Normal? Perhaps. Healthy? It depends, I guess. In my experience I get tiny crushes on characters when I feel lonely and/or unwell.
The closest I've ever been to actually fall in love with a fictional character was last summer. I wasn't feeling well (emotionally and mentally) and was watching Amagi Brilliant Part and almost developed genuine feelings for Isuzu for some reason. I felt weird and sort of abandoned when I finished the anime.
That's my story. Do what you want with that information.

Ah, who cares. I'll insert myself between the two characters any day. And frankly, I think it wasn't a crush but actual love as I was a child and there were no pesky hormones to deal with. I've never experienced it much after puberty as there were obviously other factors at play. But I'm pretty sure the 8-or-so-year-old me was in love with Ishizu. Real love.

True, although I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the type of music and less to do with the era. I've never been a fan of pop music.
so it was like adult romantic love without the sexual attraction? perhaps you had reached first crystallisation but not second crystallisation, where one learns to love both the strengths and flaws of your very human (flawed) partner?

Yes, indeed. Perhaps that was the case.

Ahem...

The "ahem" wasn't about that. I just had an epiphany when you said "crystallisation." Then I checked the joined date, and it all started making sense all of a sudden. I was just confused by the lack of capital letters since only Milzol does that (I know whose idea was that, I think). But then I checked the profile and I realized that it's not even a secret, so I deleted that part from my post. Anyways, good job.

Falling in love with a fictional character seems pretty normal. People fall in love with anime characters, celebrities, pop stars, actors etc. It's all fake. None of it is real. I would never fall in love with any of them. I can see that it's all scripted lol. That said, fiction often has a disclaimer that any similarities to real life are a coincidence. There are characters and stories that I can relate to and I can use them to represent me or my ideals. Hence my waifus. Hence Rosaria. Hence Semilla. Hence Akko.

Wait, isn't this normal? I've always based my relationships on fictional characters in fantasy. Every friend I've ever had was a video game character.

I've been in love with a fictional character for 2 years now, and i use lucid dreaming to meet him and spend time with him, some people say it's normal and some people say it's not, but it's normal for me.

Is anyone familiar with Anima and Animus? Animus: The unconscious masculine side of a woman. Anima: The unconscious feminine side of a man.

For example: Why some young guy is so obsessed with fictional manga/anime character like Rem (Re: Zero) or Rias Gremory (High School DxD)? The answer is simple. A man's unconscious feminine side, anima, it projects that image, the ideal female that the man desires. Everything from look and figure to behavior.

Manga/Anime characters give our unconscious a boost. This simple media gives our unconscious a great force in thoughts, that we wish those fictional characters were real.

Not to mention that those fictional characters are from creators, humans like us. The creators used their anima and animus. So naturally we share them the view.

For most of last year, I definitely would describe having feelings of falling in love with a fictional character.

I researched the phenomenon. I talked to my therapist about it. I mentioned it to a few of my closest friends and my sister I could confide in. It seemed really strange to me, but people definitely go through it, and the people I did talk to were curious and supportive.

In time, the very strong feelings kind of dissipated, as they can in any relationship from the initial connection. I actually haven't felt that type of connection with any character in anime. Not sure if I will again. It turned more into just an overall appreciation of the medium, versus being so singularly centered around one character.

doesn't seem so strange to me. I wonder, those in this thread who are appalled by the idea...how do they react when they find themselves liking a character a little more than "normal"...? do they immediately shut off the anime and give themselves a good mental scolding? Or do they only watch anime with shallow characters who are impossible to like?

You have this unconscious masculine/feminine side of yours long time ago, and it reflects pretty clearly even on your favorite characters in profile who you like of both men and women.

Manga, Anime, Video games, etc.

I am attached to certain fictional characters. When people don't care about them and/or dislike them, I feel really sad and angry.

I admire and love the same personality traits in fictional characters as I do in real people. Same goes for appearance.

If you wouldn't feel anything towards the people and events on screen, why would you consume fiction anyway. I mean not only romantic love, but caring about them.

Of course it's not the same as actual love towards real people, but as long as it doesn't stop you from real life social contacts, does it matter.

I mean this is pretty normal. Anime characters are literally designed to be hyper-attractive and hyper-marketable with minimal real-life flaws. Whilst I think anime characters are hot/cute I wouldn't say I'm at the point of 'loving' them, although sometimes I wished they could be real.
As long as it doesn't bleed into real life. Use that obsession with a particular character as motivation to work on yourself =)
