Is there any way MAL can implement a method for users to effectively assist in keeping the manga database up-to-date and overall better?

Because as much as users attempt to report manga's to be updated/corrected or added, there's seemingly little to (in my experience nowadays) no response.
Several manga are finished but marked as published, with several others not having their chapters/volumes updated, or have their dates.

I realize that adding manga is more complicated with the guidelines, but I remember getting responses in the past.
I don't think there's a problem in not responding because I can understand, but several reports of the same manga's to be corrected of their date, status or chapter count never being updated years later still, is... no offense, ridiculous.
At least in my case, they're clear factual correct wanted corrections from reliable sources, so it's not an issue of providing false information.
... The lack of new one-shot/manga being added in the database is somewhat fair, since there are hundreds every month, but the rest is odd to disregard.

It'd be cool if you could implement a way for users to assist the manga database because it's underwhelmingly not up-to-date which is frustrating and disappointing compared to the anime database which is immensely assisted and up-to-date compared to the manga database.

With the arguable meaningless addition of Webtoons/etc. in My"Anime"List, the workload of Manga Mods has become worse with an already lackluster effort of an acceptable Manga Database.
Now more than ever should be a time to get more Manga Mods somehow or figure a way in which users can effectively aid the database.

Consider applying to be a manga DB mod, they are adding more people.

I keep checking the staff list and it seems that no matter how long the recruitment lasts, there're barely any changes to the team lol.

Interestingly enough, since around last fall there was an improvement in at least 1 area - anime staff positions. They're approved pretty quickly, I've done hundreds already, I think. So maybe there's hope for manga too...someday

They can try, but in my experience it's just frustrating and you have to wait 2+ years for submissions to get approved, if they ever get approved. And DB modifications are not really being handled either. I've honestly been thinking about exporting my manga list to another site since I keep encountering manga that isn't on MAL despite having a physical release in english and/or other languages, which really shouldn't happen. That should be the minimum standard, that anything that gets licensed and published internationallly ends up in the DB. But even that seems too much to ask.
I probably regret this post by now.

Personally as far as I can see on applications we get, most just are a non starter, people apply without ever doing any form of contributions before and their application is littered with spelling mistakes and don't even answer all the questions they are supposed to. If we relax standards we would probably get people who cause more damage than useful work so the staff team is pretty limited, and of course these positions are entirely uncompensated so anyone with actual competency probably works a full time office job and may not have the energy to volunteer that many hours.

Maybe, but this just raises the question of whether filling up the DB should be done by manually by increasing the number of unpaid volunteers or some other way. For example some websites like shikimori.one piggyback on other sites' databases (namely MAL) and autoupdate their DB with new entries - since there're DBs better than MAL on manga front (mangaupdates, anilist), MAL can do that way too. Placing less requirements on submissions and approving a lot more a lot faster may also be a solution. Most people think the highest priority is for the entry to be in the DB at all, being a perfectly filled-in entry is not *that* important, at least for the users already familiar with the work from other sources. Maybe introduce something like a "how-informative-is-the-entry" progress bar or something, encourage its improvement by the user(s) *after* it gets approved instead of being like "well it's not perfectly filled in so lets put it in the backlog for another 4 years". Users usually know what they're submitting and aside of things that are just not anime (sorry Castlevania fans) it's fine to trust users with the information they find from secondary sources about the manga they want to add. Introducing something like a maximum amount of days for an entry to be unreviewed by mods can also help, sort the submissions by date and start with the oldest, etc.

Yeah, it'd be nice if we could have a suggestion vote system to help the mods, like some websites where if enough of the same thing is suggested, it'll be automatically added, or at least hint at mods that it's most likely accurate.

Aside from that, I find their priority order odd.
In the sense that several untranslated unknown manga are added first before translated known manga.
I wish they'd completely remove manwha, webtoons, etc. to decrease the ridiculous workload that they can't handle as is with manga alone, but unfortunately that's asking too much. Oh well.

I did consider applying in the past, but. Without japanese knowledge and the strict complex detail of what counts and how to relay it accordingly, plus the fact that it's unpaid, I don't feel confident as a fit, nor am I willing like I thought I was.

I'm still hoping this happens.
Like MangaDex. Submit manga or corrections from a manga, and fairly quickly get it approved or refused.

Unfortunately, not enough Manga Admins.
Again, removing Manwha, Webtoon, etc. would help a lot, because manga has far too many "comics" and not enough admins compared to anime.
Even anime, they don't do articles of news like AnimeNewsNetwork.

@waalex11 it's a waste of time to ask for that here. Just go use Anilist or kaize.io they are way ahead with their database and stuff gets approved fast.

Good point. I wish I tried AniList years ago, but I never did for prefering MAL.
Now, I don't wanna bother adding 2000+ manga to a new website/account...

Besides, I have a google sheet with most of whatever MAL doesn't have, with dates included of when I read them.

@waalex11 you can just export your lists here and then import them back to Anilist.

I'm curious if any mods can answer how long these take?
Particularly the simple fix of dates or chapter count.

I understand that chapters can be difficult to determine based on the official count with extras included,
but dates seem pretty straight forward of when it started and finished by looking at AniList... so why aren't mods quickly accepting the fixes of date?
Countless "old" manga are stuck as publish and not finished when they have been for years or months.

Again, I have to ask. Aside from applying.
Is there any way we can support the mods with efficiency of no errors and correct info to make them accept updates faster?

I can't help but repeat that removing anything other than manga and related novels, thus removing webtoon, manwha, etc. would help a lot with the overload of 7000+ "manga" stuck in pending.
