I kind of feel like he probably never really made an effort to be "gentlemanly" before . . . So guessing that he is trying pretty hard here, funny that Sarah interprets it as him doing something that comes natural to him, and tries not to think it means something.

He was never really in a proper relationship. He was just used when he was "dating" as an adult. The trauma he experienced growing up has made him unable to refuse when certain women assault him. He was not an active participant, he was always waiting for it to be over. That is not consentual or a relationship. Now there were probably women who had actual interest in him as a person but he was to damaged to notice. I doubt there were many of those because most of the women he interacted with were in lust with him. They didn't give a damn about the person. "Gentlemanly" gestures weren't necessary because they didn't deserve it.

Sara treats him like a human being and not a piece of meat or an object to abuse. It's understandable why he has feelings for her and tries his best to treat her well.
