On the streets it's a bad idea unless you are in Japan, anywhere else, it's just a bad idea regardless.

I bet even in Japan it'd be a bad idea.

OT: No.

In most public places it's a bad idea but it may be ok, if your costume isn't ero to walk around the streets of Osaka or Akihabara in one. You'd get strange looks but it's not as bad as doing it in the US or EU.

Nope, waste of time and I don't want any more attention towards me than there needs to be.

Not that I've been there, but isn't it quite common with cosplayers in towns such as Akihabara?

...Probably depends on the costume.

I mean, if you play it off right, no one would look twice at a lot of stuff. I walked around in a jedi robe for months, never had any trouble, got a few compliments actually.

if they were a character that was simple(not a lot of detail to the costume)

possibly

Most of my favorite character would have to be homemade.

To each his own but why would you do that. It's nice to be passionate about something but consider the ramifications of doing it first.

I wear my Salaryman Kintaro cosplay most times I'm out in public. If anyone bothers to say anything at all, it's always complimentary.

There's a guy at work I suspect is cosplaying Yotsuya from Maison Ikkoku, but I'm not certain.

As only one person, perhaps an odd idea but no more than being the one guy walking around in black, eye shadow, black nails and pretty much full on goth. However if your looking for reaction, id say get a few friends and enter the mall at once :D

Yes in some parts of Tokyo it's fine.. i wouldn't say extremely common, but in akihabara you can get away with it. also in harajuku junction you would look like the normal one if cosplay is all you doing. umm, yoyogi park there is some kind os subcultural freak meet up every second day.. so theres plenty of strange looking character there.. dont think anyone would bat an eye. Walking through Shibuya I have seen some cosplayers.. but there is millions of people going through there every day so I wouldn't say it's common

Depends on the costume and where I'm going.

If heading to a con or photoshoot, I don't see an issue with it. But some areas of Sydney you really don't want to be in anything deemed weird AT ALL so on a random day, no.

I might, MIGHT, cosplay at a con. But I wouldn't go as some shitty shounen character. I'd probably go as Greed or Okabe.

I know a guy who wears a DBZ tank top to the gym. I want one so badly.
That is probably the only anime related clothing i'd wear.

Like some others said it depends what it is, how much it stands out, and how much you can pull it off. If you're wearing it like it's no big deal to you and are at least somewhat attractive, it will be fine. You can do it with a bunch of friends. I forgot their names, but there's a couple of groups in NYC that just go out in the city dressed up in Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat outfits. For the MK people they've played the MK theme and danced all over the city multiple times. It's a huge group of people also so that helps.

Just how bad of a costume are we talking about here?
I could see myself in some outfits for some occasions, but just randomly prob not.

My parents are part of a medieval society though so I'm very used to wearing medieval outfits for those kinds of conventions at least, never done anime cosplay though.

It depends on what costume. If it's something like casual like that of L's attire, then I don't mind (except I wont walk barefooted), or Kira's attire. uuuhhmmm.. The rest like ninja attire, or whatever it is so unnatural, never.
