now, I'm not one of those potatoes who says hot take, and then proceeds to say a the most lukewarm take possible.

nor am I one of those cheeseburgers who leaves the take without any good reason to go with it.

I actually have a point to make here:

At the time of writing this I am 8 episodes into this.

The original suffered massively in the second half. and while a lot of people don't agree with that, it is undeniable that a lot of people would beg the differ.

and most of the problems that people have with this show, come from one thing. the author is way too try hard, but is not good enough to pull off some of the things he is attempting, specially when it comes to the characters.

the way every character constantly changes motivation and sides, can technically work if done perfectly by a one of a kind author, but this guy just ain't that good.

there is a reason the most favourited characters in the show are the simple ones. some of the characters of the show, in concept would be some of the most complex characters in all of anime if the author could pull them off, but of fucking course they can't. that's not an easy thing to do.

this show was at it's best, when it kept things simple. episode 2 (kage's backstory) was a perfect example.

Miranjo started as a perfect mysterious antagonist, and created a shit ton of intrigue in the first half. but the more we learned about her, the worse she became, until the complete clusterfuck that was the resolution to her arc, which even the hardcore fans of the show didn't like.

if you check imdb it's the lowest rated episode in the entire main series.

because the main series is, well, the main series, it obviously has a lot of high stake moments.

this side story however, doesn't, instead it has something even better.

the stories here are:

1. simple side stories that don't really matter
2. backstories that flesh out the characters more
3.  both of those at the same time

so what does that do?

not only does this spin off avoid all the problems of the original by keeping things simple, it also goes out of it's way to improve upon some of the weak aspects of the original.

the animation is just as, or at least close to just as good. and the soundtrack is mostly the same.

now, all that said, I get why overall this has a lower rating. if you love the original, to death, this would be just some cool side stories to you.

but why the fuck is the difference this massive?

listen, I don't think the score this has is even unfair, but relative to the original, you would think this is absolutely terrible and a complete disappointment. it was advertised as some side stories, and it more than delivered by also having some plot relevant stuff. and it's only watched by the people who at least somewhat liked the original.

so a 1.3 difference in score is absurd.

and as I said, I think it's actually better.

so.... what are your thoughts on this... I'm pretty interested to know!

Yes, I came to that conclusion maybe half way through this spin off.

While the original was underwhelming from the get go, only to further disappoint viewers after the half way mark, this anime stayed inside it's comfort zone with the content, they've kept it safe with the SOL elements and the fleshing out of side characters with mini stories, and it was better for it. Makes for better world building and immersion for what you're watching. Also, obviously not as much tears, which the original took to absurd levels.

I think if you're weren't anticipating such a show and thought it was going to be a developing sort of season with progression (which is completely on you), you could be disappointed by this and find it less enjoyable.

I said it when it was airing, but it's similar to the Slime Diaries IMO, which was also immensely entertaining.

I don't really think we should compare, because it's main purpose was to fill and explain other plot threads.

I agree that the difference in scores shouldn't be this massive but I still enjoyed the original a bit more. Can't wait to see what the movie will offer.

I don't agree it's better, but it's definitely way too underrated for the quality and great storytelling it's given to this series.

It had strong episodes, and also really bad episodes. Considering that mixbag of scores, I can't say its better.

Both trash. I can't believe Wit studio fell off this hard
Imagine the wit studio who produced the greatest AOT and Vinland
Now is reduced to work on garbages like Ousama 🤡 and sxf 😂

now, don't get me wrong, I don't think ousama ranking is anywhere near as good as aot, and specially not vinland.

spy x family, I isn't on par with them either.

but that has nothing to do with wit, it's because of the source material.

as far as how well wit did with what they were given, I would actually say ranking of kings has better production than both vinland and attack on titan. the show looks incredible. and you have to blind to say otherwise.

but yes, I am also waiting for wit to get another truly great source.

I don't think it's better, but I also don't think it's far worse. Last episode definitely improved on the season as a whole quite a bit.
