Is the western concept of "seasons" even applicable to anime?

I've told that in the past I got confused, as someone who only watches anime, as to why people referred to TV series not being renewed for new season as "being cancelled".
For anime, you don't take new seasons "for granted", nor is any anime entitled to them.
It only made sense to me when I learned that American TV Series are made to aired indefinitely... which appears, for me, as a recipy for disaster.
Indeed, even back when LOST was first airing, even people like Stephen King were saying "PLEASE, DON'T TURN INTO SLOP LIKE MOST DO", and it wasn't until "The Sopranos" that TV series began to be respected like movies were.

But if that's the case... isn't the concept of "seasons" not applicable to anime?
I can't recall a single anime which uses the word "Season" in it's official JP name (It's logo).
For long-running shounen, they're simply adaptations, either continuous or in batches, of a continuous source material.

It feels like trying to force a foreign concept, like when I read a guy saying that Bleach had 16 seasons, or when NETFLIX decided to divide Little Witch Academia into two halves (When it originally aired continuously) and call the second "Season 2".

anime doesn't care about your spring premieres and fall finales. Japan said, “We will air a beach episode in December if we feel like it. Now hold this sakura petal and cry.”

mate, we already had this discussion.

or in batches

and what would you call such a batch of episodes?

the word "season" in the context of a TV show means a certain series of episodes. that's it. that's all it is.

does anime have series' of episodes that are airing one after the other without any major delay between them? well, that's what we call a season in American English. the Brits call it a "series" because, get this: it's a SERIES OF EPISODES.

and just because Japan doesn't use that word doesn't mean the word isn't applicable. that said:

I can't recall a single anime which uses the word "Season" in it's official JP name (It's logo).

〈物語〉シリーズ セカンドシーズン

and yes, retroactiviely trying to use the concept of seasons on long running shows when they never had any major breaks in their broadcast is silly, because that's not the definition of the word. but modern anime does get released in destinct seasons.

they have with newer anime but older anime tend to just run forever with no breaks, that's why they had such long stretches of filler arcs and things like recap episodes.

A lot of it had to do with timeslots, the japanese tv schedule just ran things indefinitely till they ended and those studios didn't want to lose their premium time slots
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Yes, the concept of seasons is applicable to anime. If anything, it's the concept of cancelation that isn't applicable to anime in the same way that it is for western TV.

Of course, some stuff does get canceled, like that Yuri on Ice movie, but as far as western media is concerned, basically, a show is either renewed for more seasons, or it's canceled, no in-between. For anime, a new season not being greenlit doesn't mean that the show is canceled, and it doesn't mean a new season won't eventually be greenlit, it just means that a new season of that specific show isn't currently a priority for the production company.

No, anime does not go shit after the third season because it gets free to move channels. (ps: syndication, anime is always syndicated without a 3 season cooldown)

genshiken 2 and Genshiken 2nd
Dragon ball Z

Monogatari 2nd season... In katakana. セカンドシーズン

There are different definitions of the term "season" and if you go by "production cycle" the anime one matches the western concept.

This is kind of off topic, but I was surprised to learn lately that over in Europe they don't call it seasons, but series instead.
