He was born into a noble family but decided to run away and live in the Gray Terminal, eventually setting out to sea on his own. 12 years before the present storyline, he was a childhood friend of Ace, and eventually Luffy as well, to the point where the three considered themselves to be "brothers." Along with Ace and Luffy, Sabo's dream was to become a pirate so that he could set sail and achieve freedom, and made plans with his brothers to set sail at age 17.
Despite this, Sabo decided to set sail before Ace and Luffy, and his boat was destroyed by a Celestial Dragon moments later. Sabo was believed to have died from this event, but was saved by Monkey D Dragon. He got Post-traumatic Amnesia and forgot everything, even his name. He joined the revolutionaries for the meantime.
Soon after the events of Marineford when he read the news of Ace's death, he suddenly regained his memory and passed out crying. When he came to senses, he decided that he would search for a devil fruit Mera-Mera no mi.
Sabo is the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army, and the adopted brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace, as well as the son of Outlook III. He is recognized as the "No. 2" of the Revolutionary Army and the second in command under Dragon himself.
In chapter 744, Sabo eats the Mera-Mera no Mi and becomes its new user.
