Have you ever discovered that someone you thought was smart was actually not that smart?

@PeripheralVision was totally luring me into making this thread, so here we are (he probably wanted you all to know he's actually dumb). Has there ever been anyone, either in real life or online, whom you initially thought was smart only to later realize they weren't smart at all? Or are your first impressions always accurate?

People smart in one thing may not be that smart in another thing, or sometimes the person simply not yet exposed to enough information to make smart conclusion or judgement. There maybe reasons for example someone limit themselves to certain information and skills only, and reject information and skills that they think not really interesting for him or not useful for him. In a nutshell, I don't think it is wise to judge a person entirely as a dumb or smart person

Being smart and thinking about someone being smart is completely different and many people fall for that. All it takes to blindly guess of someone high knowledge is good rhethoric, being eloquent, some accessories and proper clothing and all of that can be memorised and prepared.
Which is why I don't make a final opinion untill I get to know someone a little bit better and hear/see their action, what they think about certain stuff, how they behave etc.

So in nutshell I restrict myself from making first impressions about someones personality or knowledge held, I only held them into 2 basics measures - Positive or Negative depedning how good or bad I feel while having a conversation with someone.

Not everyone can know everything.

People say I'm dumb but in certain fields I feel I'm incredibly smart, just not in anything profitable so it is considered useless knowledge

So basically very few people are low IQ troglodytes

when I was learning English, I watched a lot of political and historical content on Youtube which I can now see for the absolute trash it is. The vast majority of the creators don't cite sources and don't read up about the subject they are talking about and there is so few people whose goal is to spread information rather than convince you of their ideology. I also often see people cite irrelevant stuff to claim legitimacy. It's an evolution of pop history but at the same time I can't blame people who fall into it. It's a lot easier to get attention of people who are uneducated in a topic by encapsulating historical and political events into some grand narrative. It's also a lot easier to believe that the world is controlled by Jews, fascists, marxists, Blackrock and that everyone who has an opposing position is a Russian/American/Chinese/Iranian/Israeli spy.

…I mean, Fleur sounds similar to “floor”, hence why I thought it meant floor in French instead of flower. Of course I did not think it literally meant floor, I just thought what it literally translated too. I am a hot-blooded and sexy American. The only French I speak is French kissing.

@PeripheralVision Oh no, now I feel bad that you're so seriously trying to explain the whole thing to defend yourself.

Wait, does that mean you actually didn't want me to make this thread? 🤔

Everyone has intellectual weaknesses. I know people that are geniuses at their specialized knowledge, way beyond what I can comprehend and complete buffoons on other topics, they must speak on.

It's common as dog bites man. But for me it's more about man bites dog
So I've discovered that someone i thought was funny and Silly, is actually really smart with very high iq. his posts on current events and future events topics make lots of sense.
I think his user name is desumaiden.

I only judge someone when they've shown their capabilities on fields where it requires you to think fast, problem-solve and adapt

A good example was when I devised a strat for a random-generated puzzle for our 5-man-team to get a top score- 1 got it at 1st try, 2 at the 3rd try, while the other 1 couldn't get it even at 10th try. He got angry saying we were stupid and left. Mind you, he had the most academic achievements out of us.

We switched him with another and she got it at 2nd try- then we got top score once we were synchronized. I consider the one who got it at 1st try to be very intelligent and I've known him for years, while the one who had the most academic achievement to be the least intelligent.

Judging someone based on difference of beliefs, academic background or how they portray themselves online "with the help of google" is a stupid metric to measure intelligence.

A good example:

My freshman year of undergrad, one of my fellow physics majors was this tall guy who wore tweed jackets, talked about Feynman and "elegance" all the time, and put off this physicist air. I remember seeking him out to do homework together, since I figured he was smart. His thinking was a giant, incoherent jumble, and when I saw that he was violating Newton's Third Law with his nonsense, I think I just up and left. He bombed the first midterm. He did get better at it over the four years of undergrad, and managed to get into grad school, but he remained a bumbling snot. It turns out that blathering like Neil deGrasse Tyson does not make one good at physics. Tyson himself wasn't that good at it; he wrote maybe 10 papers, only like two of which were first-author. This is why he became an entertainer instead. (Sagan, meanwhile, with his similarly stupid philosophizing, wrote at least 100.)

I love him who is ashamed when the dice fall in his favour and who then asks: Am I then a cheat? – for he wants to perish.

@auroraloose Oh Aurora, I'll do homework with you, and I'll let you know when I am being genuine and when I am (erotically) cosplaying as a physicist. On topic, it is funny because people think I am better at my coursework than I actually am. :/ There are things I like to think I am smart at, but my actual day job is not one of them.

not really. i have changed what i value in conversation and shift towards that, though. for ex., when someone only regurgitates quotes but never adds their own response, i get bored. i would have once been impressed by what seems like a vast amt of knowledge but now i wonder if they are actually engaging with the material or if they are just collecting discrete corners of ideas like pokemon cards. at best, this prevents any new ideas from forming. at worst, it leads to very annoying misinterpretations.

i also have been disappointed when i realize people i used to respect are more comfortable being wrong than i would be, but that also isn't "being dumb" really. it's possibly worse lol

I once found out someone was incredibly dumb after thinking they were relatively intelligent for several years, so dumb that the revelation was shocking and took a bit to get over.

Another hero? Oh, please!
You're a god-damn philistine.

Sure, I think it comes down to how a person presents themselves and also how much you know on what they are talking about.

Generally no but the biggest misjudgement I made was Rishi Sunak; thought as a Chancellor he sounded well spoken and talked sense. When he became Prime Minister however he was like a deer in headlights with the social skills of a harem protagonist in other words spineless. Probably says more about his character than intellect but just goes to show there are different kinds of intelligence...

On the whole, if you listen carefully and attempt to challenge/scrutinize a person you can normally separate the intelligent folk from the pretenders. I will say there are times where a person's apparent intellect can drop dramatically if you take them outside their field of knowledge. That can be a jarring experience.

I thought my parents were smart until they started getting some bad advice. I don't want to totally blame them though, because I know how desperate they were and how getting any help or advice on the stuff we were involved was almost impossible. There's no guidebook for stuff like that, shame we couldn't have written one instead though.

nah my starting point is that everyone is average but pretending to be smarter or dumber depending on the context so normally i just get disappointed by extremely stupid people
