Macaron usually uses 'atashi' which is the feminine version of watashi that is used by girly girl characters and was historically used by women in Japan, but it's apparently not that common anymore.

The author said they're non-binary in the Q&A for Volume 9.

I doubt you care about these verifiable facts and I find it hilarious that you think that Japanese people care about English grammar.

Translators and fansubbers tend to do to opposite when it comes to pronouns,
they add gendered pronouns to phrases so it makes sense for English viewers.

Even old fansubs changed localized sentences so they made sense in English even if the meaning was lost even jokes.
The old fansubs used to add swear words that weren't even spoken by the seiyuu.

@Neneaux do you know anyone who's building the AI to do proper, non-political subtitles? Lol I'm learning French so I can get away from the English subs. Happy it's only the English subtitles they're screwing around with.

It so annoying referring to Macaron with they instead of he. It's exhausting to mentally proofread the episode as you watch. What are these translators doing. Can't they afford a reviewer?

Edit: just for people who can't read between the line and think I'm asking for real. This is a rhetoric question. I'm making fun of the stupid mutts who can't follow English grammar. I don't care if the character looks like a girl or wants to be a girl. It's a boy. You don't hire a seiyuu with one of the manliest voices in the industry for a character that is not a man. If anything and the translator want to play into the joke, they should have used "she." And I will still correct it to "he."

There are "woke" people in every medium nowadays desperately still shoving the gender b.s. down our throats. Effing annoying. It was the one thing in this otherwise superb episode that was as stupid as hell.

Thankfully, the vast majority of people are against this b.s, which is why it is now slowly dying a still-too-annoying death.

@Raphaela28 And do you know what's more annoying? It would have been actually funnier to use the correct pronoun as it later turned out. Like this whole trope in Japanese anime is about a man with a heart of a woman, so the contrast is what makes the joke.

Someone above also mentioned they're not jacking around with this stuff in French, only in English. I'll have to check the German subtitles when I get chance (I'm not German, but currently live in Austria and speak enough German to figure out the pronouns :).

Would doubt they've gone with "their" though in German, as most Austrians and Germans I know are as sick of the woke garbage coming out of the U.S. and the UK as I am. (I'm British-American, btw, so am allowed to slam both countries' wokesters at the same time :)

The guy look like male, just use male pronoun. Not hard. He is not an real person (or American) who get hurt by using "wrong" pronoun. If these subs were made 15 year ago I'm sure they will use male pronoun

@Niveen_Sleem Singular they is grammatically correct, even Shakespeare used it. Margarette Macaron is canonically non-binary, see volume 9 of the manga, straight from the author's pen
