Oh man, what exactly went wrong? The first half was so nice, showing so much potential and the adventure aspect of it was amazing, then you have the second half, where Palme acts like a creep and was annoying as hell. The romantic(?) development with Popo was so shallow and forced. Popo herself was a nice character, up until certain point of the series.

Oh well, at least the ending was good.

That has got to be among the weirdest things I've ever seen. Possibly the weirdest because contrary to regular weird things the various elements of the movie didn't feel random at all. I haven't feel like this since Akira. But while Akira's weirdness can be measured in moments, here it's movie lengthed.

Where to start? the first noticeable thing is the bgm. Often atonal or arrhythmic, sometimes gloomy, it creates an eerie and uncomfortable feeling in the viewer that is on one hand dreamlike, and allows to channel the symbolism of the imagery; but on the other hand, this feeling is tiring, especially with emotionally loaded scenes, and while trying to follow the plot, and it's a long movie.

Don't get me wrong, the animation is stellar, the backgrounds are great, the plot premise is interesting, the world's lore is rich, but for some reason the movie is hard to enjoy. Maybe because of the sharp character design, maybe because of the focus on negativity and trauma, and maybe because of the music.

Which is paradoxical really since the movie wants to convey a ton of things and has interesting ways to do so, but is just not viewer friendly. And that is also why this movie is so great. It came out in 2002, but in its message, and its lack of compromise it feels like an 80s movie. Not many movies can be called thought-provoking, or a work of art, and this movie is both, and that makes it worth seeing.

Admittedly not the most engaging of stories, particularly considering Palme's character and nature. But I found the movie to have a very strong audiovisual presence, enough to keep me glued throughout. That OST definitely deserves a listen in its own.

It's one of those movies that you need to go into expecting to analyze from the get-go, or be willing to re-watch and consider the perspective of the characters themselves.

It's certainly interesting to watch at least, and much more enjoyable once you get a better understanding of why certain characters reacted the way they did.

One of the best movies on here. I'll slightly agree with the ending being kinda' slap-dash and hard to parse, almost Evangelion-like at the end there. The general themes are easy though: Palme serves as both an example of and a mirror to humanity and what is or isn't human and the various scenes aren't "inconsistencies" they're vignettes showing various aspects of this along a journey. Set in a world inspired by stuff like Fantastic Planet so the viewer doesn't slip into thinking this is some kind of lore-heavy literal tale about a fantasy land. Animation was amazing throughout, even the CG and digital editing/compositing was all used almost perfectly.

I really liked it. It was like watching Angel's Egg for the first time.

Beautiful film! The brilliance of how Koram's story was interwoven throughout and how it blossomed at the end caught me by surprise, but truly elevated the movie for me.

Also, I got a thousand negative points for not recognizing Mayumi Tanaka's (Luffy) voice the entire time I was watching the Japanese dub of "Castle in the Sky," but I should get at least a few hundred points back for recognizing Kappei Yamaguchi's (Usopp) voice right away. It took me longer to recognize Daisuke Sakaguchi's voice, but to be fair, I thought this movie was older and that he was a younger voice actor who I wouldn't have expected in a movie as old as it was (I was wrong on both accounts). Plus, I'm used to him getting casted for specific types of characters, so Shatta was out of the norm.
