I'm fine with most CG shows, but the designs of the characters just look ugly to me, and the fights in the PV felt like I was watching a montage of a PS2 fighting game. I'd like to be fair, but I just don't have a lot of interest in this series from the PV and Teaser

In the trailer there was very little frames that the CG looked a bit fluid. Thats the only good thing I can see coming out of the fights being CG. It really hurts that one my favorite fighting mangas is getting the CG treatment but I hope it can somewhat be saved still. In Baki in the later half CG became less used and the animators sticked with the 2D I hope they can do that with Kengan Asura

No problem. It's not much but action sequences look a bit more fluid, better than nothing I guess

I hate CG but can understand why they want to use it for this particular anime. Possibly a time saving thing since all of the fighter's bodies are so detailed.

It doesn't help that the tournament is practically fight after fight after fight with barely any reprieve.

I mean sure there are fights obviously less important than others but most of the fights in general are given a ton of focus each.

Most netflix anime have very high budget actually. Much more than regular anime. Kengan Ashura just drew the short straw sadly.

Because taste is subjective. Let's not derail yet another thread in order to bash netflix. There are enough of those threads around.

its only licensed for airing on netflix. they didnt make the show themselves. its a sub company of studio hibari. story is more important then animation. i seen some terribly animated shows be straight up sick hot fire. i'll watch it with an open mind. most of the people that complain will play ps2 games and tell you graphics dont matter.

I really don't care about the funding, the majority of netflix anime I've watched feature extraordinarily bad CG that is insanely jerky and just straight up abhorrent to witness.

There is a certain base-level of consumability that is expected. It doesn't have to be god-tier revolutionary, but when it literally jerks around, with motions snapping from one place to another without transition frames between said motions, it borders on unwatchability for a number of people.

Why act as if a 10/10 story with 1/10 animation is equally good as a 10/10 story with at least 6+/10 animation?

Here is an example of atrocious animation, although it comes from a game.

https://youtu.be/TVuRfflSGk4?t=332

Mouths snap from full close to full extension without any frames dedicated to transitioning between those two states, things like hair in the wind looks so bad you want to gouge your eyes out. Most PS1 games have smoother animation, even if they don't have the same resolution ETC.

Edit: I'm not calling this particular series "1/10 animation quality" just using an example for the sake of the argument.

That's the case for every "netflix original" anime. They are simply funding the anime.

I cannot support that statement whatsoever. I've watched quite a few anime funded by netflix but if we're talking only about the animation quality, with the exception of Kengan Ashura, I haven't come across a single anime that wasn't leaps and bounds superior to your average seasonal anime.

Anyway, I've finished watching the first 7 episodes of this and to my surprise I was actually able to warm up to the CG. Due to the nature of this series there needs to be a lot of motion in order to make the fights look good, which would be very difficult to do with traditional animation so I can see why they opted for this kind of CG.

Plenty of traditionally animated anime have had insane high speed fight scenes that were gorgeous beyond a level I can give justice to with my words. Not to mention motion looks significantly worse in the strange, hyper-jerky CG these studios seem to employ.

If I had to guess, they're using the same frame technique traditional anime uses, which is to basically make 8 frames and triplicate those frames to receive a frame rate of 24. This works reasonably well with traditional anime style but with these CG models it creates these ugly, jerky motions where things seem to just move from one state to another instantly with no actual movement occuring. But I am not an animator and this is mere speculation as to why it's so awful in most weekly anime.

As far as jerky CG animation goes from netflix I would say the two biggest offenders that come to mind are Ajin and Ingress. Baki's transitions from more traditional animation to CG were kinda jarring because the CG, while not as bad as the previous two entries, is significantly less smooth than the traditional animation. And I believe Back Street Girls was a netflix title? The art quality itself more than the animation quality was kinda inconsistent.

Edit: I would say Kengan Ashura looks MUCH better than both Ajin and Ingress though. Also Devilman Crybaby was stunning.

Wrong, it's their anime since it premiered whole there, it's an OVA. It doesn't have TV airing.

lose the bad first impressions, the anime is quite amazing, really.
the animation, rhythm and sound effects are very cool and fast during the fights.

the only people whining so much about this adaptation are fans of the manga.

Just finished watching part one! The first couple of episodes were boring, and the animation was not helping much. But after episode 4, holy shit. Episode after episode was extremely entertaining.
Yes it's extremely unfortunate that cgi was added to the show. But the 2d animation that was shown was top notch. Kinda reminded me of drifters, it's a shame that the whole show was not 2d.

This show falls in the came problem with berserk. Great story, but horrible animation.
