Magical girls are known for their ability to fight baddies, look cute but fierce, and juggle an ordinary school life with saving the world. But if there's one thing we've come to expect from the magical girl genre, it's the transformation scene.

You know the one. Popularized by Sailor Moon and many other magical girl anime, this scene usually consists of the heroine rotating in a vacuum as her clothes disappear and her frilly fighting outfit appears, presumably while the bad guys wait patiently for her to finish.

As silly as this premise is on its own, some anime take it to the extreme. What happens when you inject a bit too much sex into a show featuring tweens? What if you replaced the girl with a boy, but kept all the frills? Prepare to laugh / wince / feel uncomfortably confused: Here are the most ridiculous magical girl transformation scenes we could find.

Panty and Stocking is known for its overtly sexual and crude style, and the transformation sequence of the titular characters doesn't disappoint. The sequence completely changes the art style, and has Panty and Stocking gyrating against poles, feeling themselves over, and seductively removing their underwear. It's on par with the series, but it's pretty out there for a magical girl transformation.

Ink Nijihara

Moetan Pastel Ink transformation
All the Moetan transformations are pretty questionable, and Pastel Ink is a prime example of this. The sequence features the 10 year old -- sorry, 17 year old girl getting completely naked. The usually chipper character also turns strangely flushed and serious, while a duck looks on, drooling uncontrollably. It's… wrong. We feel dirty watching this video.

Natsuki Shirafuji

The other sequences in Saint October are weird, but the scene where Shirafuji turns into Loli White is downright disturbing. Shirafuji squeezes a strange organic-looking orb until it sends streams of a white liquid all over her clothes and face. When she licks off a bit of the mysterious white substance, the ground erupts into a geyser of white gunk which completely envelops her and turns her into Loli White. How can a sequence that lacks nudity look this perverted?

Sayaka Kurenai

Kurenai's sequence is triggered by her suggestively licking her finger and rubbing it on her stomach… and it only goes downhill from there. The faces she makes as a rose is formed around her are not the faces of someone getting a simple change of clothes. As she emerges she makes it clear what whatever happened to her inside that rose was… orgasmic, apparently.

Valkyrie

Growing a few sizes in the bust area isn't unusual in magical girl transformation sequences, but UFO Princess Valkyrie takes it a step too far. Not only do we watch a little girl magically grow into a fully-grown woman, the spark that triggers the change is a kiss. We could say this is symbolic of a young girl's emerging sexuality, but we all know who the intended audience is. The kiss and the spontaneous fast-forward through puberty makes this somewhat uncomfortable to watch.

Who said you have to choose between magical girls and tentacles? To LOVE-ru combines the two into one sequence. For Lala's transformation, tentacles grip her all over the body. She emerges with a smile and an extra bounce.

Mina Tsukada's transformation is triggered by eating a carrot. Magical girls need no explanation -- they are magical, after all. Unless a series is deconstructing the genre, there's no reason to explain it. These things just happen. But Getsumen to Heiki Mina isn't happy with the simple explanation of "it's magic." Mina's transformation comes complete with a science lecture that explains how the Beta-Carotene in the carrot is decomposed in the body into Vitamin A, which removes all the oxygen from the cells, allowing them to be reconstructed into a new form. If this science behind Mina's 3-cup size jump is real, carrots would suddenly be much more popular.

Yue Ayase

This version of Yue's transformation (seen at 8:55 in the video above) starts out with her clothes ripping off her. Then, as everyone stares on, a pair of underwear and a bra magically appear. The undies slip on easily enough but apparently even magical bras can be annoying to get on. The rest of the transformation is relatively normal, but it's… not quite what we were expecting, really.

The entire premise for this anime is ridiculous, so we'd have been disappointed if the transformation sequence didn't pull a few laughs. And it does -- Poemi wiggles around, waving her dead fish of power in the air; she is stripped of everything except her socks, which she removes deftly with her toes; her unladylike legs and jello butt turn dainty and feminine in an instant. It's a silly parody of the trope, which could only have been made better with a transformation sequence for Nabeshin. Please?

Ayumu Aikawa

Poor Ayumu, he didn't ask for this kind of life. When a tentacle squid monster attacks, he has no choice but to activate the magical uh… chainsaw, and become a magical girl. There's no hiding his identity from his schoolmates, though -- as he transforms into the prettiest, frilliest magical girl, everyone snaps plenty of pictures. Magical boys are not unheard of, but Is This a Zombie? is a fun spin on the genre.

Hideyoshi Kinoshita

From Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu

We would be remiss if we didn't mention the loveliest of all magical girls, Hideyoshi. Really, though, this transformation is so ridiculous because it's so unnecessary. None of the other characters undergo transformation sequences like Hideyoshi's, and he even wonders why he's the only one who got one. Adding to the fact that he is undeniably a he, and ends up basically in the same clothes that he started out in…it's clear this sequence is only there to amuse and confuse all viewers about their sexual orientation. Such is the power of Hideyoshi.
