soldier moment damn near.

@JoeChip

Yes I heard about that one, from what's been told the animation was the most fluent the Pokémon series had ever seen up to that point.

Infinite Stratos while commonly known as the prime example of the dumbest MC ever

After learning the MC himself is acting like that on purpose to avoid war with foreign nations, it changed my perspective.

So I rewatched the anime (again) and discovered several key moments which really gets you to wonder how randomly deep even generic harem shows can get

@JoeChip Oh shit I remember that. Like I didn't watch it personally but it was all over the news back in the 90s, it even contributed to the Catholic Church calling Pokémon a work of the devil.

Geez Louis, I wonder who these people are who consider blood+ mediocre and forgettable.
For me it's the cherry blossoms seed incident in Ray The Animation. It made me scared of trees
