Old head type title; but being real with you, it never got better than the CRT TV.

Technology is great and I love it but man it gets hard to keep up with. To preface, I recently bought my first ever Smart TV - its got a remote that can put you on Netflix and Youtube in the click of a button, pretty cool right?

WRONG!

It's a buggy mess and the loading screens take forever - Not just for netflix but everything; I got KAYO for sports, especially since I like to watch AFL when the season starts but the loading times just to watch the India vs Australia test match! Damn it was long. On a more somber note, it basically makes my playstation 3 obsolete, something that I didn't think of when I bought it but now that I have bought it is making me sad! I stopped playing console games years ago and I was only using it for that very reason, to watch netflix. Now with this new smart TV, I don't need it. Of course that means I'm gonna go out of my way to play games on the PS3 now but you get my point.

All of this new technology and yet what we still really desire is what we had in the past.

I remember growing up that EVERY TV was a CRT, heck I remember having a Triniton back in the day and using it quite a lot. It became obselete fairly quick and I remember by around 2014-2015, my parents threw it out on the street never to be seen again (huge mistake btw)

Now I find myself missing that CRT more than ever. It doesnt help too that they are really expensive now as retro gaming is having this huge boom.

But hey, these are just my first world problems.

So do you also think about the past? Is technology something you find hard to keep up with? Has BIG TECH taken it too far!?

I wish I got to experience the apparent glory that was a plasma screen television. I had friends and family who had them, but I stuck with CRTs until like 2012, when I kinda just stopped using TVs for much of anything. I think at around 2014 I just dropped it off at a Savers, without getting anything to replace it.

@DesuMaiden unironically true - TV is dead but a tv is an essential in a mans home for me.

probably because I grew up watching friday night footy on a tv and now I can't watch sports on a computer without feeling something is off! Also how can you have a movie night without a TV- imagine cramping around 20inch monitor for a movie night...

I use my 42" TV as a computer screen. I don't watch any regular TV shows anymore.

@Daviljoe193 yeah plasma was great - part of the reason we threw out the CRT was because we bought a plasma. Objectively great TV's and they could run seventh generation consoles amazingly, way better than our CRT could.

But I must admit part of the appeal from a CRT is its charm. TBH its a shame we didn't realise it sooner that I would start missing CRT's.

If that was the case I would have gone to savers and taken your CRT for you...

HD had its moment back in 2008 when I got a projector and had thr wow moment seeing the clarity and high resolution display but after the novelty wore off I just felt like something was missing.
HDTVs feel sterile and soulless.

One thing I always wondered is HDTVs didn’t take off yet and the 7th gen consoles were made for SD, could the graphics and design of the games have been vastly more impressive?

I still use a CRT btw, not just for games but 00s anime looks great on it too.

@Cybercat2000 oh 100%, HD could never capture the timeless retro aesthetic of the interlacing on a CRT. Especially for 5th and 6th generation consoles.

So long as video games are concerned, I use new and old stuff alike. Still have my CRT along with my old Nintendo consoles. I never really had any problem with newer technology. But I've yet to get a 4k TV. I'll only probably buy one if the Switch 2 can handle 4k.

@fleurbleue oh wow I didn't even know that there was a switch 2 coming out. Hoping that it doesn't go through the same trials and tribulations that the Wii U did...

I think objectively these days the best way to play consoles like the switch are on emulators (unless you're against that sort of thing) - Probably the best experience to play them considering how poorly optimised switch games are.

I played the Pokemons Legends Arceus game at a friends house which was fine, but I was just suprised at how bad the graphics were. I remember better looking graphics on the gamecube and N64 with like SM64 and Sunshine.

That being said, so long as it doesn't run the course of the Wii U, with better marketing, it should be fine. Especially with Nintendo pumping out the same cycle of Fire Emblem, Mario and Pokemon to drip feed their fans.

There's plenty bad about CRTs.
- size
- lack of compatibility with modern hardware
- do not support high resolutions and high refresh rates (there were a few models that did, but they are rare and impossible to find nowadays)
- most of them produced buzzing sound, especially during bright scenes
- strobing nature of the image is very unhealthy for the eyes and can cause headaches
- flickering can be still noticable even if the CRT monitor runs at 75Hz (very few ran at higher frequencies)
- image gets discolored if you have other badly shielded electronical equipment (like speakers) near the CRT
- color gamut of modern OLEDs is wider than in CRTs
- black levels in modern OLEDs are better too
- as CRTs age, they lose focus, they develop geometry issues, they lose color accuracy, they can develop burn-in, caps need replacement which isn't something an average user will be able to diagnose and repair

CRTs are only useful nowadays when paired with old low-resolution games due to how CRTs blend together pixels to make low-res content look less pixelated. Some older games were created with this effect in mind to create gradients of colors using only 2 colors. This is the only area where you need a CRT to get the best experience.
Other "small wins" of CRTs are:
- 0ms response times (modern displays running at 60hz have 8ms delay, which is barely noticable for a seasoned player; modern displays running at higher frequencies lower this delay to 2-4ms which is pretty much not noticable)
- less motion blur (but modern OLEDs have gotten very close to CRT levels)

No it's not. The TV being smart is an anti-feature.
I bought one too, they don't sell non-smart TVs anymore after all, but I never actually connected it to the internet.
I just plugged it into my PC, and use the motion interpolation feature, because usually it does a really good job of making the image not a laggy mess.
Also gamed on it a little, but I prefer to play on mouse and keyboard.

So long as they don't call it the Switch U they should be fine... One leak said the console is to literally be named the Switch 2. We still don't if it's true but I sure hope it is. It is the only appellation that won't make things confusing for everyone.

Yes, the Pokémon games on Switch are blatantly bad looking, but also the worse looking games on the console. Mainly because The Pokémon Company really like money and really hate the efforts and time required to make actual great games. Of course the Switch is far from a powerhouse but take a look at Xenoblade 3 or Tears of the Kingdom and you will see it's still not that bad.

what i like about crt monitors is that they do not care about resolutions, so even a low resolution like 360p will look good in crt monitors in full screen

I like the heavy static buildup CRTs cause.

I used to have a black & white TV my parents had sitting around i sometimes watched cartoons on. I have no idea how old it was but i miss it being on hand just for being cool for being different. I wouldnt have a use for it now though so i dont so much miss that one.

Plasma screens are known for image burn in. They dont actually look that great id say. In fact many people can see the scan lines on plasma tvs but only certain ones can so you have to be special to see them

Technological progress is a myth anyways. It is not like technology fixes any of the fundamental issues. And no technology is not rapidly "progressing" in the 2020s. It is actually getting much and much worse. The best computers and electronic gadgets were made 10 to 15 years ago. It has all been going downhill ever since.

@Mirania In the states and other places, sure. But in Australia where I live it's a desert and there aren't any Oasis's nearby. The easiest way is Ebay but again, shipping is egregious, as you can imagine.

Best place is really like Facebook Marketplace, and usually they get snagged quick if its good quality.

Ah, I see. I feel like some communities tossed more of them than others. A lot of thrift stores just throw them in the dumpster without realizing there is a demand for them.

@Mirania Yeah either that or all of them get taken away by people who know its value. Thats why they can upcharge so much for it here especially. I was talking to a guy who offered his 2004 24" Sony Triniton and he was asking for 850!

When a new technology appears, it often has some demerit. But the weak points will be solved over time. This is an example of "analog + CRT" and "digital + LCD" for test instruments.

Though I'm not sure what you mean about the slowness of Netflix, if you are talking about the delay of digital TV, it comes from error corrections. Not a problem of renderers.

Being said that, I can understand your feelings. I also have nostalgia for antiques sometimes.
