I wasn't sure where to put this thread so I just assumed this would be a good place.

So, I recently bought a blue snowball microphone. Of course, excited in my new investment I planned on using it to make video anime reviews. Discussions, analyzations, and others videos of that nature. I had constantly rehearsed and spoken to myself like a mad man while doing my day-to-day activities (Cleaning the house, washing the dishes, taking a shower ect) prior to my getting the mic.

Now that I've gathered the courage to start recording I can't seem to make something decent. I record for 10 or so minutes. Go back, review the audio and it just sounds... Wrong. Maybe it's my voice, but I feel like it's more the way I convey my thoughts. Everything feels incoherent, but I digress.

I believe the obvious reason for this is that I don't script my recordings and I basically just hit record and start speaking.

Thanks for hearing my bullshit, onto my actual question. Does anyone here have experience with this? Script-writing and recording? Perhaps this is just something I'm not used to and more recording tests will break the strange feeling. At least I hope that's the case but if it's something else, anything else. I'm going to address it. If any advice could be given it would be greatly appreciated.

Script writing?

*ahem* It's a review.
Just need to find out how to quote this every time so I can dodge the stupid 30-character limit.

Not all of us have the testosterone I guess.

I'd say a script isn't what you're lacking but it's always good to have some sort of outline of what you're doing.
Obviously you wouldn't want to end up sounding too rehearsed.

Stop wanting a script and take a deep breath before your reviews, it'll calm you down and keep on reviewing, practice brings on confidence.

1. do you have a pop filter
2. writing outlines helps
3. I have no experience what so ever.
4. I have no idea how bad you are, so I assume that you could be making a big deal out of nothing.
5. you can use audacity to level out background noise... I haven't played with it that much because it doesn't get along with Linux mint.
6. you can also use audacity to record audio maybe try messing with the setting until it sounds better.

I have previous experience with this.

1. Drink water, not anything else. Stay away from dairy.
2. If you are hungry, go for something like an apple. Flush mouth with water.
3. Don't rush.
4. Have about 20-30 seconds of silence prior to, and after, you record. Use these as samples for noise cancelling during editing.
5. Have a script. Unless you're extremely confident, a script helps you keep to time constraints and stop you going off track.
6. Oh yeah, buy a pop filter.

I realize that but through my "rehearsals" I had always thought I gave my points and thoughts fairly well, so much so that it could be confused as being scripted (minus the "uhhhm's" and "oohhhh's") I guess you could say I figured it'd be as easy and taking my ramblings and recreating them in front of a microphone. But apparently that's not the case.

I don't think you necessarily need a script but you need to have an outline or good idea of what you're going to say. If you say a lot of things like um.. and uh... then you should probably write some stuff down and go over it in a few times. I guarantee most people don't record things in one take. I used to record a lot of hip-hop songs and when you record your voice you have to overdo it a bit for it to sound like what you think it sounds like in your head. Soft background music can help too.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try an outline.

I have a tendency to start speaking fast when I 'get into' a role or a rant. Or whatever you'd like to call it. And I do have a pop filter.

1. Yes
2. I'm not exactly sure what an 'outline' is, though I'm guessing it's when you write down specific ideas to talk about as opposed to a script of the entire thing.
5. My mic does all background blocking fairly well.
6. I've tried this.

If you sound too rehearsed then the audio becomes unsatisfactory bullshit.

Focus on sounding like yourself, like you're talking to a friend, the way YOU would.

Best advice I can give. Can't tell you how many people Ive immediately stopped listening to because they sound rehearsed, unnatural, and cringe-worthy.
☕ Truth be told, I'm quite proud of my house blend. To attain my flavor and fragrance, I use five different types of coffee beans. ☕

You sound fine, just a little tired. If you aren't used to recording, at first, your voice won't sound like what you think it's supposed to sound llike. That's normal.

I use a script for when I'm recording. A lot of it is just practice and getting the tone right. You can start to sound really unnatural and weird at the slightest off-sounding word, so just taking and retaking a recording until you have a tone that you like is all you can do. If it still doesn't sound right after several takes, I usually look into revising my script because the wording itself is probably too unnatural. I completely rewrote 80% of one of my scripts once because I realized that a lot of it was too convoluted and rambling after recording. It made a big difference to me.

Also as John mentioned, the first time you start doing this, hearing your own voice recorded back to you will likely sound unnatural to you at first no matter what. You've got to get comfortable with your own voice because it sounds different when played back through your computer.

Not being sarcastic at all. I was just checking if you had a lisp or stutter. You have a solid voice.

2.it is a summery of what you are going to say. like:
1. the plot is lacking
2. the character are quite round (good development)
3. the animation is terrible
Then you would elaborate why the plot is lacking and how the character are good, and how that the animation is terrible.
5.the audio sound really good, but I can still hear some background noise, yea I got studio monitors, so I can say that.

I could probably use the remove noise function in audacity. But that's probably the best I could do sadly.

So, I suppose I'm just going to have to try and script or write an outline and re-record until I'm content or I grow used to my voice and how I present myself, thanks MAL. This actually helped out alot.

It sounds like you need a windscreen (background static, it could just be your recording levels). Also, you were a bit monotone so you should a try to focus a bit on inflections.

Every professional writes a rough script, you don't have to stick to it, it's there for confidence as well as being able to know what to say.
