Since you mention Akko, I also liked Yucie from Petite Princess Yucie that share some similarities, since some Trigger staff were involved in the series, plus it had some darker tone due to Hideaki Ano's involvement. Though I found some side characters better (notably Glenda and Elmina, who are the polar opposites to each other).

I think a similar character that changed me to some extent in that regard was Sora, Rosetta and Layla from Kaleido Star. Even after rewatching the series after 14 years I still felt that same feeling. Truly inspirational characters and series overall, they can make you forget any worries and become cheerful.

As for more complex series it comes from Yoshitoshi Abe series. I found Reki from Haibane Renmei one of the most humane animated characters and it really changed my view on how to think about other persons and their internal issues that are not so apparent from the start.
Same for Mayuko and Niea from Niea_7 which made me think how to treasure even the most trivial and silly moments.

Saber introduced to me to the Fate series, which has become not one, but my favorite series ever. There hasn't been a day in my routine these past two years where I haven't been doing something related to it. It may very well be the one thing too that has the highest chances of bringing me back to making art having all of those incredible characters. If I ever do go back, it would absolutely be because of this.

Okay first of all, that was a really great response as a whole, and exactly what I was looking for. You've had multiple influences from multiple shows that have all affected you in a myriad of ways. That speaks to the impact of this medium right there.

I'd like to point out this quoted topic above specifically, because anime has absolutely rekindled my love for drawing, past a level where it's ever been before actually. From graphite to pen and ink medium, to digital art, I've reignited my passion for this over just the past few months thanks to anime. I hope that you do decide to jump in and let yourself develop new skills. I even took some character creation courses on Udemy to help get my skills up (still in them) and I found them really useful.

I've taken a bit of time off of drawing to focus on getting through this hectic time right now, but I have every intention of picking it back up full speed soon. Definitely jump in, you'll be hooked!

Sanji from One Piece. I am also a cook. He changed my entire philosophy on cooking.

Haha this is so interesting! I wouldn't have thought someone found inspiration in cooking through anime!

Violet Evergarden destroyed and rebuilt my entire existence - not in a bad way of course.

I gained a very high motivation in exchange of a new form of depression that'd probably stick to my life forever.

Ohhhh myyyyy goodness. I couldn't agree more with this statement. That show broke me and put me back together again. It's one of the first anime series' that I recommend for people looking to get into anime for the first time. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Livio the Double Fang. And Vash the Stampede for giving him a chance.

You're never too far gone, especially if it's due to something out of your control. As long as you're willing to put in the effort to atone, your past doesn't define you.

Your takeaway from these is absolutely one of the most important things anyone can walk away from an anime believing. Good choice!

Wow, dude. You absolutely had every intention in staying engaged with your discussion and giving feedback to everyone here, huh? For lack of better words, that's really considerate and cool of you. :)

On that note. thanks for your encouragement! Who woulda thunk anime would had a similar effect on the both of us regarding art, haha. I do hope as well I get over this mental barricade of mine and jump back into art too. There hasn't been a moment here and there in these past 7 years where I haven't thought about picking up a pencil again to start drawing, but it's genuinely pretty tough, you know? It's the reluctance that gets you, and the fear of dreading results that live to your high expectations. Still, I have no room to argue if I don't at least try again.

Regardless of that, wishing you the best for your own endeavors too during this hectic time indeed! It's times like these we have to look at the silver linings, after all. Who knows? Maybe this free time of mine over on my end may be the determining factor to take action with this near decade long art predicament of mine. Only time and resolve will tell.

Thanks for the kind words! Of course. Discussions like this are important to me, and I appreciate the insight from other people who felt compelled to share.

Also, I'd love to know when you get into the drawing game! If you want, check out some Udemy courses by Jaysen Batchelor. In the first week you end up drawing an eye, and seeing how good my eye was after a week (many people produced very lifelike eyes in our group, too) just lit up a fire to keep going. Those courses are always on sale during holidays for like $10, too!

Many thanks! I'll make sure to take it into consideration when the time comes! At times like these, I'd respond with something along the likes of, "No promises", but more and more I feel like this will likely be the next big step for me in the future. Well, that, and being proficient in Japanese someday lol.

My latest favorite, Wei Wuxian from Mo Dao Zu Shi
The donghua didn't portray the depth of his character nearly as much as I would like, but I had read the source material and his character made a huge impact on me.

Ahh, I'm going through this as we speak and am about midway through the series. I'm absolutely loving it so far though! Wei Wuxian is so likeable IMO and I'm looking forward to seeing how things got so out of touch in present day. I'm assuming I'll have a better idea of why you respect him as much as you do toward the end.

I'm sorry that I link to my own blog post, but I don't want to write everything again nor spamming the topic with hundreds words. xD
https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=832840 Here is my more in depth- explanation for my favorite characters and also of course Wei Wuxian, if we speak of him.

Tho I love the anime, I definitely would recommend reading the novel too and if you don't care for some bad (sometimes really bad lol, like they didn't have a lot of money for it) CGI, the live action series as well, and if you could get into the asian way of acting, it's a bit different than western. But overall I think his actor does a really great job, especially in the heartbreaking scenes, but also in others.
It's much slower tho, but I loved that, because there are incredibly lot of additional scenes and you get to know every character and their relationships to others much better.

If we talk in general about anime, it was Noragami for me, because I was in a pretty depressed state and that was the kind of anime that is perfectly made for me and I absolutely adore the manga too. It became my favorite quickly back then, because I love the characters there and how different themes like character development, bounds, families etc are portrayed.
I wouldn't say they literally changed something, but some anime and characters were helping me a lot.

And then there way this scene from Cowboy Bebop that pulled all my heart strings.
As a kid I didn't think too much of it, but then with 20+... well shit, ouch. ๐Ÿ˜…

Also that scene from 12 Kingdoms was really powerful! (kinda spoiler)

It's great to see you two found your love for drawing again because of anime or some specific anime. ^^

I'm not the type of person who gets influenced by a fictional character very easily, but Reigen from Mob Psycho II had the most impactful character arc I have seen.

Not gonna lie, the insane fastings some characters did in Ashita no Joe to move to the lower weight classes really motivated me into losing weight. I'm currently not overweight anymore literally thanks to Ashita no Joe (specially season 2).

I'm currently at season1, joe is the most stubborn character I have seen so far.

Hikigaya Hachiman

I was always an "Absurdist" in that I believe there's not really meaning in life and that everyone continues to try to convince themselves otherwise; People constantly try to rationalize things and make excuses as it fits their lives, trying to pretend like their life or they themselves are something important.

As a result, I never really put effort towards anything and, particularly, anyone. However, after seeing it from the outside, in Hachiman's role, not caring, deceiving others, just to pass life by really isn't a way to live. Even if life doesn't have any meaning, you may as well enjoy the short time that you're alive. There's value in having things you like to do and friends in which you mutually enjoy each other's company.

Point is, regardless of whether or not it's the truth, going through life like nothing matters, particularly friendships/relationships, is an awful way to live, and it took OreGairu for me to realize that.

There's a philosopher who argued that the need to believe in something is as natural as the need to eat, for example. We just do it, be it God or Buddha or Zeus or Jupiter or Amaterasu or The Law of Attraction or Karma or Cause and Effect or you get what you give or whatever your mind can conceive. What you're referring to is called a Nihilist, I believe.

I'd say Misato from eva. Couldn't get over my first crush, still single. I'm a drunktard slob too lazy to do housework, only able to connect people through physical contact. And I want to drive an alpine. She's the ideal me.

hopefully this doesn’t come off as being too cringy

For me I’d say it’s Oreki from Hyouka. I was somewhat like Oreki, couldn’t really give much of a fuck about other people.
But after seeing him change to be more caring in the series, I started to care about my surroundings again. Though it was very slow, now I have been more grateful for the friends and family I have around me.

I’d say Shinji from evangelion has the same effect as well.

I don't know if it counts, but boys from Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru inspired me to run regularly. I can't live without it now. Running is the best thing in the world!
I was also inspired to get into running again, thanks to Oreki and Shinji. It’s sort of an indirect effect though, they just made me appreciate the things I abandoned for, what felt like, a long period of time.
ryuji from p5 may have had an impact on this as well

Many anime influenced me across the years making me a the person I am today. Lelouch is one of the most signifact characters in this process. Violet Evergarden and Gundam SEED built my new view on war after I had some outrageous ideas coursing through my head when I was younger.

ใ€Ž The truth has power because it’s the truth.
And because it is the truth, that makes it just.
It’s persuasive, isn’t it? Don’t you want truth like that? ใ€
