I don't think she actually expects him to keep that promise. And of course there's going to be a twist when they find the person.

Judai acting way too selfish, but I like the start of his character development.

How so? When he challenged Scarr in this episode, he specifically thought that he wanted to protect his friends because he knew that losing would mean dying, hence why he volunteered to duel. That doesn't seem selfish to me.

On the other hand, I do wish that Asuka, Fubuki, or any other character had dueled Scarr instead. I mean this would've been a great time for the other characters to pull their weight. At least we got some foreshadowing for Jim's future purpose after he saw the comet.

There's a fine difference between being a selfish person and acting selfish. It's not as simple as a matter of black and white. His Johan focus and the fact that he's putting everything on himself due to his feelings of guilt is a selfish desire that comes with shades of grey. He obviously still cares for his friends and protects them, provided he can afford it. Alas, he keeps rushing into danger despite the warnings of his dear friends. The others accompanied him on their own accord, that's true, but Judai's brashness ultimately endangered everyone.

Or in other words, acting irresponsible as part of a group is selfish.
