What do you think makes an anime 'boring'?

There’s a bunch of factors that can make an anime boring( slow pacing, overused tropes or predictable storylines... blah blah), and I assume everyone has their own. For me, for ex, when a show only has male characters and no female cast, I tend to find those types of shows boring to watch. So, what factors exactly makes an anime boring for you?

Hmm like when some event is stretched over multiple episodes when it really doesn't need to be, or when literally nothing happens in an episode and there's no development whatsoever. I think a mix of these three elements is what bores me.

Also, very much similar to the OP is that I don't really like watching an all female cast or an all male cast. Sometimes it's alright but most of the time it gets boring and its dropped.

Slow pacing and dialogue lines that doesn't go anywhere, but i have also noticed that anime that wastes a lot of early episodes introducing too many characters are boring for me too.

fights that stretch out for multiple episodes and I'm not talking about 2 eps or even 3 I mean more - I'm talking about Saint Seiya, Bastard part 2 [the fight with Abigail] and I'm pretty sure Bleach in Espada arc had some of them too, of course it depends, but god damn, I'm the most chill person when it comes to anime bullshit, but sometimes I just can't XDDD

- too much exposition dump in the first episode, later on it's fine but first and foremost you have to make me want to care about what's going on
- too many main characters introduced in the first episode, they just become a list of names I instantly forget
- long sequences with no dialogues, no soundtrack and barely any animation for the sake of being artsy

I guess it's mostly a consequence of not caring for both the story and the characters.

Take Made in Abyss for example. Aside from the amazing background art the first part didn't have a lot of things that made me care. It reminded me of my favorite game called Sekaijuu no Meikyuu, which is why I stuck with it and like I said the art was very pretty too look at. But I felt no attachment to any of the characters. Whether they lived or died, I couldn't care less.

It wasn't until Nanachi was introduced that I started to care. For Nanachi. And once I cared everything became a lot more fun.

This is also the reason why I strongly dislike episode long flashbacks. I don't care about all this stuff that already happened. I want things to move forward. If you want to tell so much about past events make a prequel.

It's boring only if it satisfies more than one of these:

- uneventful episodes
- stagnant characters
- Insisting its central theme way too much

If one tries to binge watch an entire Anime that only consist of around 12 to 24 episode then find themselves falling asleep while watching it, it's safe to say that the person is bored. lol

When it comes to watching something new alone, even if I am extremely exhausted, feel over worked, or even suffer from general fatigue due to how my day went, if there is something new that keeps me interested I will generally stay wide awake and extremely engaged when consuming it. Even If I end up pausing an Anime half way through to continue finishing it another day.

There is no specific set criteria to define what makes something boring when it comes to watch what an anime has to offer. Some people might get bored and lose interest in an Anime due to the most extremely petty reasons such as finding just one characters voice annoying to listen to, to even an Anime not having one boob shot or panty scene in it. lol Some people might even get bored of an Anime due to the fact there might be too much sexual fanservice or even if an Anime just takes itself way too serious to watch or even a lack of seriousness. Some might just get bored because it wasn't produced for those who have ADHD. lol I have even heard from people I know in real life in the past commonly think some Anime was just boring due to not having even one intense action scene in it.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bored, they might just be exhausted. Being tired and being bored aren’t the same thing. But I get what you’re saying, overconsumption can definitely lead to Boredness.

These are more about external factors that can make you feel exhausted more easily, but they’re not really about the anime itself or boredom.

I would think after reading my next paragraph you would get the idea that being tired wouldn't be the underlining issue. Maybe I should have made that more clear. I have seen people watch something who were not tired at all, jacked up on something like 4 cans of Redbull, and still fall sleep watching something on TV. lol They even said they were just bored.

@ColourWheel Yeah, like I said, overconsumption can lead to boredom. You gave an example that supports your point, but I can also say I know someone who was jacked up on 4 cans of Redbull and fell asleep because they were tired. Boredom and exhaustion are pretty similar, but they’re not the same, that’s just the point I was trying to make.

For me it'd be these:

- Repetitiveness
Not necessarily the use of a formula or tropes on their own, but if you don't get creative with how you utilize those elements and every episode feels like a carbon copy of eachother zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

- Dragged out dialogue
If the characters spend more than half an episode in the same room just talking to eachother and nothing else i will go insane! There's so many more interesting ways to lay out information than this

- Flat cardboard cutout characters
Like with my first point, i don't have a problem with stereotypes on their own, but if the characters are walking stereotypes ripped off from wikipedia, congratulations on successfully killing your series! I'm already way more drawn to stories which go indepth with character analysis, developement, pshyche exploration, needless to say the exact opposite is a big turn off

- Too much romance
As you can see i'm quite fond of the romantic genre haha
I don't hate romance and do find it cute when characters get together, but i'll quickly lose interest if there's nothing else going on around it

Bad pacing and dragged out content. Bad characters. Bad plot. Bad use of Ost and animation.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Hardly any anime shows are really that exciting to watch. There is hardly any enjoyable "plot" in anime. Anime is only worth watching for the flashy visuals. I don't watch anime for the plot. I watch anime for the detailed animations TBH.

Unoriginality. Yes, a show doesn't have to be original, but that's usually the biggest red flag for me.

If not originality, a show has to offer something I can latch on to and remember it by. The most boring shows are the ones that I struggle to say anything about, whether it's positive or negative.

I found that Tenshi no Tamago only works on a large screen with a proper sound system.
Watched on a smaller screen and/or without a real subwoofer it just falls flat and is lulling one into sleep.

But damn is it ever an experience if you got yourself a large screen and proper sound. It becomes mesmerizing and endlessly rewatchable.

I usually find anime boring if it has:

  • A nonsensical or confusing plot (Another)
  • No actual substance (My Neighbor Totoro)
  • Slow pacing (Shinsekai Yori)
  • Unlikable characters that the anime wants you to like (OreImo)
  • Literally just a recap of events that have happened already as if I hadn't already seen them (The Odd Taxi Movie)

Only Kanto & to a lesser extent Orange Islandswas. Starting with Johto, the series started following a strict formula.

Why are you watching Pokemon of all things for fanservice? That's not a focus of the series.

Again, only in season 1. Guns don't show up in the series at all past Kanto.

Really, because it seems to me the only season of Pokemon you actually like is Kanto, which was back when the franchise was underdeveloped.

Who are you even talking about besides Brock? Besides that, outside of a few inappropriate comments he makes in the Japanese version, Brock isn't even that creepy. You talk about him like he's Araragi or Rudeus.

Depends how it presents itself, is it the gimmick, is it the themes/jokes, is it the setting, the pacing of scenes, is it the dialogue, the subject of the dialogue, how it's presented.

I enjoy CGDCT but it varies, some can be pretty eh, not all have Lucky Star's balance of Konata and the others doing mundane things in good enough ways to be enjoyable for casuals or like Konata otaku/weebs/whatever these days. Some like Wakaba Girl was probably ok.

Are the conversations interesting, the character's jobs interesting, their outgoing lives, how they speak and

Gamers to me was eh, I found others that balanced gaming and romance.

Jaku chara I found eh how it handled the subject matter and the main female MC just annoying.

Some Hentai, some actions or story can be a bit eh if move preferences or eh dialogue.

For me I find it's the characters that matter most. A boring protagonist can kill even a really interesting setting. Take for example the RailDex seres, Railgun is a lot of fun and that's largely because Mikasa is a dynamic and engaging character, compared to Touma who is a flat and one dimensional one; it's no real surprise I ended up dropping Index and continuing with Railgun

I did it the other way around, but I agree that Misaka is the better character. It's just that she didn't do anything interesting in Railgun S1. She was more enjoyable to watch when bickering with Touma.
