This had to be hands-down the worst written episode of Kenshin I've seen. Even though he was obviously a gifted and ambitious kendo student from the beginning, the only swordsman the guy ever aspired to best was a masked thug he crossed in an alley as a kid? They expect us to believe that the girl waited by the riverbank for 20 years for him to return from his training, even though they'd barely met and he didn't even say hello to her when they first met? Also, after 20 years of honing his swordsmanship, how did he become the town fishing expert? Just seems like a convenient but completely bizarre excuse for Kenshin to meet him. None of it made any logical sense. Episode 64 is way better, and it's a straight up ripoff of My Fair Lady.

That awkward moment when a stranger suddenly tells you his cheesy life story.

The weird pond/fireflies bit reminded me of Mushishi.

He aspired to be like the guy who he thought was an amazing swordsman, based on the fight he witnessed. They had not "barely met," he mentions that time passed, enough so that he came to accept her feelings and feel the same way towards her. She was not literally by the riverbank every second for 20 years, but she went there every day. He mentioned that his story was from several decades ago. If one were to do nothing but fish for several decades, one would hopefully get pretty good at it. Convenient? Yes. Bizarre? Hardly.

Interesting story, nice moral to take away from it for Kenshin, and all in all a grood episode imo.

No, bro, just no.

I thought this episode was pretty boring at first, but once it hit its peak... damn, I was so moved. What a tragic, touching, beautiful story.

Well this was a depressing episode, in the good way.

And still no Kaoru/Kenshin kiss, sigh.

Compared to the awesomeness of the Shishiou arc this side story was meh at best. Almost felt like filler material

Despite being filler this episode was actually pretty good, definitely on par with the cannon.

Fisher man: "It is likely that we'll never meet again".

Anyone who thought this was filler could've guess that. Worst episode.

If some lady waits around by some tree for twenty years, then yeah I guess it makes sense when she died she would haunt that same place as a ghost until the return of the person she awaits.
