My advice, ignore this thread, it's not meant for discussion and arguing, it's just me trying to satisfy my own need to get some unimportant stuff out of myself, even if it is on Internet.
You won't get anything from it, and it will be unnecessary long post for the sake of being long.
Just be patient for either mod to delete it, or it just ends up burried by tommorow.
Anyway, lately, I've been putting most of my anime, and gaming activities aside, and focusing myself on some other things - for instance, I watch a lot of movies currently, old movies, to be more precise.
I don't know why is it so, maybe it's some mental illness, or fear of missing out, but no matter how hard I try, I just can't ignore old things, and just simply jump into the new ones, especially when it comes to long running franchises.
I'll give an example that is known to many people on MAL: Devilman Crybaby - while Devilman had for decades now various anime adaptations, or rather there many adaptations of Go Nagai's works, Devilman franchise had to wait until time when Ryoichi Tanaka (Akira Fudo/Devilman's first voice actor) himself got old enough to voice grandfather characters.
What does that have to do with me?
Well, while other people will just watch Devilman Crybaby immediately, I myself, no matter how good that title is, couldn't simply do the same, rather, I would decide to check the airing dates of all Go Nagai anime, and dedicate myself to only those, watching them in order of airing / release, until I reach the latest airing title.
It's hard to describe that feeling, but I simply find something incredibly satisfying in choosing an author, or director, or simply some franchise, or series that lasted for decades, and as I watch their anime, in the order they were released to people, I follow how animation evolved, but also, when we are talking about different adaptations of the same source material, I like to see how different directors, and different voice actors changed the old known characters.
It is satisfying, but also meaningful to me...
I haven't seen a lot of different things made post 2010, mostly those were comedies, and thinking about it now I loved pretty much all of them - Danshi Kokosei no Nichijo, Binbogami ga!, Gabriel DropOut, etc...
WataMote was also very interesting...
Those all were quite entertaining, and I liked a lot of characters, but to be honest, they were also way too short for me to fall in love with them the same way I fell in love with characters from some of long running series.
For example, Naruto series is not as long as, dunno, Gundam, or Dragon Ball, but it is known for how much fillers it has (maybe not as much as Meitantei Conan, but still), and while I personally loved most of fillers, because for me it was, well, more Naruto anime, it was still obvious that most of those weren't as entertaining as parts that adapted source material; however, those fillers also helped flesh out, and give attention to a lot of ignored characters in manga, which was, IMO, plus, and with that, they also helped me get closer to them, than I would in most seasonal anime, no matter how good.
2010s revived some old known series, and while that may be nothing more than using people's nostalgia to get money, I still greatly enjoyed pretty much everything of those that I saw, like revival of Dragon Ball, for instance.
It is simply beautiful to me to see old known characters doing their stuff once again.
Or in one similar, but also different example - when I got into Saint Seiya around 2015, which wasn't THAT long ago...
I knew about Saint Seiya for years before, but only knew it for its title, and maybe 2 - 3 characters' names.
Unfortunately, not all anime which adapts works of Masami Kurumada are translated into language understandable to me, so I decided to just watch everything related to Saint Seiya only, and watched them in some kind of in order of release marathon, starting with the original anime, and watching all the way until I reached Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold which aired at the time.
From then on, I just look forward in hope of new Saint Seiya anime, even if it is spin-off, that is how much I like basic concept of that series.
It is also nice that Toei kept some old seiyu to this day, because of how iconic they are.
And while I am at the iconic part, I think every fan of classic shonen should at least give chance series until the end of Sanctuary arc, because it is extremely, well, iconic, and then decide if they will continue, or not.
I myself enjoyed later released anime too, so maybe others will as well.
Outside of Japan, Saint Seiya is most popular in Latin America, but it seems that it slowly becomes familiar to other people as well...
Phoenix Ikki, for instance, had less than 300 favorites on MAL when I watched the series, and now he has 940, which may be also not be as much as some other popular characters on this site have, and it's not like number of favs really matter, but it still is somehow nice to know that there are other people who like the same character as I do.
Anyway 2, at first my plan was simply to, well, watch old school anime, until I would see those that interest me, not to mention I much more like seiyu who were in industry for a long time, or at least since 2000s, than those that made themselves known in 2010s, but I also realized that even old school anime found a lot of inspiration from movies, and a lot of those I haven't seen myself.
So, I don't know how long this will last, and it's not like I intend to see every movie there is, but at least some of the very influential ones - I saw most known Bruce Lee movies, and Mad Max trilogy with Mel Gibson (Hokuto no Ken was inspired by those), and also Lethal Weapon quadrilogy - since, well, why not see another franchise Mel Gibson is known for.
After that, I decided to go even further into the past, and get into the monster movies, starting with famous King Kong movie from 1933.
It becomes a bit convoluted from here on, but basically, King Kong was good enough of a movie for me, that I decided to spend some time with old monster / horror movies.
After seeing its sequel Son of Kong, next was supposed to be King Kong vs Godzilla from 1962 made by Toho Studios, popular for kaiju movies, but I wouldn't have been Psajdak, if I didn't decide, once again, to say fuck it, I'm not gonna watch this before seeing previous Toho Godzilla movies, including some other available monster movies made by them.
Btw, anime as we know it may not have been become until later, but these old kaiju movies have so many "anime elements", and tropes, that it makes me almost believe that even without Tezuka, if animation developed in Japan nonetheless, result would have been probably similar, if not the same.
Post King Kong vs Godzilla, I continued to watch more of Toho movies in more or less order of release, until it was Frankenstein vs Baragon's (1965) turn.
Of course, what else could I do, but put that movie aside, and first check out previous Frankenstein movies - so far I saw every that is available made up to the point I am currently at - from 1910 Frankenstein, till The Ghost of Frankestein from 1942.
The next movie that follows is Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1942), so, I instead of seeing first werewolf movies of Universal Classic Monsters, I was like, let's just see all of those that I can, starting with The Hunchback of Notre Dame from 1923; I decided to skip Spanish version of Dracula, and of course Frankenstein movies that I already saw, and right now, I am watching Werewolf of London from 1935 - I will continue later, because in general, no matter how good movie is, I rarely watch it in one sitting, anyway.
It is interesting to see those movies, especially because some of them I only saw shortly mentioned in movies released much later, or in commercials, etc...
But the most fucked up thing in all that convoluted thing of mine is, that, despite me deciding to watch those movies because I am basically insane, I pretty much enjoyed all of them.
It will be a while until I watch anime again, but this time, I will even more understand those references.
...
Now, if you will excuse me, I am gonna go make a tasty cake out of of some poor anime character, probably Yuno Gasai.
Enjoy in thread. |
