THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Well, this was a weird one. The guy became a living chair.
I feel kinda bad for him, too... he didn't seem like he did anything wrong, and yet still got punished for it by Moguro (Although, I suppose that has happened before in this series).

Anyway, I really liked some of the oil painted backgrounds in this episode. Top-notch stuff. I really wish modern anime today still employed traditional art techniques like this at times. Even if modern anime has gotten away from animating on CELs, these kind of backgrounds are still really rather striking, much more so than any digital backgrounds can hope to be, and I think they could still work alongside digital character animation.

I think that in the morality of Japanese Shinto, evil/impurity isn't "wrong" in the same way that it is in Europe/America (i.e. something hateful you do by sinning), it's more like something that tends to bring disaster. By having empty spirits, the people in the show are "impure" and that's why disaster strikes them. Sometimes having an empty spirit means just not being satisfied with your lot in life.

I'm sure I'm over-simplifying, but that's why this show is so fascinating. See my review of the newer season in my sigfile.
...but then again, I unironically like Warau Salesman.

I thought the guy would become lazy and drive his company to ruin after receiving the bed, but nope, he just gets turned into a chair. Some episodes seem to have their own morals, but then there's the weird ones like this...
